Deliciously Clever Comedy![]()
Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver are absolutely terrific as mother-daughter con artists out to rob rich men of their money. After pulling off what was supposed to be their final heist before parting ways, Weaver persuades her daughter to go through with one more.
Gene Hackman is hilarious as William Tensy, their latest target, a chain-smoking millionaire who doesn’t appear to have much longer to live. Ray Liotta is fantastic as one of their past cons, who was truly in love with Weaver. The always energetic Jason Lee is the guy in love with Hewitt’s Paige, who is also beginning to fall for him.
It’s a wonderfully complicated love circle with some hilarious results. Hackman steals the show, and Weaver is quite funny and amusing, especially when sporting her Russian accent. Anne Bancroft delivers her usual good performance in an almost cameo role as Weaver’s mentor.
Heartbreakers is not as cruel as it could be, but always a delight to watch. Some have found the length a bit much, but it moves along at trip-hammer speed, engrossing all the way through. I feel it is a truly underrated comedy and one of the best 2001 had to offer.
Original, fresh, clever, funny and spectacular!!!!![]()
I believe that this was a great-great commedy. The actors where hillarius with very good roles. The story was nice and clever and personally I enjoyed each and every line-dialogue that existed in the movie!! The atmosphere in the movie was great and I believe that the director did a talented and wonderfull job developing the movie as he takes the maximum out of every actor in the movie.
The romance within the comedy kicks in just about the right time and despite the high speed with which the movie goes on(its just a movie after all) I really loved the whole concept.
To all people who like comedies-romantic comedies you will certainly like this one more or less.
As for me this is one of the best comedy films I have ever seen and it came as a great surprise as I rent it from the video club not knowing anything about the plot or the movie.
Having seen some negative remarks about this film I am not a great film reviewer or anything and I judge this film without comparing it to other older ones regarding the plot etc. I don’t care if this film copied an older or it stole the plot, or the story was silly, of men are silly etc!! Simply this was the best (non-black comedy) romantic film that I saw the last few years that I liked and enjoyed each and every minute of it! Imagine that the second time I saw it I couldn’t change the channel and whatch the 3rd Harry Potter film that I had just rented (there goes another extra 2 euros for keeping the film for another day). Instead I watched the film that was on tv (sorry Harry)
Heartbreakers![]()
Quick. Make some popcorn, settle into your favorite easy chair, and be prepared to enjoy 2 hours of mindless energetic fun. You won’t glean valuable insights into the meaning of the universe, as heartthrob Jason Lee innocently seeks in this lightweight offering, but you will have been pleasantly entertained. The unlikely cast of Weaver, Hewitt, Hackman, and Liotta work suprisingly well. Call it “The Sting” lite. This amusing farce revolves around the exploits of a mother and daughter team of gold digging grifters. Jennifer Love Hewitt as the daughter supplies plenty of eye candy, but her acting skills and comedic timing are first rate. I suspect we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future. You gotta love Gene Hackman as an obnoxious, unrepentant tobacco billionaire who’s face seems to be perpetually obscured in a cloud of cigarette smoke. Ray Liotta does not look much older than he did in “Goodfellas” and is hilarious as a shady businessman/love interest for Sigourney Weaver who in a rare comedic appearance, turns in a humorous performance. Several cameos by familiar personalities from television and film are unexpected fun. This is a movie that does not take itself too seriously and does not expect you too either. Enjoy.

Now like many I too gain that Jean Claude Van Damme isn’t the greatest actor in the world. He’s an action hero after all and powerful like Steven Seagal, he’s someone we wouldn’t usually request a 5 star acting performance from. He’s objective passe to kicking people in the head and looking all heavenly whilst doing so. Now he’s older and currently a man who’s career was absolutely dying a death, at least until this film was made and now he has the possibility to be support on effect and revive his career as a more serious actor.

So what makes this film different from all the rest? I hear you ask. Well for one he’s not playing some clichéd character who you waste up shouting “kick his head off” at. He’s actually playing himself in a fictional setting and as exclusive as it sounds it actually allows him to reveal noteworthy more acting talent than you would have first concept.
So what’s the film about? I hear you secondly ask. Well, JCVD’s life isn’t going too well and is constantly in battle to find movie roles but is constantly beaten by his rival Steven Seagal. His wife has divorced him and is in good battles for the suitable to have access to his daughter. He also has quite a few tax and money troubles to boot, so to speed his troubles he decides to go home to his native Belgium only this isn’t as serene as he’d hoped.

