Rowan Atkinson was comical as Mr. Bean, but he was downright hilarious as the Dusky Adder. He had such a talent for playing the sharp-tongued rogue I’ll never figure out why he decided to initiate doing comedy in which he hardly spoke. The premise of this British comedy series is that the central character, “The Dark Adder”, shows up at different points in history in various incarnations distorting historical events and poking fun at various British historical figures and situations along the diagram.

Lots of people don’t like Sad Adder I, in which the title character, Edmund, is the younger son of a brutish man consumed with thoughts of war who actually becomes king of England through Edmund’s gain bungling – he arrives slow for the Battle of Bosworth Field and winds up chopping off the head of Richard III, thus saving the life of Henry Tudor. Throughout this first season he plays the buffoon, often having the expression of a deer caught in the headlights. This is the only season in which the Unlit Adder takes on the persona of a ancient effeminate person. Especially comic is Edmund’s mother who is a righteous ample woman sitting around doing embroidery and indifferently waiting for the next marauding army to pass through.
The second season takes location early during the reign of Elizabeth I, with the Dim Adder confident, shapely, and even a accepted at court. A young Amanda Richardson plays the role of Elizabeth I, who comes across as Betty Boop, unbiased not as radiant. Although more cunning in this season, Gloomy Adder peaceful comes up the loser in unbiased about every episode. My well-liked is “Bells”, in which Blackadder finds his original servant, Bob, curiously generous company. Terrorized for his reputation at court, Blackadder searches for a “cure” – which of course involves leeches, until Bob conveniently reveals that she is in fact a girl called Kate. Their wedding is disrupted by the profane Lord Flashheart, who, although he is the best man, winds up stealing the bride.

The third season takes location in the eighteenth century during the reign of George III, and will be a popular of all fans of “House, M.D.” due to the presence of a young Hugh Laurie. Here, Dim Adder plays the manservant of the Prince Regent, George, played by Hugh Laurie. George is the dim-witted target of Dark Adder’s many schemes to enrich himself by taking advantage of his cushy situation in George’s household, and this often means having to attach the Prince Regent’s pension and plot in the kingdom, which is largely controlled by Parliament.
The fourth season takes position during World War I, with Edmund Blackadder as a captain in the British army whose company is trapped in one of the trenches that gave everyone in Europe such a distaste for warfare between the two world wars. Blackadder’s aim in this season is to cease alive by staying in that trench until the war ends. His stunts include shooting a carrier pigeon when it arrives with orders to near, and joining the Royal Flying Corp – “the twenty minuters”. Unfortunately, the name comes from how long they are expected to live once in the air, not how remarkable time they work each day, as Blackadder had originally view.
This exhibit has several sharp situation devices. First, most of the main characters present up in different periods of time with the same name but different roles. Hugh Laurie is always “George”, Tony Robinson is always “Baldrick”, Stephen Fry is always “Melchett”, and Tim McInnerny is always “Percy”. Since each season was shot in alternate years – (1983, 1985, 1987, 1989) – the cast must have been having a terrific time in order for them to be regathered after such long intervals in order to execute filming this series possible. Secondly, everyone in the cast, including the Dusky Adder, always dies in the final episode of each season. It is somewhat like the South Park stunt of Kenny being killed at the ruin of every reveal only to reappear in the next episode as though nothing had happened.
Do tag that there are only six episodes per season. If you liked “Red Dwarf” or “Fawlty Towers”, you’ll probably like this series too.
As for extra features, disc five contains the specials. The Cavalier Years has Stephen Fry as King Charles and Warren Clarke as Oliver Cromwell. There is also Blackadder’s Christmas Carol and Succor and Forth. Christmas Carol is handsome comical, but I’ve never cared for Benefit and Forth.
Disc six contains the documentary Blackadder Rides Again, a 90-minute special with the behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage from the fourth season included. There’s also a stare assist at the costumes archaic in Costumes Revisited, along with extended interviews and audio commentaries with the key actors. As for the audio commentaries, Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Ben Elton, Richard Curtis, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny and producer John Lloyd have all contributed to these.
