What attracted me to this series was the artistic connections to Serial Experiments – Lain, which was an outstanding example of what anime is worthy of out of genre. What kept me from getting to it when it first came out was that, depending on the review I looked at, it either sounded dreary or was painted as a ‘magical girl’ chronicle. Now that I’ve seen this first DVD I can picture that it is neither what I expected nor what the critics reported, but something quite fresh.

A young girl finds herself plummeting through the air only to wake up unexpectedly in a outlandish bed surrounded by people with wings. She discovers that, like her, each has awoken from a dream to score themselves in the Weak Home with no memory of the past. And like them, she grows wings and acquires a halo. The remainder of these four episodes follow Rakka as she adjusts to her recent like and discovers the world of the Haibane, the Obsolete Home in which they live, and the town of Glie, which forms their boundaries.

There are countless mysteries. Rakka and her friends like, Kuu, Hikari, Kana and Reku, only know the contrivance things are, but have no conception how this came to be. Thus the origins of the Haibane (charcoal feathers) and their role are mysteries. They exist within the walls of Glie, where no one, Haibane or normal human is allowed to enter the outside world. Only birds and the masked Toga (traders) can to so, and the Toga may not vow. Amidst this, the Haibane themselves carry on, working in the town and living off its largess with surprising acceptance and a astronomical deal of charm.

And charm is what this series has a surfeit. The Haibane and the townsfolk all seem bounded together in a supportive fashion, which is almost, a model of what most of us would deem of as a perfect community. It doesn’t engage long before the viewer becomes complete enchanted. Not unbiased with the record, but the art, acting, and music as well. Despite all the signs that things are not really as they appear you will win yourself hoping that things will go on honest as they are, that the glimmer of light here will prevail.

What the future will bring, I can’t say. But I hope we glean add least a few more DVD’s of the tranquility and almost Zen-like atmosphere that permeates these first episodes. This is a glowing epic that unfolds in the pastel shades of some fabulous artwork and character create. In any case, I bear you will score the originality of the account and its characters refreshing and worth pursuing.

As an artist I am in esteem with this series. The world is richly portrayed, and original in it’s blend of asian, european and wonderful elements. The memoir is insensible to form but in a friendly intention, there is a gentle, soft telling of a yarn here which is rare and new, and the characters and unfolding state are better for it. You can’t see this series without becoming aware of the positive care and devotion the artists have save into it.

This is an animation which evolved from a written memoir, which evolved from a portion of poetry, so maybe there is some literary aspect of it that failed to acquire the Amazon reviewer. But don’t absorb it, there is a lot going for Haibane Renmei beyond it’s artwork.

The anecdote, the characters, and the world they live in have depth and heart. It compares favorably to some of anime’s substantial titles, notably “Captivating Away,” “Castle in the Sky,” “Lain,” and “Key the Metal Idol.” If you liked any of these, you will savor Haibane Renmei. I strongly recommend it.

I’ve seen my piece of documentaries, and I’ve seen a few that have dealt with disability. “Murderball” easily eclipses them all.

Too often people with disabilites gain thrust into the role of flawless inspirations, this principle has held lawful across both fictional and non-fictional films alike. It was because of this trend that I approached “Murderball” with cautious optimism.

It was very surprising indeed when “Murderball” was in fact a genuinely uplifting and challenging film,a film that dared to really demonstrate its subjects complete with flaws. Two other disability-related documentaries I’ve seen are “Rolling” and “King Gimp” Both are probably extremely spirited to an able-bodied audience, but speaking as someone who is in a wheelchair, some of the moments in those films were downright horrifying and depressing. For example in “Rolling”, a woman falls out of bed while dressing herself and videotapes her barely censored nude rescue by an able-bodied friend and her husband. Able-bodied audences would say, “what grit and determination” I sat there and prayed that would never happen to me. “King Gimp” profiles a supremely talented artist and parts of his record are piquant especially to someone like myself who wants to have a career in the arts. Yet, it too uncomfortable me because mighty of the film concerns the subject’s unrequited like for a female caregiver. He laments that he will never accept anyone.

“Murderball” on the other hand avoids those pitfalls and showcases some of the nastiest, (…) ever to hit the hide and even though I most certainly do not fit into that category and wouldn’t be caught humdrum playing the titular sport I enjoyed every cramped of it. All of the people in this film have a level of independence that for the moment I can only dream of, and they are mighty more impaired than I am in positive respects. So seeing them doing something they fancy, and quite a few of them FINDING fancy is absolutely, unadulteratedly racy. It is the first documentary I’ve seen that left me jubilant through the waste credits.

“Murderball” is ostensibly about quadriplegic wheelchair rugby and there are some truly thrilling scenes of play between archrivals the USA and Canada…to be determined.

But what “Murderball” is really about is the undeniable, unstoppable, fire-in-the-belly will to live and more specifically the drive to overcome adversity: both of spirit and of body.

Athletes Ticket Zupan, Joe Soares, etc. all reveal, really inhabit such a definite, go-for-broke bewitch on life and living that you cannot serve but be embarrassed when you launch to consider of your piddly problems.

One of the things a Documentary should do is voice and mumble and “Murderball” has those two topics covered—no jam. But “Murderball” also gives you Hope and that is a quality to which most other films can only aspire.