Upon his arrival in Belgium he goes into a Post Office, and after his fans remark a local policeman that the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme is home and in the local post office. Then out of nowhere a gunshot rings from the post office sending people into a apprehension and shy that it turns out to be the movie star himself holding up the post office, or is it?
Well what entails is a film about hostage negotiation and a traumatic movie star life that is topped off with a difficult site. It’s not the typical JCVD film as it contains very runt fighting karate style, but the film is made truly special with the defining monologue. Roughly half procedure through the film, JCVD is brought away from the record and the film in quite a irregular style that allows him to sigh a monologue that gives the impression it comes straight from the heart. He talks about his life and career and how he wants to be remembered as a more serious actor. I got the impression that a lot of the monologue although in a scripted movie, was actually improvised or at least written by JCVD himself.
I would highly recommend this film to any JCVD and non-JCVD fan as it’s truly his best work to date. This is seriously a possible breakthrough movie for him to bring his career encourage up to urge and rather than continuing to star in “straight to DVD” movies like this one, sadly, he may be given more movies that open in the cinema and give him a wider appeal as the man is calm a name that captures peoples interests.
Get it, you wont be disappointed.
I came upon a crowd outside a movie theater bearing the title: JCVD. The theater is jammed with dedicated fans having memories of Van Dammes past International natty star region from the 1988 Bloodsport.
What a movie! It likely surpassing the collective expectations from the initiate of the entire audience. The opening scene rocks. A 4-minute film within a film begins with vintage-like Van Damme moments of high energy action. This single-shot sequence unfolds vamping up Van Dammes pre-existing persona in dynamic fashion. Then this unbelievable assembly of action ends with a hilarious erroneous wall falling over when a door is simply slammed too hard by a winded and exhausted Van Damme blithely complaining to a movie director, who couldnt care less (as in dependable life), that he is 47 and it is simply too hard to do these furious action scenes at his age!
The film then pivots under the young but world class directorship of Mabrouk El Mechri to the main anecdote, where the audience is treated to a Van Damme they have never seen before acting with astonishing depth and character. This transformation from a shallow bigger-than-life action hero to portraying moral down-to-life emotions will be worth the admission alone.
Van Dammes dramatic performance and his featured monologue — are powerful. The director caught Van Damme on film in a plan to invent any audience celebrate with rousing enthusiasm alongside Van Damme as he convincingly relates his concept in the American dream, then address his marriage and drug problems of his past, and how he wants a second chance to build a incompatibility in the world. It is one of those cinema moments bordering on being a masterpiece; it re-invents Van Damme.
The camera floats through the chaos of Van Dammes life and caresses Van Dammes face that has taken on a splendid amount of character. Van Damme has stories in his eyes. Van Damme has life in his eyes. Van Damme has sadness in his eyes. Van Damme has regrets in his eyes. Van Damme has a message to thunder. The movie cleverly uncovers the pitfalls slack celebrity state with humor that Van Damme does very well.
The space borrows on Van Dammes trying past. Playing himself, a beaten and miserable Van Damme returns to his native Belgium in hopes of getting out of the limelight. Van Damme is financially drained and makes a bee line to his home bank. But the Belgium bank is in the midst of being robbed. Van Damme is caught up in the ensuing mayhem as the police on arrival wrongly capture Van Damme is piece of the robbery team. The loyal criminals are enjoying extravagant excellent luck. Not only do they have Belgiums biggest movie star in their control, but through his ill-luck he is also taking the tumble for them! In trying to pick up a scheme out, Van Damme realizes his Hollywood action roles of his past all plunge flat when a exact gun is pressed to his head.
This is a movie to be seen, not merely read about. Not only is Van Damme re-born but so too is the audience through a shared experience with Van Dammes moral failures and triumphs! (Dr. R. Witmer, Ph.D. co-author of Van Dammes Biography appearing [...])

Terrific performances.![]()
Maybe you’ve forgotten that Robert DeNiro was once considered America’s best actor. Maybe his constant involvement these days in lousy projects (Showtime, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Hide and Seek, et al) has diminished his reputation? Well, Stanley & Iris is a terrific place to go to see him at his guarded, emotionally tight best.
This is a middle-aged love story, about two people whose lives have been difficult, and who need each other more than they know.
While the direction and story are somewhat weak, the characters of Stanley and Iris and DeNiro and Fonda’s performances make the film.
Here you will find excellent acting, genuine vulnerability and and angle of repose and beauty.
A very satisfying movie![]()
I love this movie. In a world where movies consist mostly of horny school kids and people who only believe in multiple sex partners and drive by shootings, this movie is such a refreshing change. It concentrates on normal people just trying to make lives for themselves. This is a movie that probably most of middle America can relate to on some level. Jane Fonda is beautiful, and Robert DeNiro is so sweet and endearing. Yeah, it’s a chick flick…you got a problem with that?
A well-acted love story about real people![]()
I have to admit I have a thing for Jane Fonda and her blue eyes and endless different facial expressions. Her acting in this movie was no disappointment. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of Robert DeNiro like the rest of the world but his acting was also very good. I actually related to both characters. I can forgive some weaknesses in script and editing in a movie like this. I thoroughly enjoyed it as a break from the movies about rich, extroardinary people doing unbelievable things. What a nice concept that two shy, no-longer-twenty-something ordinary people can help each other conquer their fears and weaknesses in an honest relationship. While most movies portray the guy getting the girl with relative ease, Stanley has to struggle.

There are many delicate reviews of “Glory” to be found here. I feel the same method about this fantastic film, and after touching on the sage I would like to talk about this DVD release(witness above) which is an outstanding quality and proper value.
“Glory” is an exceptional film. A good memoir of the Civil War that is both touching and inspirational. It depicts the sage of the first murky unit from the North to be trained and actually go into battle. Led by their very empathetic but very young Colonel(played brillantly by Matthew Broderick), the 54th Regiment endures many hardships felt not only by being soldiers of this devastating war but as African Americans as well.Their spirit, pride and tears along the plan, is projected in this film by these extraordinary actors in a plan that will develop you feel all the inconvenience and pride that they felt.