You have to give the Blackadder family credit — they’re tenacious. “Shadowy Adder – The Complete Collector’s Area” chronicles this unusual, sardonic family’s presence throughout the greatest eras of British history. The first season stumbles somewhat, but the following seasons are intellectual — sardonic, kooky, and sometimes rather sick.
On the day of the Battle of Bosworth Field, the Duke of York (Brian Blessed) and his son Harry (Robert East) accompanied the king (Peter Cook) into battle. His second son Edmund (Atkinson) hopes to reach along, but he oversleeps — and when he arrives, he accidentally kills the king, and Edmund’s his father is made king. He dubs himself the “Dusky Adder” and decides to one day become king of England… too awful nobody likes him.
He’s followed by a string of descendents through the ages — all more acid-tongued and vivid than he, or anyone else around them. And they’re always accompanied by a Baldrick. That includes Lord Edmund Blackadder, the approved of the demented queen Bess (Miranda Richardson) ; Edmund Blackadder Esq., valet and butler to the half-witted Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie) ; and Captain Blackadder, a soldier in World War I who spends his time trying to collect out of it.
These unlucky Blackadders glean themselves dealing with demented Puritans, hosting bawdy drinking parties, crazed bishops, even crazier princes, giant turnips, the Red Baron, inch musical acts, Spaniard inquisitors, and almost being shot for eating a carrier pigeon. Startlingly, the final season — although another is in the planning stages — ends on a very poignant brand.
But there is an upbeat ending overall — the final episode introduces us to the modern-day Blackadder, a sharp-tongued aristocrat dining with the modern-day descendents of Prince George, Queen Elizabeth, Melchett and Darling. Not to mention Baldrick in a truly horrifying porno apron.
Blackadder reveals that using da Vinci’s plans, Baldrick has constructed a time machine, and bets £30,000 that he can bring relieve historical items. It’s actually an interpret scam… until the machine works, and Baldrick and Blackadder net themselves spinning helplessly through time, with no view how to gather home. And in a couple of side-stories, Ebenezer Blackadder discovers how his salubrious cheery attitude will affect his descendents; and the last two Loyalists to King Charles (in other words, Baldrick and Blackadder) deal with the impending execution of the king ( “No, it’s not! It’s a expansive pumpkin with a pathetic moustache drawn on it!”) .
The series starts off a puny weakly — the first season is comical, but not outrageously so, and Prince Edmund is the incompetant twerp rather than Baldrick or Percy. But things blossom with the arrival of a fresh writer in “Blackadder II,” and sets the tone for the rest of the series: a gleaming, bitter man who’s constantly surrounded by nincompoops.
There are one or two dud episodes, but the majority of them shine with comical genius, from the kookily childish Queen Elizabeth (“Who’s Queen? “) to Baldrick’s rancid boxers killing the dinosaurs. Atkinson gets most of the respectable lines (“He’s the most over-rated human being since Judas Iscariot won the AD31 Best Disciple Competition”) but the rest of the cast usually gets in some tremendous ones too (“A total pig-headed unwillingness to recognize facts in the face will witness us through!”) .
Atkinson, of course, rules the whole series a series of acid-tongued Blackadders who have influence but no power, and Robinson is gargantuan as the spoiled servant who always has a cunning understanding. The rest of the cast reappears regularly — Laurie as a series of half-witted bluebloods, Richardson as drippy young women, Fry as cunning advisors and hearty generals, and McInnery as airbrained idiots and prissy assistants.
Aside from being polished up in the remastering process, apparently this edition is going to have deleted scenes, audio commentaries (YAY!) and interviews. It’s probably not worth the shell-out if you already enjoy the whole thing, but definitely is if you don’t.