After producing some mildly humorous comedy shorts at Educational Pictures, Buster got his chance to work again for a major studio. Columbia was the haven for comedians in the behind 1930′s & 1940′s, they were #1 in producing comedy shorts at this time! Clear, these don’t compete with Buster’s classic, self produced, tranquil comedies of the 1920′s. But these are not to be missed by fans. This has been a somewhat lost fragment of Buster’s cinema history. HOOORAY!!!

Here are the 10 Buster Keaton Columbia Pictures comedy shorts that Sony owns:

1941

After these delectable 17 puny comedies were made, Buster was reduced to being unprejudiced an extra, the comedy relief, in feature films.

I am ecstatic to seek that Sony has finally recognized that the 3 Stooges aren’t the only comedy short classics they gain.

A treat for Keaton Fans. Not his best work, but some very animated moments can be found in these shorts.

Keaton made some of the funniest, most inventive, and witty calm shorts and features of all time. He didn’t unprejudiced arrive up with a radiant observe gag, he played with audience expectations and often found an extra twist. Along the procedure he experimented with camera tricks, techniques and mighty more. He wasn’t merely a clown, but an artist. Many already know this.

In the tedious 1920′s and early 1930s, Keaton was under contract to MGM. They took away a lot of his creative control and forced him to star in stage adaptations and team up with Jimmy Durante in a couple of movies. Keaton was having some personal problems as well, and his drinking was out of control. The movies weren’t humorous, weren’t accepted and he was more and more difficult to work with. His career was at a uncouth point by the mid 1930s. He was let go from MGM.

By the gradual 1930s he had stopped drinking and his personal life was distinguished happier. Columbia convinced him to do a series of sound shorts under the direction of people like Del Lord and Jules White. The shorts were made between 1939 to 1941 at Columbia Pictures utilizing the same crews and directors as Columbia’s 3 Stooges shorts. Keaton fans will fetch a level-headed very agile 45 year acrobatic Keaton able to beget magic moments. The budgets were shrimp and the shooting schedule was usually confined to 3 days. Some of the shorts were not written with Keaton in mind, but there are moments in every single offering where Keaton’s skill and experience shine.

Ten shorts have been tranquil on the two discs (they are not arranged chronologically here-who knows why) among the gems are Pest from the West (a solid abridged remake of the mostly abominable feature film he did in the U.K. called: “The Invader ” aka “An Obsolete Spanish Custom) . He re-stages allotment of his dilapidated vaudeville act in the short “Taming of the Snood”. There’s a very comical Keaton classic routine (with a cramped twist) in “Nothing but Pleasure”. A fabulous dinky bit of dance choreography makes “General Nuisance” delectable, “So You Won’t Exclaim” has several fun sequences and excellent utilize of a stock wander scene, and the best of the shorts is the last one he did for Columbia called “She’s Oil Mine” which finishes off with one of the best versions he’s ever done of his famed `duel scene’.

These were cheap lickety-split made comedies cranked out by Columbia’s short division. The schedule frustrated Keaton who felt with a few more shooting days on each short he could have improved them. They wanted him to invent more, but he decided to not re-new his contract. He successfully stopped drinking, found a life partner, and led a modest life gradual the scenes (writing gags for other stars-particularly Red Skeleton) for nearly a decade. Then by the 1950s he had been re-discovered and made many appearances on television, did numerous live shows and eventually made industrial films, appeared in miniature roles in several movies, and was moved by how many people re-discovered and enjoyed his outmoded mute films.

The DVD’s include commentaries by a few film scholars and honorable fan club folks that hurry on each of the shorts. They give you some animated perspective and some fun trivia notes if you care to listen to them. For the DVD collection a unique mini-documentary was created that gives a retrospective of Keaton’s transition from tranquil movies to MGM talkies to the making of these Columbia shorts. The documentary takes the objective concept that these films were not nearly as salubrious as the peaceful shorts and while animated, Keaton was not proud of his work on these with the exception of “Pest from the West’ and `She’s Oil Mine’.

Don’t interrogate the best of Keaton here, but if you are a fan, there’s a lot here to be pleased. Expedient value for the money provided you know what to inquire of.

John Cassavetes was an artist who believed that filmmaking’s salvation lay in “individual expression” and applied this concept to his gain movies. He is often credited as the father of American independent cinema and to be determined without him there would be no Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch or John Sayles. For years, fans of Cassavetes’ movies have had to suffer with grainy copies and harmful transfers on DVD (or, quite often no availability at all) . The folks at Criterion have answered their prayers with a unbelievable box position with five of the man’s movies and Charles Kiselyak’s yarn documentary.

The Shadows disc features an interview with one of the film’s stars, Lelia Goldini, who talks about how she met Cassavetes and her impressions of the man. She also covers the improv exercises that he would stage and how they developed into the movie. There is also an interview with Seymour Cassel who reminisces about how he met Cassavetes and how he got a job on the crew making Shadows. A accurate get is never-before-seen soundless footage of rehearsals for the film in Cassavetes’ acting workshop. Also included is featurette examining the painstaking restoration process that transformed the novel print into this unique stunning version. Finally, there is an favorable behind-the-scenes collected gallery and a trailer.