The cast includes Morgan Freeman as the Sergeant who is the motivating force gradual the soldiers. His performance is stirring. Denzel Washington, awarded Best Supporting Actor by Oscar for his role as the runaway slave looking for a home will go you to tears(or at least assign a lump in your throat, which remains throughout), and Andre Braugher’s smile and tenacity will grab you and retain you.The cinematography and sound(both also honored by Oscar) are radiant.Beautifully directed by Edward Zwick it is a war anecdote that is more than action, it is one you won’t soon forget.
Often, the different DVD editions wind up on the same product page. You may have found yourself on the page of the “Special Edition” of Glory. That is the 2 disc edition with lots of special features. If these are well-known to you in a DVD than that is the one you should probably go with. However, if you really fancy this film, but don’t want to expend as mighty for all the extras, this edition is identified by ASIN:0800177967. It is half the stamp of the “Special Edition”,and is a delicate transfer as well. You have the choice of viewing it in the recent widescreen(1.85:1) or a fat conceal version. The record is magnificent, captivating, crisp and elegant. Colors spectacular. Depending on your station up the sound options are 5.1(Digital Dolby) or 2-channel surround.I watched it in the 5.1 and was very impressed. All the sounds of the Civil War were definite and definite. The music unbelievable. It may be viewed in Spanish or French and has subtitles in English, Spanish and French also.
Whatever edition you settle, this a a film that is a handsome addition to your DVD collection. It is one that will be watched again and again. Thank you and relish…..Laurie
Being a Civil War reenactor, as a group we tend to be very skeptical of the historical movies that hollywood provides.Glory is probably the only movie that almost every reenactor liked and sung the praises for. Glory stands out as a masterpiece of this abominable time in the nations history. The cast was outstanding. Broderick is entirely convincing in his role as the idealistic young Colonel Robert Gould Shaw who commanded ONE of the first all gloomy units of the Civil war. Morgan freeman captures the persona of the “wise, outmoded seargeant” that is a classic motif of the war movie genre. However to me the actor who steals the reveal is without a doubt Denzel Washington. Washington gave even us rebs someone to adore(even as he was taking down 2 and 3 rebs at a time) as he went from the exasperated, rebellious young private(and for pleasurable reason) to the radiant soldier.

The set of the movie is consistent, and came across as a suitable Anecdote to the audience, and not unbiased a lecture. The film captured the extremely racist attitudes of the time, and the exclaim hell that the characters went through to overcome it. Also the pick up was sizable, especially the final climatic scene for the attack on Battery Wagner. When Shaw is killed by Confederates, the acquire picks up with a perfect tune as the 54th makes their final assault. But most importantly the movie does not bore the average viewer like Gettysburg did with its hours of talk. The movie takes a very sterling myth, throws in some colossal characters, and follows it to a T. There is no wasted scene in Glory(which is more then we can say for other Civil war attempted movies) . This made it a joy for both Civil War buff and regular viewer alike.
Now for the titanic sticking point. Historical accuracy. To this the movie scores a rather well accept. Obvious the final battle was not 100 percent honest, and even the earliar skirmish in the woods(known in the war as the Battle for Sol Legare Island) . But this movie was not a documentary. Its goal was not to give a blow by blow history of the 54th… objective to narrate their general “epic”. With that intent, the movie greatly lived up to its accolades for its accuracy. The battle scenes were outstanding and gave war its “hellish” idea that was absent in Gettysburg to ample degree. Only Private Ryan beats this movie in its carry out at showing the viewer a taste of War.
Glory has also been arguable the most influential Civil War movie of all time. Tens of Thousands of people who had never picked up a Civil war book in their life, became zigzag on this time period from Glory. That will perhaps be one of its finer legacies. How many african Americans(and Americans in general) became aware for the first time of those Blacks who wore a uniform in the Civil War from this movie. Countless. How many people do not know that honored legacy now that Glory has advance out. Very few.

Move over Gettysburg, GWTW, and all the other “attempts” at a Civil war movie. Glory will probably never be topped in this genre. The best!!