The complete series of “Unlit Adder” is a humorous cornucopia — it starts off a bit weakly, but once it gets its footing, it’s absolute hilarious. A must-have.

You could call him the unexcited one. McQueen had a talent for portraying quite a lot with minimal dialog and that’s the arrangement he liked it. He has maybe 75 lines off dialog in “The Radiant Seven” yet his presence is equal to that of star Yul Brynner. You’d be forgiven for being confused about which Steve McQueen boxed region to hold. MGM has recently released “The Steve McQueen Collection” which features four McQueen classics that have previously been available on DVD; “The Thomas Crown Affair”, “The Blooming Seven”, “Junior Bonner” and “The Large Hurry”.

“The Indispensable Steve McQueen Collection” is a different beast entirely; it does feature 1 title that is no different than the previously issued version -”Papillon”. All the rest have either never been issued or, in the case of “Bullitt”, are now in two disc deluxe editions that accomplish this region a worthwhile addition to any collection.
The crown jewel of this place is the original deluxe edition of “Bullitt”. McQueen plays San Francisco detective Frank Bullitt. He’s been assigned to protect a peep for a major trial. The stare, though, is murdered. Before the post-mortem has begun, Bullitt hunts for the killers and plans on nailing them. Featuring an unbelievable high urge hurry through the streets of San Francisco and shot entirely on site, “Bullitt” was Peter Yates’ first major US film and it crackles with energy.

“Papillon” tells the narrative of a thief nick-named Papillon for the spacious butterfly tattooed on his chest. (McQueen) framed for cancel in France and sent to Devil’s Island for life. From the moment he steps on the boat headed to the prison he’s planning his dash. He agrees to protect a financial thief Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman) . Schaffner’s film portrays Papillon’s attempt to survive on Devil’s Island until he can figure out an run concept. Although this isn’t Schaffner’s best film, it has a number of distinguished moments that equal his classic films “Patton”, “Planet of the Apes” and “The War Lord”. McQueen more than holds his enjoy with draw actor Hoffman.
“The Cincinnati Kid” features McQueen as Eric Stoner a go playing ace who challenges the best gambler around “the Man” Lancey Howard (Edward G. Robinson) . A terrific performance by Edward G. Although it’s not one of director John Sturges (“The Pleasing Seven”. “Ice Residence Zebra”) best films, “Never So Few” provides McQueen with a role that continued his breakthrough as a actor. It also inspired Sturges to cast McQueen in “The Glorious Seven”.
“The Getaway” almost got away without being made. Originally Peter Bogdanovich was to announce with his girlfriend actress Cybil Shepherd in the lead. When she dropped out so did Bogdanovich. Luckily director Sam Peckinpah stepped in and the rewritten script by Walter Hill was tooled for McQueen. Scandal broke out on the plot when McQueen became fervent with his co-star Ali McGraw (who was then married to Paramount head Robert Evans) . McQueen plays thief Doc McCoy who has been paroled. The only scrape is that Sheriff Beynon (Ben Johnson) expects him to do a mammoth robbery for him. He plans on killing McCoy afterward but things don’t quite work out the plan that Beynon intended.
“Tom Horn” (McQueen) a tracker and “enforcer” who dispensed justice in the old-fashioned west takes a job to cessation cattle thieves. When things bag messy and Horn has to waste some of the rustlers, the ranchers who hired him want Horn stopped. He’s effect on trial for the abolish of a 15 year veteran boy. The next to last film McQueen made before he died in 1980, is a surprisingly remarkable and immense western. The screenplay by novelist/screenwriter Thomas McGuane (“The Missouri Breaks”, “92 in the Shade”, “Rancho Deluxe”) and Bub Shrake (“Nightwing”, “J.W. Coop”, “Songwriter”) portrays a character out of time; Horn’s style of dispensing justice faces the gray world of corruption and politics. McQueen gives one of his best nuanced performances in a film that didn’t do all that well at the box office. It’s a pity as it’s a enormous movie that deserves a wider audience. Luckily, for those who purchase the boxed dwelling they’ll finally regain a chance to witness this classic western.