Faces features an alternate opening sequence that was originally screened in Toronto and rearranges the chronology of scenes. “Cineastes de Notre Temps” is a French TV program that interviewed Cassavetes in ’65 while he was making Faces and then again in ’68 after it had been screened. The first interview finds him in a mischievous mood as he jokes about making a musical of Crime and Punishment. In the second interview he claims that he’s the worst director but tries to form an environment that allows the actors to whisper themselves honestly. “Making Faces” is a 42-minute featurette with current interviews with Gena Rowlands, Lynn Carlin, Seymour Cassel and editor/producer Al Ruban. Rowlands talks about how they financed the movie themselves so they’d have complete control while Cassel talks about how Cassavetes was his best friend and mentor. Finally, Ruban discusses the equipment he outmoded to shoot the film in the “Lighting and Shooting the Film” featurette. He goes through specific scenes via text and clips from the movie providing satisfactory insight into how clear techniques were achieved.

A Woman Under the Influence features an audio commentary by cameraman Mike Ferris and sound recordist/composer Bo Harwood. This movie marked the first time they worked together and they would go on to collaborate with Cassavetes on The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Opening Night. Next up, is an suitable conversation between Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk. They talk about Cassavetes’ come to filmmaking and fondly portray anecdotes about making the movie. There is also an audio interview done with Cassavetes in `75 that covers a wide variety of topics: improvisation, casting, directing and so forth. Rounding out the disc is a trailer and a rare collection of behind-the-scenes photos taken on the station of the movie.

Included on The Killing of a Chinese Bookie disc is the unique 135 miniature version released in `76 and the truncated 108 runt version that came out in ’78. The first version was bustle job and became a commercial and significant failure. It was pulled from theatres after a week and two years later Cassavetes prick almost 30 minutes out and re-released it. There is a captivating interview with Ben Gazzara and Al Ruban. The actor recounts how the first audience to inspect the movie hated it and this broke his heart. Ruban also talks about the negative reaction and Cassavetes’ desire to re-cut his movie as a result. There is another audio interview with Cassavetes where he talks at length about working in genres and how he got the opinion for the movie. Finally, there is a collection of rare, behind-the-scenes photographs.

Opening Night features a conversation between Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara. They exclaim warmly and fondly about their experiences working on the movie, recounting several stories. There is also an interview with Al Ruban who talks about Cassavetes complete immersion in every aspect of his movies: sets, costumes and so on. There is another audio interview with Cassavetes where he talks about the play that occurs within the film and comparing movies to plays. Finally, there is a trailer.

Cassavetes fiercely believed that “to compromise an notion is to soften it, to manufacture an excuse for it, to betray it.” The five films that are included in this box situation certainly adhere to these words and describe the man’s pure and unfiltered artistic expression. This is an impressive box area that also includes a 68-page booklet with essays by Cassavetes and critics and interviews with the man that does a stout job putting his movies and personal philosophy into the obedient context.

I get it both ironic and strangely appropriate that “John Cassavetes: Five Films” was released on the same day as “Star Wars Trilogy” by George Lucas. These characterize two of the most diametrically opposed styles of filmmaking ever screened: the bloated, glitzy and ultimately shallow films of Lucas against the lean, scrappy and completely fulfilling films of Cassavetes.

For those who are not familiar with John Cassavetes, this region will introduce you to the work of one of film’s greatest artists. The authenticity and honesty of Cassavetes’ advance to filmmaking are apparent in every shot. These films are as cutting-edge and original today as they were thirty years ago and they will fabricate you contemplate and feel in ways you never have before.

For those who know and treasure the work of Cassavetes, this state is a much-welcome improvement over previous releases. I can’t say enough about the quality of the transfers. The extras are satisfactory and informative and they encourage give a better opinion of the man gradual the camera and his revolutionary filmmaking techniques.

Although this spot would have been further enhanced by the inclusion of the legendary first version of Shadows as well as commentary tracks and essays by Professor Ray Carney (the world’s leading Cassavetes scholar), “John Cassavetes: Five Films” stands alone as the best introduction/compilation of Cassavetes’ work and is an critical addition to any film library.

LEGEND never really found an audience in theatres despite Ridley Scott and Universal’s constant tinkering with the final crop. Seems many movies of this era were victims of audience test screenings, and the desire to give people a commercial product that went down easy — glance BRAZIL for a prime example of how studios consider (the “worship conquers all” version) . So Yarn was severely edited and rescored with a rapid (but often effective gather by TANGERINE DREAM) . It was short on residence and long on art direction, but sumptuous visuals and an all-out acting job by Tim Curry and make-up artist Rick Bottin made the movie an easy well-liked of many fantasy fans. The movie looks handsome, and the yarn is a universal fall into archetypes. Nothing immoral with that, it certainly worked for STAR WARS!

This DVD collection gives you two versions of Epic — the fresh director’s lop with over twenty minutes of added footage and the current Goldsmith score; and in addition, you earn the modern US release. In essence you bag two different movies! The moods vary, the characters seem a cramped different, with whole fresh speeches and images to like. If you are a fan of the movie or Ridley Scott it’s a MUST-HAVE! This is what DVD dreams are made of. While many bemoan the fact BLADE RUNNER does not near with its 2 versions — the fact is other than the narration and the overjoyed ending, there is not Considerable different. But here we have a case where you can gawk what happens to a movie as it goes through development HELL. Gripping stuff, and it comes LOADED with extras.