Movie Title: White Heat White Heat is available for streaming or downloading. |
“White Heat” is current in that it is a genre film that is also widely considered to be film noir. It’s immistakably a gangster film, yet it deviates from the conventions of that genre in that its main character, Cody Jarrett, is complex and introverted enough to be a noir protagonist. “White Heat” was masterfully directed by Raoul Walsh and features James Cagney in one of this most memorable gangster roles. Treasury Department investigator Philip Evans (John Archer) is hot on the bound of the distinguished criminal Cody Jarrett (James Cagney) after the Jarrett gang has robbed a mail stutter, killing several people and making off with a sizable sum. In order to guarantee himself immunity from the multiple cancel charge, Cody confesses to an out-of-state robbery that took space at the same time, for which he receives a couple of years in prison. But the Feds are wise to his design and site an undercover agent (Edmond O’Brien) in the cell with Cody, hoping to learn the identity of the person who launders money for the Jarrett gang.
Buy,Download, Or Stream White Heat! Click Here
The psychology of Cody Jarrett is the most striking aspect of “White Heat”, and the element around which the legend revolves. We are told by the federal investigators that Cody is actually “insane”. He is bloodthirsty and so unstable that his pursuers alarm that he will go completely off his head before they can learn anything from him. Cody also has a pathologically dependent relationship with his doting and equally ruthless mother, who is played to perfection by Margaret Wycherly. Cody is such an grievous personality that James Cagney’s ability to originate him completely believable is distinguished. The “reliable guy” undercover cop, Hank Fallon, is bland and submissive, which only increases our focus on Cody. Another striking characteristic of “White Heat” is its technophilia: The film spends a mammoth deal of time demonstrating cutting edge surveillance technology that is broken-down to track Cody. Cody is defeated more by technology and bureaucracy than he is by his occupy lunacy.
The DVD: Bonus features include a documentary about the film, a theatrical trailer, an audio commentary by author and film professor Dr. Drew Casper, and a “Warner Night at the Movies” prelude to the film. If you have time, “Warner Night at the Movies” is a nice feature. With an introduction by Leonard Maltin, Warner Brothers provides a nice collection of mini-features that emulate the now-defunct tradition of showing a cartoon, a short, a newsreel, and a trailer with every theatrical film. “White Heat” was released in 1949, so we have, from 1949: a trailer for the film “The Fountainhead” (2 minutes), a newsreel of the year’s highlights (1 1/2 minutes), a short “Joe McDoakes” comedy, called “So You Consider You’re Not Guilty” (10 minutes), based on the worn vaudeville routine “Pay the Two Dollars”, and a Bugs Bunny cartoon called “Homeless Hare” (7 minutes) . You can also inspect the featurettes separately if you like. “White Heat: Top of the World” (16 minutes) features interviews with filmmakers, critics, and theorists, including Martin Scorsese and Alain Silver, in which they discuss the film’s themes, James Cagney’s role, and the characters of Cody, Ma, and Cody’s wife Verna, played by Virginia Mayo. The audio commentary by Drew Casper approaches “White Heat” as a gangster film, not as film noir, as this seems to be Dr. Casper’s set of expertise. Casper talks about how the film was promoted, James Cagney, Freudian influences, themes, and analyzes director Raoul Walsh’s style for some scenes. Subtitles are available for the film in English, Spanish, and French.
I have seen White Heat numerous times and it never flags or fails. It’s the swan song of Warner Brothers gangster films and is one of the wildest rides you can imagine. It’s a heist film, with a twist and it comes in the design of a gangster so crooked, so over the top, that no one has reach cessation to it.No one is dumb enough to try. James Cagney plays Cody Jarrett, a ruthless gangster, killer, strong arm robber and mama’s boy. His work is so compelling, so overwhelming and vicious that it unnerved viewers in 1949 and followed Cagney for the rest of his career. Cagney loathed the success of the role, fearing that it overshadowed all of his other mask performances, which it did, for its successful portrayal of a lunatic force of nature. Cagney was an actor who could and did anything. Gangsters, screwball comedies, dramas, musicals, westerns, war films, and Shakespeare. To be typed as an insane killer, who could shoot trapped henchmen in a car trunk while munching on a chicken leg, while throwing off one liners, was not what he wanted to be remembered for, but see White Heat and spy if this work can be easily forgotten. White Heat’s non-stop action, it’s no nonsense propulsion is provided by a solid script, immense character actors, and the perceptive stare of director Raoul Walsh. We get ourselves clearly rooting for a psychopathic killer, because most of the world he moves through is populated with nothing but thieves, backstabbers and robot like FBI agents who breeze and talk like Hal 2000′s. And check out the role of Fallon (Edmond O’Brien) . It’s a cunning performance and contributes to the overall weirdness of White Heat. No sense giving the ending away, but it did introduce audiences to the cataclysmic force of the atomic age in all it’s craziness. You have to go to Kiss Me Deadly to fetch an ending that gets cessation to matching it. I dislike numerology, but if you like segmenting films by decades, White Heat is the film that ends the 1940′s. Nothing comes terminate.

Movie Title: The Forsyte Saga, Series 1 The Forsyte Saga, Series 1 is available for streaming or downloading. |
Some of my readers might have very warm recollections of the 1967 sunless and white BBC mini-series (from before, I gain, the term was coined) that brought to life in 26 episodes and 21 hours all six of the nine novels written by John Galsworthy under the supertitle “The Forsyte Saga.” Few video adaptations quite as obliging were to advance again until “The Pallisers” attracted millions, and both would be very difficult to improve upon. Well, Granada has tried with what might be an 18 fraction remake of the Galsworthy saga; and the first series of 6 is now available on three DVDs from Acorn Media.
Taken on its believe terms, it is extremely good–but not perfect–and had me and wife comely well riveted to the mask on three successive evenings. It did not, however, erase fond memories of the earlier version. Now the 1967 version was “studio-bound, with static camera work, long scenes and long speeches” (as the press release puts it) . What the release leaves out was satisfactory acting by established stars and by newcomer Susan Hampshire whose Fleur made her a star.
For example, Eric Porter made Soames a sympathetic human who distress himself more than he afflict others, especially his dejected first wife Irene. In the 2002 version, Damian Lewis, looking like a demonic Steve McQueen, is 99% pure villain; and his mother’s recollection of how he loved a pet cat to death does puny to soften his character. It is only in the very last dinky of the last episode that he softens–but I will not command you why.

