I looked forward to buying the next released season of The Simpsons on DVD every year, however, getting season eight this year is going to be a bittersweet occasion. Of course, I add yet another solid gold season of The Simpsons to my collection, but this in turn will result in the waste of my Simpsons collection. Yes, like many other reviewers of this DVD situation on Amazon, I part the same sentiment that this is the last season worth buying. From season 9 and onward, the reveal grew progressively worse in the long hurry, and lost what made it worth watching in the first station.
Basically, this is the last season of The Simpsons that retained its witty sense of humor, and didn’t resort to exclusive storylines and throwing in celebrity guest stars week after week. Episodes like “You Only Recede Twice” (I savor the 007 scene), “A Milhouse Divided”, “The Crooked World Of Marge Simpson”, Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(ANNOYED Verbalize) cious”, “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Reveal”, “Homer’s Phobia”, and the classic “Homer’s Enemy” exudes the shows last ounces of genius from script to cloak. The storylines of these episodes are delectable, and appealing from commence to accomplish. The witty humor of the past seasons is well retained in season eight with many side splitting moments of hillarity to note it. This hard boiled British film noir about a croupier in a London casino is destined to become a classic. With his slicked-back dim hair and striking top-notch looks, Clive Owen brings a frosty, cynical, self-confident elegance to his role as Jack Manfred, a croupier (dealer) in a London casino. The film centers around Jack Manfred, a struggling-writer-turned-card-dealer. Jack moves through his life like a ghost, calm and disinterested in the events of his enjoy life. Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the black tone of his mutter, and the spy of regret and hope in his eyes. In her first film (considered one of the progenitors of French Recent Wave), La Pointe Courte (1956), Varda explores the disintegration of a relationship between a married couple (Silvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret) . In Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), Varda confronts themes of existentialism, mortality, despair, and what it means to live a meaningful life. Her film follows two hours (in real-time) in the life of a young pop singer (Corinne Marchand) as she waits to gather biopsy results from her doctor at 7 o’clock. Before her doctor’s appointment, Cléo meets with several friends and strangers in 1960s Paris, while at the same time contemplating her mortality. The film features a gather by Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and cameos appearances by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. The Criterion edition of this film features a newly restored digital transfer, supervised and common by director Agnès Varda, “Remembrances” (2005), a documentary on the making of the film, featuring interviews with Varda and actors Corinne Marchand and Antoine Bourseiller, a gallery of paintings by Hans Baldung Grien, whose work inspired the character of Cléo, an excerpt from a 1993 French television program featuring Madonna and Varda talking about the film, “Cléo’s Accurate Path Through Paris” (2005), a short film retracing, on a motorcycle, Cléo’s steps through Paris, “Les fiancés du pont Macdonald” (1961), a short film directed by Varda, featuring some of her original wave colleagues, with Varda explaining why the film was featured in Cléo, “L’opéra Mouffe” (1958), an early short by Varda, with a win by Georges Delerue, the theatrical trailer, fresh and improved English subtitle translation, and a current essay by Adrian Martin and a written introduction by Agnès Varda.
3. Le bonheur (Happiness) .
In Le bonheur (1965), Varda confronts issues of fidelity and happiness in a novel, self-centered world. The film tells the myth of a young husband François (Jean-Claude Drouot) who embarks on an affair with an graceful postal worker, despite the fact that he is married to the pleasing Thérèse (Claire Drouot) . 4. Sans toit ni loi (Vagabond)
In the best film in the collection, Vagabond (1985), Varda chronicles the life of a young, enigmatic drifter Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire), found frozen to death in a ditch at the beginning of the film. From this image, the film goes backwards in time to depict Mona’s transition from an office worker to her life of a wandering vagabond, free from any responsibility. The unique French title, “Sans toit ni loi,” translates as “without roof or law.” The Criterion edition of Vagabond includes a newly restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and popular by director Agnes Varda, “Remembrances” (2003), a documentary on the making of the film, including interviews with Sandrine Bonnaire and other cast members, “The Legend of an Ragged Lady” (2003), a short portion in which Varda revisits actress Marthe Jarnias, who plays the used aunt in the film, “Music and Dolly Shots,” (2003), a conversation between Varda and composer Joanna Bruzdowicz, a 1986 radio interview with Varda and writer Nathalie Sarraute, who inspired the film, the theatrical trailer, novel and improved English subtitle translation, and a current essay by Chris Darke and written introduction by Agnes Varda.