The only downside is the director’s nick gets the royal treatment of a 5.1 sound mix while the other version gets a 2 channel Dolby mix, and even the video quality seems different with again the director’s cleave looking better than the theatrical release. But at last we can seek a widescreen version of either reduce, and we gain a lot of extras that interpret some of why the movie is the intention it ended up. Blooming images, two favorable soundtracks (I like both though the mood changes), and basically strong performances. Record is a waking dream!

As long as unicorns sail the earth inappropriate can never afflict the pure of heart, and that is why the prince of Darkness has sent his most foulest goblins out into the very daylight he seeks to extinguish forever to lop off the horns of the last two remaining. But when Jack (the forest boy, played by a very young Tom Skim) takes Lily (a royal princess, played by the heavenly Mia Sara) to behold them, she does the forbidden and touches these traditional creatures. Lily soon discovers it was she who unintentionally lured the unicorns into the goblin’s trap; enabling them to shoot the poison stinger into one of the “beasts”, as they call them, with a certain notion. She vows to form things apt again as the land becomes shrouded in a blanket of snow and tries to protect the last unicorn standing but is too venerable to defend even herself. She then is captured, along with the unicorn, and taken help to the ample tree where the inappropriate arrive to sacrifice. There the prince of Darkness yearns for a companion and tries to design Lily one of them by tempting her with jewels and power while Jack and his novel friends Gump, a jealous sprite and some other nymphs, blueprint a idea to achieve Lily, the unicorn, and the world before it’s covered in eternal shadow.

Legend wasn’t too well received in theaters and was not a accepted among most critics but it has snappy become a cult classic with fantasy lovers like me. Considering the obscene budget director Ridley Scott was given in order to earn this film in the mid-80s, I opinion they did a fantastic job in bringing William Hjortsberg’s murky fairytale to life, which was written specifically for the conceal. I also felt the entire cast keep on mighty performances – especially Tim Curry who went through hell (pun intended) to examine as devilish as he does here…

Within this two-disc place is two versions of the film. One is the director’s carve, as it was intended to be seen, and the other is the U.S. theatrical version, which I personally remove, as do many others apparently. There are many extended scenes in the director’s cleave that were taken out of the U.S. release to neat down the overall running time but I felt the U.S. version simply flowed better. It also features a more dramatic get by Jerry Goldsmith instead of the more emotional gain by Tangerine Dream and doesn’t include the closing credits song “Is Your Like Strong Enough? ” by Brian Ferry, ending the movie on a more magical effect. But tranquil, it was nice to stare both versions and to compare the two. There’s also a lot of bonus materials in the slight edition of Sage that many fans will be very grateful for.

The other side of the storystar40 tpng Infamous Discount.
In an incredible bit of misfortune, ‘Infamous’ will have to live with the stigma of being ‘that other movie’ about Truman Capote writing his masterpiece ‘In Cold Blood’. Over time that distinction may begin to wear off, but only time will tell. The trouble with this situation is that it is impossible to see 2006′s ‘Infamous’ without comparing it to 2005′s ‘Capote’ — even if you try. I promised myself that I would attempt to watch it with a fresh perspective, but within ten minutes I had decidedly broken that promise and started a list of differences and similarities in my mind. What is so unfair about this is that while ‘Capote’ is a very good movie, ‘Infamous’ is just a good one, making its faults stand out that much more by comparing it to its predecessor. Never before has being good not been good enough.

Purists undoubtedly take to ‘Capote’ as the superior film and lambaste ‘Infamous’ as a pretender to the throne, but what they are missing out on are the intriguing differences in perspective that the two films have. It is here that ‘Infamous’ earns its merits, but also where its defining flaw comes into play: that it is too afraid to risk making Truman an unsympathetic character. ‘Capote’ gets at the heart of the deviousness inherent in Truman’s dealings with Perry Smith and Dick Hickock (the killers on death row whose stories, along with those of their victims, comprise ‘In Cold Blood’) — how he used and abused their friendship and trust in order to write his masterpiece. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Truman Capote is an egotistical liar that sells his soul for his story, made sympathetic by Hoffman’s careful portrayal and by the fact that his cruelty causes him to spiral into drink, depression, and ruin for the rest of his life. The makers of ‘Infamous’ shy away from this aspect of Capote, choosing to go for sympathy instead. His deceit is only mentioned in passing — with the effect that you wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t looking for it. This Truman really cares for Perry Smith, and the film posits that what ruined him after the executions was the loss of the one person he had ever truly connected with. This Truman is a victim of his book’s conclusion rather than culpable in it. It’s an interesting theory, but it holds less weight and feels toothless. I don’t know enough about the facts to speculate as to whether or not the sexual tension that develops between the writer and the convict is accurate, but it does add an element of intrigue to the story.