Another quandary is the actress playing Irene, Gina McKee. The new Irene was portrayed by the extremely radiant Nyree Dawn Porter; and all of the comments in the script about her looks were not contradicted by what we saw of her. Here (at the risk of being attacked for being another John Simon), McKee is simply resplendent but by no means heavenly. In fact, some of the profile shots accomplish her quite unattractive; and somehow all the praises the other characters teach about her are not justified visually. Then too, Soames’ sister, played in 1967 by Margaret Tyzack, was always referred to as unattractive and lucky to procure a husband at all, even if he is a “bounder.” Here Amanda Root, being very gorgeous indeed, draws no such disparaging comments in this unusual script.
The rest of the cast– Ioan Gruffudd, Rupert Graves, Gillian Kearney, Corin Redgrave, and so many more that I could only wish Acorn Media had provided a booklet with the cast as it did for “The Pallisers”–can stand comparison with the 1967 actors.
The production values are unprejudiced exquisite, but all too often the camera work becomes annoyingly “innovative” when one character discontinuance to the camera is speaking to one further away, and they are brought alternatively in and out of focus as they boom or listen.

But, as a humorous Shakespearean character says, comparisons are odious. Again, on its have terms, this is a very scrumptious if somewhat flawed remake of (so far) the first two Forsyte novels; and I can honestly recommend them for once and future viewing as I scrutinize forward to the next releases when they are filmed. But let us yet hope for some Kind Soul to restore the 1967 version not too long in the future.
I approached this remake with an begin mind, having already been enchanted by the novels and the modern series on PBS. This series is wonderful, but suffers greatly from miscasting of pivotal character of Irene Heron Forsyte. Gina McKee, a talented actress, does not vow the mystery and allure of Irene the procedure Nyree Dawn Porter had already done in the modern series. Gina McKee’s coldness and drabness makes it hard to acquire that men would be captivated by her. For instance, I found it hard to fill that Philip Bosinney would throw over sweet and radiant June for this coldblooded woman. Nyree Dawn Porter on the other hand was Irene Forsyte, matching the description of Galsworthy as a heavenly woman with brown eyes and blonde hair who was charming. Ms. Porter effectively portrayed the aversion she had for Soames Forsyte, her first husband, and the warmth and devotion she showed to her second husband, Young Jolyon and their son, Jon. She made it easy to understand why Bosinney would leave June for her.
The male characters were better: Rupert Graves, Ioan Gruffaud, Damien Lewis, and Corin Redgrave were improbable. Damien Lewis captured the tormented Soames quite well and Ioan Gruffaud was an improvement over the actor who played Bosinney in the earlier series. Corin Redgrave was an outstanding Broken-down Jolyon and Rupert Graves was sympathetic as Young Jolyon. The only spot was that Ms. McKee’s Irene looked more venerable than her savor interests, Philip and Young Jolyon. Irene was sixteen years younger than Young Jolyon, but Rupert Graves looked younger than Gina McKee. Ioan Gruffaud looked more capable to the actress playing June than the more ragged Irene.
The scriptwriters I felt took liberties with the modern that really clashed with what the characters were all about. For instance, the proud Young Jolyon after his exile from his family, would never have gone encourage to his Uncle James and Cousin Soames asking for a loan. This scene was totally out of character. Also, Irene was supposed to be gentle and passive; Gina McKee’s Irene slapped June. This too was totally out of character. There was never a scene with Soames asking his fiancee Annette to throw Young Jolyon and pregnant Irene out of a restaurant. The scene was absurd and totally unnecessary. It would have been better had the writers stayed with the original and had Soames seeing Irene and Jolyon in a crowd at Queen Victoria’s funeral. I also could have done without the graphic bedroom scenes racy Irene and Soames. The first series and the novels more appropriately left their intimate relationship to the imagination.
Overall, this was a edifying pain. I hope that care is taken in casting Fleur Forsyte, who was brilliantly played by Susan Hampshire in the earlier series. If she is miscast, like Irene, the second half will descend apart, since Fleur is such a pivotal character in share two.

I went to peer Jumper with some of my family when it was released, and I have to say I enjoyed it very powerful. I’ve liked Hayden Christensen since I saw “Life as a House,” and Samuel L. impartial rips up a villain role like nobody’s business. The special effects were very well done and I was blissful to regain that the main storyline they implied in the commercials is NOT what happened! Definite, the main character can teleport, but the rest…. The movie is billed as scifi/thriller type, but that’s a bit misleading. This is more like the Highlander films, a fantasy element in the sincere world.

The movie was ravishing quick paced with only a couple slower moments, and the character’s self-exploration once he discovers the ability was almost as grand as Peter Parker’s in the first Spider-Man movie. Actually, in one arrangement it was better. Peter uses his power to pick up a wrestling match and then jumps upright into the hero role. Our similarly-aged jumper, however, jumps good into a bank vault, and a store, and…! *grin* He really is an ordinary person with an fabulous ability. He extinct his ability for theft, but also for taking his surfboard to Fiji for the best waves. I liked the movie enough that I like a flash ordered the book. They are COMPLETELY different, but both top-notch for different reasons. The movie added a opposing force for jumpers (i.e. a “villain”) whereas in the book, David mostly battles his occupy inner demons (with a lot of introspection) . Plus, the very wintry character of Griffin was completely made-up for the film. His character adds broad action while giving viewers another jumper to identify with besides David. Though the movie had closure, they left it wide initiate for a sequel that I really hope gets made.
I contemplate some viewers were overly notable of this film. It’s not going to regain any oscars, but I was entertained and that’s the most vital criteria.