La Pointe Courte, Cleo from 5 to 7, Le bonheur, and Vagabond. Cléo from 5 to 7 and vagabond are releleases and I have already written reviews for those when they were released separately, I will be more brief on the reviews.
La Pointe Courte is Varda’s first film and is about a couple in coastal southern France experiencing marital woes. The film is notion to have inspired the unusual wave movement in French cinema and is one of her most well-liked films. The special features are an interview with Agnès Varda and scenes from a 1964 French television appearance by Varda.
Cléo from 5 to 7 is about a young woman who strolls around Paris for two hours while she awaits the results of a biopsy. The film was map ahead of its time for it being in real-time impartial like the television series 24 or the film “Phone Booth.”

Vagabond released in France as “Sans toit ni loi” is about a homeless woman who is found stupid at the beginning of the film and is a flashback discover at the last days of her life.
The special features are a theatrical trailer, a docomentary on the film’s production, a survey at the actress Marthe Jarnias, who plays the feeble lady in the film, a conversation between Varda and the film’s composer, Joanna Bruzdowicz, and a 1986 radio interview with Varda and writer, Nathalie Sarraute.

In this week’s “Entertainment Weekly” Stephen King picked “Maria Burly of Grace” as his accepted film of 2004, which is certainly an enchanting thing to know before watching this independent film from writer-director Joshua Marston. The narrate on the DVD screen shows Maria Alvarez (Catalina Sandino Moreno) posed as if she were about to receive Holy Communion. Only instead of receiving the host Maria is about to swallow a pellet containing heroin wrapped in the finger of a latex glove. Maria is 17 and works in Colombia picking the thorns off of roses before they are shipped overseas. Although she is clearly a smart girl, Maria discovers that she is pregnant. To originate things worse her boyfriend is a loser, her boss at work is a jerk, and her family needs her to provide money. So after Maria quits her job she is introduced to a man in Bogotá who will give her $5,000 for flying to Modern York City with 62 of those pellets in her stomach as a “mule” for a drug lord. For Maria that amount is a virtual fortune and seems worth the risk that one of those pellets could wreck in her stomach and end her. So she practices swallow grapes so that she will be able to do what needs to be done to pick up her money.
There will be several mules on this particular flight, a practice known as “shotgunning” that Marston learned about and which inspired his fresh script. The understanding is that if you effect several mules on the same plane and understanding on U.S. Customs catching one of them, which would do it easier for the rest of the drugs to acquire through. Also on the plane with Maria are her friend, Blanca (Yenny Paola Vega), who is jealous of the money her friend is going to beget, a mule on her third hurry, Lucy (Giulied Lopez), who wants to visit her sister in Unique York City, and at least one more experience drug smuggler.

“Maria Fat of Grace” sets the stage for the great high-tail by paying attention to the process by which Maria first practices, and then swallows all those pellets. This serves to underscore how uncertain this is going to be and you know that something is going to go horribly unpleasant. Since “Maria Chunky of Grace” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2004, where it won the Audience Award, Moreno’s performance would be eligible for the next Academy Awards. Usually Oscar nominations focus on movies released in December and as a rule ignore anything released before the Summer blockbuster season, but what Moreno did in this film might be too impressive to forget (Addendum: For once I was just and Moreno is nominated for Best Actress) .

This Winner of the Audience Award at Sundance is a terrific film; unsightly, engaging, and engaging. But what makes Maria Fleshy of Grace an astounding experience is its ability to be ordinary. We gape everyday life here, plausible motives, convincing decisions, and characters who live at ground level. The movie’s suspense is heightened by being generated entirely at the race of life, and showing us what probably would happen, and not some implausible fairy-tale.