The relationship between Truman and Perry in ‘Infamous’ adds a layer to the characterization of the author that was missing from ‘Capote’: that he was really a damaged, insecure man at heart, and had been ever since his childhood. The bravado, the confidance, the wit, and the eloquence that Manhattan’s high society adore him for is a mask that he has put on to hide how he really feels about himself. His entire personality is an affectation, and his carefully maintained social life is artifice. Other reviewers have criticized ‘Infamous’ for being too stylized, but I think that they were trying to show how fake his life in New York was — and in my humble opinion they succeeded. Toby Jones’ portrayal is, as such, less natural than Hoffman’s, but is perfectly suited to this intention of the filmmakers and succeeds in its own right. Had ‘Infamous’ come before ‘Capote’ Jones may have been more recognized for his work with an Oscar nomination of his own, but as I said earlier, timing has not been kind to ‘Infamous’. Anyway, Truman and Perry make a connection because they can be who they really are around each other: Perry can talk about his lonely, abusive childhood and desire to be an artist, while Truman can let his guard down and stop acting like a “wind-up doll” (to use a term from the movie). ‘Capote’ gets at the heart of Truman’s duplicity, but ‘Infamous’ gets at the heart of his insecurity.

The two film’s really work as companion pieces, then, so I would encourage everyone to get over their prejudice and look at the two film’s as two different sides of one of America’s most distinctive voices. It is fitting that a personality as outsized as Truman Capote’s couldn’t be captured by only one film, and he would probably be pleased to know that that is the case.

The story of a broken heart . . .star50 tpng Infamous Discount.
Based on interviews in George Plimpton’s oral biography of Truman Capote, this well done film offers a somewhat different take on the character we’d already come to know through the previous year’s “Capote,” which covers the same storyline – the writing of the author’s bestseller, “In Cold Blood.” Toby Jones gives a notable performance that emphasizes Capote’s vulnerability – reinforced by the actor’s diminutive size – compared to the more arch and self-centered Oscar-winning portrayal turned in by Philip Seymour Hoffman. While both films show how Capote is overwhelmed by the stress of composing this landmark book and waiting for its publication as the two killers are held for years on death row, “Infamous” wants us to believe that Capote fell deeply in love with one of them, Perry, who returned his affection and regarded him to the end as “Friend Truman.” That Capote never wrote anything of the caliber of “In Cold Blood” again and spent the rest of his years in a downward spiral of self destruction is used in the film as evidence that it was the fateful encounter with Perry that ruined him.

Sandra Bullock gives a wonderfully controlled performance as Capote’s lifelong friend Harper Lee, who after the success of “To Kill a Mockingbird” never published another novel and left New York to return to her childhood home in Alabama, where fate provided a much more congenial retreat from the limelight. “Who knows what the heart wants,” she remarks sadly at the end of the film, “and who can defend themselves against it?” And while the film treats its subject with a certain playfulness, reflected in a mostly cheerful and larky soundtrack, it is finally the story of a broken heart. The DVD has a very cogent and informative commentary by writer-director Douglas McGrath. Definitely worth watching, even if you’ve seen “Capote.” Side by side, they demonstrate nicely Capote’s own vision of truth as it’s found in creative nonfiction.

worth seeing firststar50 tpng Infamous Discount.
Probably the best order in which to view the films on this subject is this version first, then last year’s, then the Robert Blake movie.

If CAPOTE is a sophisticatedly sec pinot grigio, INFAMOUS is a heartier, fruitier wine. The power of CAPOTE is its restraint, with the complex central character both monstrous and sympathetic in his cool-eyed pragmatism about needing the killers to die in order to complete his book successfully. INFAMOUS suggests that Capote is more emotionally torn by this conflict of interests between his attraction to Perry Smith and his ego as a writer. There’s more wallop throughout the more indulgent film, but CAPOTE’s refusal to provide easier emotional releases makes it the more mature work. That said, I’d be more apt to replay this version.

The opening scene, in which Gwyneth Paltrow struggles through the pain behind the lyric she’s singing, sets the overall approach of this film. It is dramatically effective, it’s well-played, and it telegraphs both the theme and the somewhat manipulative means this movie will rely upon. Similarly, the sexual relationship alleged in the prison sequences is carried off by excellent performances, is graphic as fantasy rather than likelihood, and distinguishes CAPOTE’s restraint as probably a more honest narrative choice.

The acting and period design are excellent–making favorable comparisons to similar ambitions of the period piece on George Reeves’ suicide. Audiences will appreciate INFAMOUS more if they’re aware of the history of Capote’s ANSWERED PRAYERS, the gossip fest that exposed the secrets of all his socialite “swans” and thus cost him their friendships.

It’s interesting that, in all three versions of this existential saga of meaningless virtue and shallow sophisticates, the Perry Smith performance particularly shines. In this instance, Craig all but steals the film as a Tommy Lee Jones-like hunk, though it must be noted that Segourney Weaver is fantastic at the Twist.

The murders at the eye of this maelstrom are depicted in all three versions of the story, and they remain chilling in each instance. (My companion at INFAMOUS was enraged, not having seen CAPOTE, that INFAMOUS treated such brutal killers so sympathetically–in Perry’s case, as a romantic fantasy–but she acknowledged that this film is excellent.) Based on the treatments of that central event, I’d recommend seeing the lighter (but not lite) INFAMOUS first, followed by the ascetically satisfying CAPOTE, and then the 1967 Richard Brooks original on the subject. The reverse order would not do INFAMOUS, well, “justice.”