The previous DVD edition of “Bullitt” looked quite suitable but can’t compare to the newly digitally remastered transfer here. Image clarity, color and detail for “Bullitt” is wonderful. The sound is surprisingly spry with a nice 5.1 remix that doesn’t quite consume the format to its best advantage but that’s not a surprise given that the film is nearly 40 years passe. “Papillon” comes with the same transfer as it received in 2000. Image quality is expedient but the negative could employ restoration and/or digital filtering to well-organized up the print/improve it. It does feature a unusual 5.1 remix (which wasn’t advertised on the box of the previous release and I don’t pick if it had it or not on the 1999 release but I suspect not) .The colors aren’t intellectual and vibrant but they fit the general atmosphere of the film and are fairly fair to the modern theatrical exhibition if a bit veteran. “The Getaway” looks terrific again considering the age of the movie. The blacks are rock solid and the colors as shimmering and shining as they’ve ever been. There’s the occasionally soft image but, on the whole, “The Getaway” looks pleasant. “Never So Few” also looks quite genuine particularly when you deem the age of the negative. It receives a solid transfer with luminous colors and nice image clarity. “The Cincinnati Kid” also looks exceptionally gracious with nice color reproduction and image quality. It’s positive that some digital restoration was done to the most unusual releases here and “Kid” does support from it. “Tom Horn” looks extremely helpful with bewitching images, shimmering and quick-witted colors. Although a tad grainy (like most of the films here) that has more to do with the stock feeble to shoot the films and the condition of the negative than the transfer. In most cases, the graininess adds to the character of the films. All six films feature 2.0 Dolby Digital Surround soundtracks (in addition to the 5.1 remasters for “Papillon”) . All sound crisp with nice clarity to the dialog and music.
“Bullitt” gets the most attention here. Featuring two splendid documentaries on the film and McQueen, we also procure the unusual vintage featurette on the film. “The Cutting Edge” examines the the art of movie editing with a gape into other films during the editing process as well. “Steve McQueen: The Essence of Icy” is a terrific biography on McQueen that provides a lot of information previously unknown about the actor. There’s also the unusual theatrical trailer included as well. “The Getaway” features the unusual theatrical trailer only. “Papillon” has the fresh promotional featurette produced for the film as fragment of the extras as well as the trailer. “The Cincinnati Kid”, “Never So Few” and “Tom Horn” all have only the novel theatrical trailer for the respective films. It’s a pity that Warner chose not to do a documentary or at the very least a featurette on “Tom Horn”. Since it’s about a exact historical figure and making the film was a passion for McQueen, it would have been appropriate and provided distinguished needed information on the historical figure and the production of this blooming overlooked film.
“Bullitt” comes with an honorable commentary by director Peter Yates. “The Getaway” features a “virtual” commentary culled from interviews of McQueen, Peckinpah and McGraw as well as a commentary by Peckinpah biographers/documentarians Cleave Redman, Paul Seydor, Garner Simmons and David Weddle. “The Cincinnati Kid” has a satisfactory trivia filled commentary track by director Norman Jewison.
Between this release and “The Steve McQueen Collection”, McQueen fans will have most of his important films. Although there are a few gems missing from these collections (due to contractual issues no doubt), most of the films here are among the best McQueen made. “The Getaway” and “Bullitt” receive most of the attention here with terrific commentary tracks and extras. “Papillon” probably could have former a face engage with a fresh digital transfer and a commentary track by a film historian (or Dustin Hoffman) but it looks like we’ll have to wait for this minor classic to gather its due another time. The other missed opportunity in this worthy position is the lack of extras for “Tom Horn” One of McQueen’s finest later films and a terrific western that presaged films like “The Unforgiven”, “Inaugurate Range” and “Wyatt Earp”, it’s a perfect period portion about the transition of the broken-down west into civilization and those who were lost along the device.