As to the DVD itself, I have to say, do NOT bewitch the 2-disc edition. The second disk contains only a digital copy. All the extras are on disc one, which the regular edition has! I really wish the product description had been more certain on this. I wouldn’t have paid the additional $6 for a digital copy which you have to spend a keycode to transfer. The code is located on a card in the case, but it clearly states to be careful not to lose it. Also, the outer sleeve has a holographic image of the camouflage art that is glued to the front of the sleeve. I don’t contemplate it lasting long. Finally, once again the studio includes ads in the case, but no insert with chapter index and extra features.
The extra features were shapely standard. There’s commentary, making of, interviews with the authors/producer etc, book to film featurette, and some deleted scenes (all of which I felt were rightly sever from the film) . The interviews were consuming sinc ethey touched on how the producer obviously changed the book, and how the author felt. Nothing spectacular here, but for a single disc edition these were perfectly beautiful – and far more than they offered with “the Bourne Ultimatium”.
Jumper [Theatrical Release]
“Jumper” is a generous movie that will appeal to science fiction lovers, humorous book junkies and anybody who’s ever wanted to move the world without blowing their bank fable. The epic is simple, the special effects and international sets are astonishing, and the acting is … well you can’t have anything. The young actors here are given very few lines to work with and might not meet the high standards of those who want every movie, including an action fantasy movie, to have award pleasant acting.
Many people will have to wonder what I wondered when I first read the reviews here: did I stare the same movie as everybody else? Why has this movie been panned by so many people?
Fans of the modern new tend to be against this movie because it deviates from the unique narrative and offers a great more film-friendly short version. Jumper: A Current (Jumper) There was a “prequel” sage written to transition fans to this narrative, and you can check out those reviews to glance their reactions. Jumper: Jumpscars – The Official Prequel to the Film (Jumper)
I savor grand acting, but I didn’t interrogate Indiana Jones to obtain for best actor. I likewise didn’t question too grand from this acting-wise. Hayden Christensen may not the most expressive actor, but the kid is young! Be realistic! Actually, Bilson’s portrayal as Millie was distinguished less impressive, an overly flirty one-dimensional select. And Samuel L. Jackson was almost getting paid twice for the role he played in “Unbreakable,” except here his character has the weapons and the strength to really fight the heroes.
Many people also seem to want more back-story and explainations for the science leisurely his ability to teleport. Yet don’t the backstories in most movies like this get them even less believable? How often in life do people cessation in the middle of something to clarify how and why everything is happening? I was tickled that they didn’t destroy time trying to interpret a work of imagination. This is a science fiction idea, nothing more.
This movie, when viewed as objective a movie, is vast entertainment and very fun to peruse. Coming into this unbiased as a movie-goer with no preconceived notions, I loved it. I could suspend disbelief because I know how to let my imagination go when it comes to science fiction.
Essentially, Hayden Christensen plays a young kid who is bullied at school and harassed by an alcoholic father. He discovers his ability to teleport, and soon is making a original life for himself teleporting all over the world. He soon discovers he’s not the only “Jumper” out there, and that a group of paladins are clear to get and extinguish jumpers. He returns to his hometown to glean his high school crush, and has to deal with telling her his secret ability.
The pacing was really well done. This movie moves along very expeditiously. It may leave a lot of unanswered questions but it also never leaves you dragging. The bag is well done, but there could have been more songs to execute a proper soundtrack. They design up for it by appealing from space to position with improbable cinematography.
And let me snarl you, the sets are astonishing! The camera work on top of Titanic Ben, at the Sphinx, on the Pyramids, and on and on, it was all astounding. For those wide shots alone it’s worth seeing in the theatres. I was so jealous this guy could go wherever he wanted, from Europe to Africa to Asia. I can’t wait for the DVD to salvage out which locations were shot on status and which were created via CGI or some other means.
Other special effects are impressive as well, as we scrutinize the “residue” of the jumper’s as they teleport. The paladins also have their maintain tools which are perhaps not as cold. There’s also an unbelievable couple of fight scenes that are peppered in.
The movie does waste very mercurial, and is clearly based on a spot designed for sequels. That leaves the account with a lot of loose ends. Collected, I for one would gladly subject myself to a sequel, even recognize forward to one.
If you want realism, going to study a fantasy thriller isn’t going to give it to you. If you want fun and admire science fiction or comics, this movie is fun to gawk.
Enjoy!