A fascination with influence may plot you to this documentary of art appreciation. Through this stir into the life of Henry Geldzahler we look the depths of the friendship between Henry and Andy Warhol and how at the height of their friendship they talked on the phone daily. It seemed they supported each other’s artistic visions.

Henry Geldzahler loved to be photographed, was a natural in front of a camera and also loved to sit for portraits. David Hockney’s painting of Henry sitting on a couch is shown in reality and then as the painting. These types of contrasts display reality vs. the artist’s vision and perhaps interpret “in a subtle contrivance” how Henry’s presence changed the world of art.

Since I had impartial arrived in the world in the 60s, this is all pleasing mighty recent to me and it helps to elaborate the rise of contemporary art in a distinct contrivance. It is likely that you will spy very few artists featured if you are under 40 and not an art student, but this doesn’t detract from the human-interest fable.

Artists interviewed include: Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, David Hockney, John Chamberlain, Francesco Clemente, Designate di Suvero, Ellsworth Kelly, Larry Poons and James Rosenquist. This gives a piquant inside plan of what was happening in the art world during the 60s.

After viewing this DVD, you can’t encourage but peer the influence of the artists featured while visiting today’s art museums.

~The Rebecca Review

Henry Geldzahler came from a well-to-do family and always wanted to be a curator. After interning at the Whitney at 15 he fell in like with fresh art. He got a degree from Yale and after a couple of years of doctoral studies at Harvard he approved a place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was hardly known for its serve of the latest directions in art.

This movie is about Geldzahler and what he did to benefit the pop art movement that included artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, and many others. The anecdote is told with tapes and films of Geldzahler, as well as period and contemporary interviews with the artists concerned (whether supportive or contrary to the movement) .

The culmination of the film is the celebrated and hugely controversial exhibit Geldzahler set aside on in 1970 at the Metropolitan. “Recent York Painting 1940-1970″. It was a blockbuster and unexcited resonates to this day. I loved the comment about how he selected what to save in the prove (because no matter how colossal an exhibition, so mighty had to be left out) . Geldzahler said that he picked those works that he had seen and than left him wanting to gape it again. Whatever you mediate about the “seriousness” or “worth” of the art, great of it is certainly shapely and all of it is paunchy of cheer, optimism, fun, and some downright silliness. Isn’t that refreshing from being dour all the time?

Henry Geldzahler died far too young at 59 in 1994. We even acquire to study inside his home and the delicate objects with which he had surrounded himself. They are gorgeous.

This is a glowing short film to salvage some background about this engrossing and influential patron on current art and the artists who did all that work. It is quite charmingly done and never gets sidetracked in the side arguments.

It is said that the role of Peter Venkman was originally written for John Belushi, but we’ll never know how he would have performed in the role. Fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Murray stepped into the role and ran away with the movie. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd fit into the anecdote like a glove in Ivan Reitman’s masterpiece, but Bill Murray steals his every scene – which means most of the movie – with a performance pudgy of dead-pan, ironic, world-weary, been-there-done-that hilariousness.

He has a sarcastic allege for every occasion, and the audience is the only one in on the joke every time.

When prospective girlfriend Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver, who gets a plum opportunity to exhibit off her comedic skills) gets possessed by an substandard demon, she is transformed into a slinky seductress. Bill Murray has approach over to her apartment and in his hilarious dead-pan manner lets the audience know that he recognizes all is not normal with Ms. Barrett. As hilarious and sarcastic as Venkman is, he’s at least a gentleman of sorts and doesn’t hold advantage of the position when the demon tries to seduce him.

“Do you want this body? ” Sigourney-demon asks him.

The special effects don’t study like the CGI visions that have been on conceal for a couple of years (this was 1984) yet they’re piece of the fun. Even so, the special effects abet the sage rather than up-staging it, and when the movie was initially released I remember howling with the audience after the first special-effect ghost “attacks” Bill Murray and leaves him on the floor in a glistening mess.

“He SLIMED me!” Venkman yelled, and we laughed our heads off.

This disc is not dated by contemporary references – it’s impartial as hilarious today as it was in 1984, and it’ll probably be impartial as droll 100 years from now. The DVD comes with extras that add to the fun, and in the commentary tracks Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis present that “Ghostbusters” was an absolute highlight in all of their lives.

Mine too.

I have grown up with “Ghostbusters”, and was a fan of the cartoon series, the toys, and of course, the movies. I calm am, and unfortunately, I wasn’t all that delighted with Criterion’s laserdisc release of the film. The portray contained a lot of noise, and the matte lines were so visible, that even director Ivan Reitman was upset about it. That’s not the case here. With the release of “Ghostbusters” on DVD, digitally remastered and crammed to the gills with extras, including a live video commentary with Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis that looks great like “Mystery Science Theater 3000″, this makes the purpose of the invention of a DVD player positive! This DVD is righteous! It has everything I hoped for! They(Columbia/Tristar) really outdid themselves with this DVD. It includes numerous documentaries(instead of the usual 1 or 2), production photos, sketch artist drawings, and deleted scenes. Commenting on the deleted scenes, one of them was very exclusive, in which Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray play street bums instead of Venkman and Stantz, with Bill Murray doing his “Caddyshack” riff. It’s astounding that the cameras rolled for it, but it’s there. The only thing missing was the inclusion of a scene that found it’s procedure into the Criterion laserdisc, which followed the three ghostbusters leaving the college and Venkman commenting on how “he’s gonna gather the nobel prize”. Smooth, it also becomes intuitively definite why those scenes were sever once you view them. Anyway, if you have a DVD player and do not have this DVD, you are really missing out. It’s hard to contemplate why anyone would not want to add the “Ghostbusters” DVD to their collection. If you don’t like it, your as unimaginative as those ghosts running around.