If anyone deserves a box location it’s Seve McQueen. The greatest of the Hollywood “Mans Man”. McQueen made some colossal movies for Warner Brothers as he did for MGM before them, and we are lucky to salvage the unbelievable Warner Brothers DVD treatment that they have bestowed on their modern box position.
While The Astronomical Run is my personal popular McQueen film I am joyful to look BULLIT, and NEVER SO FEW in the same location. It’s glowing humorous seeing a movie not starring Steve McQueen in his box region. Never so few was a staring vehicle for Frank Sinatra, but because of his scene stealing co-star Sinatra went on recount as calling NEVER SO FEW a McQueen film. It also had a gigantic Director John Sturges who also made THE Pretty SEVEN, and THE Titanic Dash with McQueen.
PAPILLON, THE GETAWAY, THE CINCINATTI KID, and the very underated TOM HORN are also included in the awesome box spot. I was not yet born when Steve McQueen passed away, but I can affirm you this, I have not been on the planet for more than twenty three years, but I can safely say that there has not been a actor/stuntman cooler than Steve McQueen.

Arnold Schwartzenegger in the role of humorless, ultra-disciplined Soviet police-captain Vanya Danko, teamed with Chicago PD screw-up Art Ritsek (Jim Belushi), to track a Georgean drug kingpin… this is one of Arnold’s greatest, but least-appreciated, action-films. The best scenes win residence in Russia, in the banya (public bath), over the rooftops around Red Square, in the mafiya cafe. Arnold’s Russian, spoken with his Austrian accent, is resplendent terrific! What impressed me was the film’s stop attention to detail: Even Danko’s handwriting and numbers were authentically Russian-style. The machismo of the personal battle between Ivan Danko and the smuggler was intensely Russian, as was Danko’s unswerving conviction of Soviet superiority. His terse correction of the hotel clerk’s ask “Is [Viktor] another Russian, like you? ” Danko: “Soviet.”, is right-on — Georgeans are not Russians, although many Americans don’t know that. The scripting of a Georgean as the loathesome criminal is actually quite revealing, and surely a reflection of the film’s “official” Russian input . Despite the grimness of the residence and Arnold’s character, there is plenty of gloomy humor, mainly provided by Belushi’s portrayal of undisciplined officer Ritsek. The humor frequently contrasts the strictly indoctrinated Soviet structure with the (to Danko) near-anarchy of American freedom. Noteworthy of the mayhem and carnage wrought during the process of Danko’s personal war defies credibility; as Ritsek puts it: “Why aren’t there any cops around when you need one!” The action genre’s obligatory high-speed slither scene was ludicrous, yet appropriately Russian (everything Russian always seems so mighty “bigger”…) . And the protagonists’ exchange in the kill, in which Vanya gets the better deal, is also typically Russian — and proves that Danko is not so humorless after all. By the intention, this movie (like all of Arnold’s action-films) is extremely current here, where it has been dubbed into the Russian language. Ironically, in the russkiy version, all the obscenities have been deleted from the dialogue.
Schwarzenegger and James Belushi obtain a expansive team in this crazed action film. Schwarzenegger plays the serious Captain Ivan Danko, a Russian detective. Opposite him, James Belushi, is the laughable cop, Art Ridzik, always splendid for a laugh. Who could guess what would happen when these two got stuck together?
On the downside of the film the beggining is all Russian. You’ll be forced to read English subtitles not able to savor any of the visuals, until around ten to twenty minutes into the film. Unless of course you grunt Russian.
The final word. If you’re looking for something to do on a tiresome afternoon, I recommend sitting encourage and enjoying Red Heat.

The Unrated Versions
Here are the unrated versions of all of the Riddick tales. We get Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, a short animated film. But will all of the movies and all of the extras, we are still missing the half-hour promotion feature where we see Riddick’s past. Originally he was a government assassin who was trained a bit too well. When the government was done with him they tried to eliminate him. Riddick survived and trumped up charges were invented sending him on the run. But that original story is missing from this collection.