While on the outside the explain may seems like another “90210″/”The OC” teen-soap, but it really isn’t. This is a rich, emotional, and movie relationship-drama that once it gets your hooks into you, you cannot end watching. Unlike most shows of its genre its realistic and each of the major characters represents a person you probably knew in high school. Yet, they probably weren’t the most accepted kids. They were the kids you were friends with, hung out with, the ones you actually knew. It is a downright disgrace that ABC only allowed this series 19 episodes. More than almost any other expose I’ve ever watched I would have loved to gawk these character bloom into full-grown adults through their high school (and possibly college years) .
But what we are ultimately are given is unbiased this one 8-month snap-shot into these characters lives. But this could ultimately effect this exhibit the masterpiece that it really is. There was no room for it go downhill, no room for error. And forever it will be remembered. It has been years since my sister and I sat up all night long one weekend watching nasty copies of these episodes on VHS, and I cannot wait for Halloween, when I will finally have a chance to scrutinize them on DVD, almost anew.

The writing and acting is so layered, complex and rich that the point to affords modern meanings and interpretations, even as its viewers “grow up.”
I owned the previous DVD box dwelling, and this one is a major improvement for several reasons:
1) Six episodes have commentary w/writers and actors, including Claire Danes in “Self-Esteem,” Devon Gummersall in “Life of Brian,” and (my approved) Wilson Cruz in “My So-Called Christmas.”
2) Extras DVD with cast and a making-of/retrospective featurette, and interviews w/Danes and Holzman.
3) Mountainous 36-pg book, lovingly made, with episode liner notes, song lyrics, letters, and other extraordinary memorabilia. Includes notes from Holzman and an essay by Janeane Garofalo.
4) Worthy better title screen/menu, both aestically and functionally. Each disc opens with a 20-sec renowned clip (“I’m in love/His name is Jordan Catalano…” for disc one; Angela’s “Can you please objective clarify geometry to me? ” plea to Brian for disc 4)
5) Noteworthy better, more streamlined packaging overall.
NOTE: I can’t comment on image quality between this DVD dwelling and the 2003 one. I watched both on an HDTV w/progressive scan DVD player, and both looked gorgeous to me. I have no notion if this DVD place is supposed to observe better or enhanced in some diagram from the previous version–basically, it looks and sounds huge.
Buy one for yourself and for everyone you know. Even if they’re 12. They’ll need it.

Some of my readers might have very warm recollections of the 1967 sunless and white BBC mini-series (from before, I gain, the term was coined) that brought to life in 26 episodes and 21 hours all six of the nine novels written by John Galsworthy under the supertitle “The Forsyte Saga.” Few video adaptations quite as obliging were to advance again until “The Pallisers” attracted millions, and both would be very difficult to improve upon. Well, Granada has tried with what might be an 18 fraction remake of the Galsworthy saga; and the first series of 6 is now available on three DVDs from Acorn Media.
Taken on its believe terms, it is extremely good–but not perfect–and had me and wife comely well riveted to the mask on three successive evenings. It did not, however, erase fond memories of the earlier version. Now the 1967 version was “studio-bound, with static camera work, long scenes and long speeches” (as the press release puts it) . What the release leaves out was satisfactory acting by established stars and by newcomer Susan Hampshire whose Fleur made her a star.
For example, Eric Porter made Soames a sympathetic human who distress himself more than he afflict others, especially his dejected first wife Irene. In the 2002 version, Damian Lewis, looking like a demonic Steve McQueen, is 99% pure villain; and his mother’s recollection of how he loved a pet cat to death does puny to soften his character. It is only in the very last dinky of the last episode that he softens–but I will not command you why.