I’m a big fan of The Sunless Crystal (it and Labyrinth are my favourite movies of all time ever) so I was of course thrilled when a special collector’s edition was released. However, I’m disappointed in the “features”.

Pretty distinguished everything on the disc is the same as what’s on the non-collector’s edition. The few novel things to me aren’t worth it. Character Illustrations and storyboards are nice and all. I was angry about “The Mithra Treatment”, which I plan was the unique print of the movie…where the characters narrate their absorb language and not English (you notice some of this in the deleted scenes on the disc) . It is not. It is simply screens and screens of Henson’s new notes. Inviting yes… but I’d rather have that in a booklet, not in screens on my TV. Then again, the fact that it was only 1 disc should have tipped me off.

The packaging is nice, the replica of Henson’s notepad detailing the current ideas which would become the movie is very intelligent… but in my notion, not worth the $35 or whatever I objective shelled out for this.

I’m very disappointed in the amount of “exclusives” on this DVD. The unique print of the film would have been *amazing* to survey, to seek how Henson and Co. originally viewed the film. Maybe some unique interviews with some of the other players (Oz and Froud for positive) as they peruse befriend on the movie, its box office disappointment but almost cult success. Or even a nifty booklet with a lot of these extras in it. I disapprove sitting in front of my TV trying to read screens of information or examine at drawings which I’d rather have on paper so I can study the detail better.

So to compose a long chronicle short… if you like the movie, obtain the regular edition and not collector’s. If you’re a fanatic like me, bought the re-issued World of the Shadowy Crystal book and even considered shelling out a few hundred for the fresh pressing… and somehow MISSED buying the first DVD release of this movie, well then this is probably for you. But if you already gain the DVD that came out a few years ago… I’d contemplate very heavily on it, unless you are a fanatic. Even as a fanatic, you probably won’t rep any original material here (especially if you believe the aforementioned book), and I’d effect the $35. Or try to recoup some of your “loss” and sell your other DVD somewhere (like I’m going to try and do) . I hope that if Henson and Co. choose to do a Collector’s Edition of Labyrinth they achieve a minute more work into it. I have to say, I’m disappointed with how the kids have carried on Jim’s tale.

This movie is Jim Henson’s magnum opus. There isn’t a fantasy movie out there that brings you to a whole different reality like The Shadowy Crystal does. Yes the movie is all performed entirely by puppets and yes there isn’t a human being in state. That’s the beauty of it. With a combination of an advantageous record, innovative (for its time) animatronics, aesthetic sets and cinematography you catch a truly heavenly experience that any fantasy fan would be a fool not to miss.

The biggest aspect of Shaded Crystal is the setting. They created a whole different world with its acquire animals, plants and terrain. The level of detail achieve into creating this unusual world is staggering and you rep some superb scenes to soak yourself up in it. From the rock caves of the Mystics to the jagged spires of the Skesis castle to Aughra’s planetarium to every landscape in between. You will find drawn into this alien world. The beauty of the sets and set shots is only enhanced with some extraordinary cinematography and faded effects.

Since we are essentially talking about a puppet indicate brought to you as a feature film let’s talk about the puppets. Granted they might seem a bit stale by today’s standards, they were nothing short of fantastic relieve in 1982. To have puppets act and react in such an organic and lifelike fashion was never done on film before. This is the first movie where you derive that sort of study and mouth movements we have advance so extinct to with original animatronics. Well-known artist Brian Froud created all of the creatures and characters for Dim Crystal and if you’re a fan of his work you will definitely glance it. When you peek at the majesty of the Mystics you forget they are objective people covered in foam latex.

Of course having a truly creative setting and truly creative characters would not be enough to originate a tremendous movie. Lord knows fantasy fans have seen plenty of examples that demonstrate that point. However this movie has a tale that is as classic as any story you have read before. By the time you achieve this movie if will feel like you objective read a huge fairy yarn… only about wondrous and improbable creatures never seen before. It’s not deep storytelling. Then again it shouldn’t be considering the mythical theme.

The unique release of this DVD had a host of improbable extras that made it the only DVD you would ever need… UNTIL NOW! This DVD has everything that made the fresh release mountainous plus a salubrious deal more. Here’s what you get:

REFLECTIONS OF THE Sunless CRYSTAL – Two-part featurette (Shard of Illusion [16 minutes] and Light on the Path of Creation [20 minutes]) with more novel interviews from writers, directors, and performers including co-writer David O’Dell, conceptual designer Brian Froud, and Jim Henson’s son Brian. These featurettes also include newly discovered test footage from Jim Henson’s home in England.

WORLD OF THE Shaded CRYSTAL – The most extraordinary “making of” documentary one can ever ask for. It details over an hour of footage regarding conceptual make, character creation, production, cinematography, the philosophy gradual the creation of this movie and the world it is based on, and more. This documentary was made while the Dim Crystal was released so you secure interviews with the man himself, Jim Henson at the time of the movie along with scores of others eager in the movie. Most “making of” documentaries that advance out with movies these days are small more than lip service to succor promote the movie. I wish they would follow the model done on THIS documentary.