Family Variations![]()
DECEMBER BOYS is a fine little Australian film based on the novel by Michael Noonan (to whom the film is dedicated), adapted for the screen by Marc Rosenberg, and directed by Rod Hardy, and while the story takes place in the 1960s, it remains warmly contemporary in its message. And for once it presents the good side of orphanages, rather than the Dickens view.
In the Australian outback there is an orphanage run by nuns, a spot in the dry country where the arid landscape flattens everything until an occasional storm provides temporary lakes for fishing and playing. Four young lads are bonded not only by the fact that they are orphans dues to various sad reasons, but they all have birthdays in December – Maps (Daniel Radcliffe), Misty (Lee Cormie, Sparks (Christian Byers), and Spit (James Fraser. Fearing for retribution for their smoking and other mild infractions at the orphanage they are called into the headmaster’s office where they discover that a benefactor has decided to give the orphan boys a holiday each year. The four lads are to spend time with a family at a tiny ocean cove setting. Delighted, they are off to meet their family – Bandy (Jack Thompson) and his wife Skipper (Kris McQuade) – who live in a small shack beside a few other neighbors. The world seems to have opened to the boys and each finds first time joy in living – fishing from neighbor Shellback’s (Ralph Cotterill) old boat, riding a motorcycle with neighbor Fearless (Sullivan Stapleton), spying on the nude bathing wife of Fearless, Theresa (Victoria Hill), and finding first love with the young, seductive Lucy (Teresa Palmer). The boys are in heaven until Misty overhears Fearless and Theresa bemoaning their childless marriage and plan to adopt on of the boys. Challenges occur in physical, emotional, and spiritual ways: who will be the chosen ‘son’? The manner in which the answer is decided opens a whole new meaning to the concept of family.
The cast is ingratiating and the settings and the music are lovely. The supporting cast of nuns and priest (Frank Gallacher, Judi Farr, Carmel Johnson) are particularly fine. The screenplay fails to fully investigate the motivations of all of the characters and there remain holes in the plot line that could have easily been remedied: symbolism in the form of a wild stallion, a huge fish named Henry, and surreal appearances of the Virgin Mary become a bit obscure. But despite these flaws (and an ending, or epilogue, that is pure corny Hollywood), DECEMBER BOYS is heartwarming and a fine movie for the entire family. Recommended. Grady Harp, December 07
Boiled Lamb…![]()
Poorly promoted as “Harry Potter’s break out film”, December Boys was a gorgeous film to watch, its story sad and compelling. Anyone with an affection for the beauty that is Kangaroo Island will appreciate the stunning scenery in the film. I have not read the book, and apparently the story in the film is a radical departure from its source literature. The setting is the 1960s Oz Outback, an orphanage housing 4 boys ranging in age from 9-16, all of whom were born in the month of December (though they don’t know their birth dates). When a special donation is made to the orphanage, all 4 boys are taken on their first excursion to the sea, where the rumor awaits that one of them will be adopted by a family there. Having been best friends all their lives, the boys spend the summer competing for the family’s affection. The obvious pressure of being scrutinized and inevitably separated so that one of them can gain a family is hard to watch. The added experiences of the change in environment and meeting new people lightens the mood, though bring new hardships, as well. The narrative is the memory of one of the younger boys, Misty. I enjoyed the interjections of Misty’s young lucid mind having shaped his interpretation of events without the adult clarity to fully process them. Along that vein I loved how it wasn’t always evident how Misty’s imagination was interpreting events, as the film blurred odd surrealistic visuals.
All said this film was an excellent next move for an emerging child-to-adult actor. Radcliffe did well in it. He does restrained emotion very well, which allows viewers to be involved in the story but keep an emotional detachment from its progress. In that respect, the film isn’t over dramatized. It accomplishes allowing viewers to identify with each of the boys without being sentimental, which I think shows the craft of the writing and direction more than any other facet of the film. It’s clearly a very sad and traumatic time, in the adult mind watching it. But for the young ones living it it’s just… life, a time that when processed later as adults, they realized how pivotal it was.
I must say that I was not impressed with the portrayal of the femme fatale character in the film, who was the love interest of the eldest boy, Maps. The story gave no indication for why she behaved as she did. I felt that part of the story needed to be told in order for me to have any sympathy for her. There was an air of things not being quite right in her personal life, but without it being rooted more firmly and evidently into the main arc of Maps, she just came across two-dimensional.
No, it’s not a blockbuster, and I see now why it was never promoted as such. It is what it is–an indie film whose subtle artfulness would go the wayside for many mainstream audiences. I was, however, struck by the fact that a lot of people who would otherwise find Radcliffe to be narrow in his skills will not see this film; thus, it will take him even longer to break out of that HP type to which the general public and industry holds him.
Timeless![]()
Wonderful heartwarming pic. Beautiful scenery and great, genuine acting. Don’t expect explosions or fast-paced action, because this isn’t that kind of movie, but you can be assured that by the end you will ‘feel’ something real and touching.