Another quandary is the actress playing Irene, Gina McKee. The new Irene was portrayed by the extremely radiant Nyree Dawn Porter; and all of the comments in the script about her looks were not contradicted by what we saw of her. Here (at the risk of being attacked for being another John Simon), McKee is simply resplendent but by no means heavenly. In fact, some of the profile shots accomplish her quite unattractive; and somehow all the praises the other characters teach about her are not justified visually. Then too, Soames’ sister, played in 1967 by Margaret Tyzack, was always referred to as unattractive and lucky to procure a husband at all, even if he is a “bounder.” Here Amanda Root, being very gorgeous indeed, draws no such disparaging comments in this unusual script.
The rest of the cast– Ioan Gruffudd, Rupert Graves, Gillian Kearney, Corin Redgrave, and so many more that I could only wish Acorn Media had provided a booklet with the cast as it did for “The Pallisers”–can stand comparison with the 1967 actors.
The production values are unprejudiced exquisite, but all too often the camera work becomes annoyingly “innovative” when one character discontinuance to the camera is speaking to one further away, and they are brought alternatively in and out of focus as they boom or listen.

But, as a humorous Shakespearean character says, comparisons are odious. Again, on its have terms, this is a very scrumptious if somewhat flawed remake of (so far) the first two Forsyte novels; and I can honestly recommend them for once and future viewing as I scrutinize forward to the next releases when they are filmed. But let us yet hope for some Kind Soul to restore the 1967 version not too long in the future.
I approached this remake with an begin mind, having already been enchanted by the novels and the modern series on PBS. This series is wonderful, but suffers greatly from miscasting of pivotal character of Irene Heron Forsyte. Gina McKee, a talented actress, does not vow the mystery and allure of Irene the procedure Nyree Dawn Porter had already done in the modern series. Gina McKee’s coldness and drabness makes it hard to acquire that men would be captivated by her. For instance, I found it hard to fill that Philip Bosinney would throw over sweet and radiant June for this coldblooded woman. Nyree Dawn Porter on the other hand was Irene Forsyte, matching the description of Galsworthy as a heavenly woman with brown eyes and blonde hair who was charming. Ms. Porter effectively portrayed the aversion she had for Soames Forsyte, her first husband, and the warmth and devotion she showed to her second husband, Young Jolyon and their son, Jon. She made it easy to understand why Bosinney would leave June for her.
The male characters were better: Rupert Graves, Ioan Gruffaud, Damien Lewis, and Corin Redgrave were improbable. Damien Lewis captured the tormented Soames quite well and Ioan Gruffaud was an improvement over the actor who played Bosinney in the earlier series. Corin Redgrave was an outstanding Broken-down Jolyon and Rupert Graves was sympathetic as Young Jolyon. The only spot was that Ms. McKee’s Irene looked more venerable than her savor interests, Philip and Young Jolyon. Irene was sixteen years younger than Young Jolyon, but Rupert Graves looked younger than Gina McKee. Ioan Gruffaud looked more capable to the actress playing June than the more ragged Irene.
The scriptwriters I felt took liberties with the modern that really clashed with what the characters were all about. For instance, the proud Young Jolyon after his exile from his family, would never have gone encourage to his Uncle James and Cousin Soames asking for a loan. This scene was totally out of character. Also, Irene was supposed to be gentle and passive; Gina McKee’s Irene slapped June. This too was totally out of character. There was never a scene with Soames asking his fiancee Annette to throw Young Jolyon and pregnant Irene out of a restaurant. The scene was absurd and totally unnecessary. It would have been better had the writers stayed with the original and had Soames seeing Irene and Jolyon in a crowd at Queen Victoria’s funeral. I also could have done without the graphic bedroom scenes racy Irene and Soames. The first series and the novels more appropriately left their intimate relationship to the imagination.
Overall, this was a edifying pain. I hope that care is taken in casting Fleur Forsyte, who was brilliantly played by Susan Hampshire in the earlier series. If she is miscast, like Irene, the second half will descend apart, since Fleur is such a pivotal character in share two.