WORK PRINT SCENES – The novel belief of The Murky Crystal was to have many of the creatures express their enjoy language, which we would gather subtitles for, in order to further attach in that different world. I mediate that would have been a frigid intention to gape the movie and with this footage you obtain an conception of Jim Henson’s novel understanding. Sustain in mind this is not fully produced footage and it’s not the same as seeing the waste product. Namely the character Augra is being dubbed with Frank Oz’s Miss Piggy-esque disclose over and of course there is no music or post-production. Unexcited it’s engrossing to come by a taste of what the movie could have been like.

DELETED SCENE – Impartial one deleted scene, which was the Skeksis funeral. You’re really not missing grand taking it out if you ask me. The funeral itself is stupid. The scene has some footwate with Jen talking to one of the Mystics about his quest, which was nice. No remastering on the scene of course. It’s radiant grainy.

Top all of that off with a newly remastered high definition print, dolby digital sound and an audio commentary by Brian Froud and you have the fresh winner on which is the definitive Dismal Crystal DVD. The dissimilarity in video quality is almost night and day. The previous DVDs were grainy and the colors weren’t as vibrant. The remastering does these movies a lot of justice in cleaning up the characterize and breathing fresh life in a 25+ year venerable movie.

Something I noticed on the audio. The unusual disk had a Spanish dub track in mono, but this version doesn’t. It does, however have a Japanese 5.1 dolby track while the unusual didn’t. There is also no Spanish subtitles (something I get unusual considering how easy it would be to add) . I yell the spanish speaking Dusky Crystal fans may be set off from this.

This is the version of the movie to score… until gradual September. Gracious News!! The Shadowy Crystal will be out on high definition Blu-Ray!! It will have all the same features as this DVD plus an unfamiliar describe in describe featurette (I consider it’s a storyboard comparison), and two games: The Book of Thra (win artifacts from the movie and notion your collection) and SkekTek’s Crystal Challenge (all I know is it’s a game in narrate) . Hopefully the transfer to Blu-Ray doesn’t catch out too considerable of the unusual film grain like many of these transfers of older movies do. I will record more on the Blu-Ray details when I regain them.

I will admit that some people might be assign off of this movie due to the lack of human actors in front of you and the fact the puppet animatronics might feel dated. It’s a shame people would feel that procedure because The Unlit Crystal is fantasy storytelling at its finest. If you are a fan of the genre this movie is an absolute must. If you’re a Muppet fan… well these aren’t Muppets so don’t query Fraggle Rock when you examine it. Any fan of mammoth storytelling who wants to be whisked away to a odd faraway land will derive what they are looking for in The Black Crystal. Do yourself a favor and check this movie out.

In 1939 when this movie was released, it faced stiff competition at the Academy Awards from ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Nominated for an Academy Award in 1939, it didn’t bag. But those who care for this film will always have that is should have. By 1939, the Fleischer Studios had been crafting the finest animation around — they actually produced the first rotund length racy movie (though Disney gets the credit) . This is the very best that the Fleischer Studios ever produced. Its characters are every bit as rich and deep as the very best Disney, Bluth or Spielberg-Katzenberg efforts. (Anyone who hears the classic line: “There’s a giant on the beach!” — will never forget it!) For years, I have wanted to find my hands on this and remaster this movie digitally. (I do effects and compositing for a living.) It’s fantastic to examine that someone who loves this movie has given it the care and respect it deserves. Max Fleischer was a sheer genius, whose work includes the recent Betty Boop, Popeye, the enthralling Superman — and his bear contributions to film include techniques of effects production that are unexcited obsolete today. He was a master of his craft who, sadly, has exiguous recognition outside artists and animators. I have bought many copies of this over the years — usually in versions so poorly recorded and transfered that they are pitiful indicators of the Fleischer talent — and yet, everyone I’ve given it to, loves the movie. My personal gratitude to Winfield Hoskins, Seymour Kneitel and Thomas Reich for your tender care in restoring such a improbable movie. Thank you. It is truly long overdue and it is a case of giving honor to whom honor is due. This belongs accurate alongside the best Disney, tucked legal on the shelf alongside Bluth’s best — and when the young and the young at heart ask “What is this? ” — play it. My big daugther plays it regularly and never tires of it and always quites “There’s a giant on the beach” — and she laughs. This movie is simply pure magic — breathtaking! Many of you will leer it and will suddenly remember seeing this long ago and your eyes will light up, objective as many who I have bought it for, have said to me: “I saw this years ago and have never known what it was. I adore this!” And they always smile. And I always assume more copies. The soul of a factual artist lives in this movie. And this is the best edition of it that you will collect. Assume it…

First let me say that I am not a broad fan of Winstar products, but they have done the restoration job on this title that they promised. The 60th Anniversary Edition image is so arresting and pure that I got rid of my Republic Laserdisc that came from their studio masters. As typical with Winstar, they created a fresh stereo soundtrack, but THEY HAVE INCLUDED THE New MONO TRACK! I would suggest selecting the unique mono track, their stereo track is distracting.