I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Logan’s Speed fan, if such a thing exists, and was pleased to observe the film released to DVD. The transfer looks big, and the letterboxed format preserves the fair cinematography. The acting is, by and big, sparkling obliging. Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Richard Jordan are all in stunning get. Peter Ustinov chews scenery in his portions of the film, but isn’t that what you effect him in a movie for? The visual effects won an Oscar support in ’76, pre-Star Wars. I would residence their quality somewhere above Marooned, but below 2001:a Plot Oddyssey. The Aerial concept of the city that opens the film looks really cheesy, but the Carrousel sequence is downright eerie. It is even more much when you learn that the whole sequence was done in-camera, on-set with no compositing aside from the white beam of light that emanates from the ceiling. The compositing and matte paintings are breathtaking. The film takes a lot of flak for its costumes and for looking like it was shot in a shopping mall. I deem the costumes are moot–who know what we’ll be wearing in the future? These people live in a hedonistic, weather-free society. It stands to reason that they would be very revealing and purely cosmetic for those very reasons. As far as the survey of the sets goes–this is a materialistic, consumer-mad, hermetically sealed society that the film portrays–of course its going to study like a shopping mall. The film is not exactly an factual representsation of the events in the book (something I wouldn’t mind seeing someday) . Budgetary, time and technological constraints would made doing so impossible at the time. Composed, it holds up well on its acquire merits. One last note: Am I the only one who finds the fancy fable angle of this movie touching? It’s lively to leer two people experiencing adore for the first time, especially in the world portrayed in Logan’s Accelerate, where people don’t have lasting emotional ties to one another. What the treasure anecdote kind of implies is that this is the first time in hundreds of years that people have idea and felt in terms of strong emotions for each other. In an era like our maintain where the word is bandied about so grand as to be meaningless, it’s refreshing to observe a future where its meaning is rediscovered.
Logan’s Speed started off with a splendid astonishing concept–(courtesy of science fiction writers William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson) what if our youth obsessed society set everyone over the age of 30 (21 in the modern) to death as a means of population control? This film version of a classic cautionary legend is intermittantly successful. David Zelag Goodman’s screenplay condenses and changes around several key characters. Goodman’s script essentially refocuses the current into The Fugitive in the future. In the current current Francis (played brilliantly by the unhurried Richard Jordan) and the Ancient Man character (played as befuddled by Peter Ustinov) were one and the same. You’ll need to read the current to observe why this was an primary altered residence point.
Additionally, Sanctuary did exist in the new while here it’s definite that it’s something of an urban tale. While these status points might not seem vital, altering them radically reshaped the film. Serene, it’s sure that the film’s director, producer and screenwriter (respectively, Michael Anderson the leisurely Saul David and Goodman) wanted to streamline what could have been a confusing region if not layed out correctly.
The basic plot–In the future our society is enclosed in domes. As a means to control the population, everyone has a life clock crystal on their hand. When you approach 30 you have the option to become “renewed” in a ceremony attended by the citizens. Logan (Michael York) and Francis (Richard Jordan) are Sandmen who hunt, capture/or destroy runners (people who settle to not go through renewal and try to hasten) .

After one incident, Logan is debriefed by the computer that runs the city. The runner wore a symbol representing life. During this debriefing he is send undercover to become a “runner” and accumulate out 1) Who is slack the network that tries to pick up people out of the city and 2) If sanctuary exists. Logan’s life clock is prematurely venerable to 30. He contacts a girl who he had met before on the circuit (a system where people can “dial up” others for casual sex) who he had seen wearing the same symbol. Despite her better judgement, she elects to relieve him speed.
Francis, troubled that his friend is running, elects to slide him and either bring him serve for renewal or destroy him.
The film is quite generous despite some gaping set holes. Michael York gives a impassioned performance as Logan 5. Jenny Agutter is involving as Jessica. Richard Jordan shines as Logan’s obsolete partner Francis who feels betrayed and hunts Logan down. Roscoe Lee Brown is exceptional in his cameo as the demented cyborg Box. Michael Anderson, Jnr. gives a nice cameo performance as the surgeon hired to alter Logan’s appearence. Made for $6 million, Logan’s Urge looked quite salubrious when it was released in 1976. The symbolism of having Francis and Logan fight in the House of Representatives with an American flag was quite evident given the year of release (1976) .

In many respects the themes in the film are more timely than ever. The obsession with youth, looking worthy and plastic surgery have approach to account for our culture in the 21st Century. The only thing missing from the film are botox injections.
Jerry Goldsmith’s lustrous come by is a highlight of the film. Like his bag for Planet of the Apes, Goldsmith chose to go with a mix of sythesizers and orchestra to record the city of the future. He eschews cliches in his music and the various themes and cues are at turns suspenseful and witty. The optical effects are resplendent honorable given the time. The matte paintings by Albert Whitlock are outstanding and fairly convincing. The miniatures are a mixed bag. They didn’t spy completely convincing in 1976 nor do they today. Portion of the dilemma has to do with the fact that waters don’t fare well when placed in miniatures. You can’t miniaturize the bubbles and water drops. Also, the employ of the miniatures in combination with live action is quite grainy due to the film stock and amount of composites. Level-headed, if you can suspend your disbelief, you’ll be pleased the film despite its limitations.
Logan’s Hasten attempted to swear an adult cautionary memoir in a world of light weight escapist movies. It’s a commendable film and the film makers frequently bite off more than they can chew. I’d rather have a film that’s too ambitious than not at all.
Still, I delight in the ambitions if not the execution. It’s nice to finally have this splendid if flawed movie on DVD. The transfer is quite expedient although the print has a number of flaws. There’s also quite a bit of dirt evident on the print. These probably could have been cleared up with a disclose digital transfer. Additionally, the 5.1 soundtrack occasionally sounds “tinny” and when played in the stereo format can be quite difficult to hear.
The extras are exiguous but nice. The commentary by director Michael Anderson and Michael York is quite estimable and informative. A pity the terrific actor Richard Jordan isn’t around any longer to give us his perspective. I would have liked to view a current retrospective documentary on the making of the film. It’s not likely to happen, though as no one is going to champion this film at the expensive of other newer projects (particulary since producer Saul David is gone) . The featurette included is the current one made to promote the film. It’s actually blooming decent given the age and purpose of it. The trailer is included as well. The disc is a dual sided single layer DVD with the widescreen and pan & scan versions on the same disc.