In 1996, Hugh Wilson directed a very funny comedy about three friends that were all dumped by their husbands for younger women in the film “First Wives Club”. Based upon the 1992 novel of the same name by Olivia Goldsmith (1949-2004), the three friends (who had met in college) are brought back together after their fourth friend, Cynthia Swann Griffin (Stockard Channing), jumped from her penthouse apartment in Manhattan after her husband left and she felt totally alone. Upon learning about each others similar marital problems, the surviving friends, which include the boisterous Brenda Cushman (Bette Midler), the movie actress Elise Elliot (Goldie Hawn) and the timid Annie Paradis (Diane Keaton), decide to work together to attain vengence upon their ex-husbands. Brenda’s ex-husband, Morton ‘Morty’ Cushman (Dan Hedaya), wants to marry the very young and shallow Shelly Stewart (Sarah Jessica Parker). Elise’s ex-husband, Bill Atchison (Victor Garber), is dating the very young aspiring actress Phoebe LaVelle (Elizabeth Berkley). Annie’s separated husband, Aaron Paradis (Stephen Collins), is having an affair with Annie’s therapist, Dr. Leslie Rosen (Marcia Gay Harden). To assist them, the trio of first wives enlist help from their friends, which include the interior decorator Duarto Feliz (Bronson Pinchot), Annie’s daughter Chris Paradis (Jennifer Dundas), the socialite Gunilla Garson Goldberg (Maggie Smith) and Brenda’s Uncle Carmine (Philip Bosco).
Though the plot was somewhat weak and the acting and screen writing were not Oscar-worthy, “First Wives Club” is still very entertaining and engaging. The most memorable acting comes from Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, Sarah Jessica Parker and Victor Garber. The film did receive an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score. Memorable scenes in the film include Cynthia on her balcony, her funeral, the trio at the restaurant, Elise visiting Bill’s office, Annie’s visits with Dr. Leslie Rosen, Morty’s commercial, Shelly with Gunilla, Morty’s apartment, the auction, the fight, Annie’s purchase, Chris’ announcement and the closing scenes. Other memorable characters include Annie’s mother Catherine MacDuggan (Eileen Heckart, 1919-2001), Dr. Morris Packman (Rob Reiner) and Brenda’s son Jason (Ari Greenberg), as well as cameos by Ivana Trump, Kathie Lee Gifford, Gloria Steinem and former NYC mayor Edward I. Koch. Olivia Goldsmith also made an unaccredited cameo. Overall, I rate “First Wives Club” with 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a fun film that both women and men can enjoy, though women may enjoy it more since the men in the film are the bad guys.
Great Movie!
I guess I’m a bit behind the eight ball – I just watched this movie for the first time last week – and it was great!!!
Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton & Bette Midler work wonderfully together in this movie, and they each play their characters to the hilt!!!
The gist of the movie is that these women were all great friends during their teen years but had lost touch through the years. The suicide death of one of their “group” brought them all together once again. While catching up, they realized that they were all going through similar situations in their marriages – they were all being cheated on by their husbands!
Once they figure this out, they decide to put their heads together to come up with inventive ways to get back at their husbands for doing this to them – and I must say they do an excellent job at it!!!
Overall, this is a great comedy to watch with your girlfriends -I’m not sure if the men would be as eager to watch it with you. I give “The First Wives Club” 2 thumbs up!
Sweet Revenge?
I enjoyed the “First Wives Club”! Directed by Hugh Wilson in 1996, it’s a movie many women can identify with about four college friends; Cynthia Swann Griffin (Stockard Channing), Elise Eliot Atchison (Goldie Hawn), Brenda Morelli Cushman (Bette Midler), and Annie MacDuggan Paradis (Diane Keaton). After graduation, each busy with her own life, time races by and the four lose track of each other. When Cynthia commits suicide Elise, Brenda, and Annie are reunited at her funeral and begin rekindling their friendship.
Getting reacquainted they learn that each of them has been tossed aside and replaced by younger woman in their men’s lives, after many years of marriage. Brenda is separated from her husband but hopes to reconcile, Annie and her husband are in therapy and also separated, and Elise, an actress who worries she is past her prime, is faced with splitting everything and making alimony payments to her soon to be ex-husband. During a pity party, they realize it would be much better to spend their energy in getting even than to staying angry, feeling sorry for themselves, or following Cynthia’s lead. To accomplish their goal a strategy tailored to each man is set in motion. I especially enjoyed the scene where Elise delivers the proceeds from the sale of their assets to her husband!
Although the girls start out seeking revenge, their focus begins to shift as the self-confidence they had in their youth is resurrected and they realize that life, like each of them, still has much more to offer. A great ending!