Pitch Black. Riddick is one of a handful of survivors who crash on a bright and arid world. But once in a while, the three suns are completely blocked and true darkness covers the land. It is in this darkness that the remaining life on the planet comes out of hiding and goes hunting. Riddick must fight the dark, hold tr group together, and somehow escape the planet.
Dark Fury. Having escaped at the end of the first movie, Riddick and company are picked up by a bounty hunter who has a different idea of what to do with dangerous men. Now Riddick is faced with killers, monsters, and a captain who seems to worship the skill of killing and survival. This film is short and animated but uses the voices of actors from the other movies.
The Chronicles of Riddick. Here old acquaintances try to enlist Riddick’s help in stopping a force known as the Necromongers. It is their sworn duty to purge the flawed life of our universe so that they can be born in perfection in the underverse. This time Riddick is faced with his past, unstoppable armies, weapons of mass destruction and possibly the fate of the whole world.
A nice collection of some interesting films. Packed in a nice small package this is not just a bundle but an original collection. Plenty of action and tough guys for any appetite. Good purchase for the casual fan.
I’m a huge sci-fi fan and was interested in the Riddick movies upon seeing them. I told myself that I wouldn’t buy any of them unless they came out all together in a box set. Well, here it is for $14 (WalMart) I couldn’t go wrong. All three movies on two discs. If you’re hardcore about these movies you might want to stick with the original single DVDs because I think they have DTS and animated menus. The Pitch Black movie on this collection didn’t even have scene select, but the chapter button did work, so you can skip during the movie, you just can’t select a spot ahead of time.
Anyway, Pitch Black and TCOR are Unrated, but I didn’t really notice too much in the 3 extra minutes of Pitch Black. I noticed some, but nothing really substantial that changes the movie’s overall tone at all. I was satisfied with The Tremors Attack Pack Franchise Collection even if it was a little condensed in some areas, so naturally I was pleased with this collection and its price. I recommend this series to all sci-fi fans looking for a good old fashioned epic series.

Having already owned the three Riddick films on dvd, I stumbled upon this collection and discovered that it contained all three films in a nifty bundle. So instead of having all three films in separate dvd cases, you get them all in one with this here. I went ahead & purchased this and sold the three separate Riddick films that I had prior. Afterall, what have I got to lose?
Granted there are some missing effects from the menu screens (noticeably on COR) the movies themselves are all kept intact in high quality as seen in their originals (which is excellent), along with the full director’s cut versions of both PB and CoR. Some may be wondering why PB & Dark Fury are on the same disc this time around. Well for one, Dark Fury’s a short enough movie to fit onto the same disc as PB without sacrificing much of anything, it’s actually better this way. Now you won’t have to switch inbetween disc to watch (granted you already owned both PB & DF prior, if not, please excuse this). Afterall, PB and DF interlace with each other. It would only make sense for them both to be on the same disc. You definitely get alot for this collection’s small retail price. You’re getting three films which could run you at $30.00+, for under twenty bucks. 400+ minutes of nonstop sci-fi action.
All in all, to those of whom already own all three films, there really isn’t anything new here to see with the exception of the gnarly dvd packaging, along with the films being in a single dvd case on two discs (no new features that weren’t already found in the originals) as opposed to three. However, to those who don’t already own the Riddick films (or to those who simply owned the prior films on vhs), now’s your chance to PICK THIS UP! Let me inaugurate by saying thank you to Voyager Entertainment for deciding to set aside this beloved series on DVD. It really brings abet memories of my childhood. I’d bustle home after school to follow the voyages of the Yamato (ok, the ARGO) and her mission to the planet Iscandar.
To those who aren’t familiar with the anecdote, here’s a short summary. In the not so distant future, earth is under attack from a distant planet known as Gamelon. Gamelon’s ‘planet bombs’ rain down on earth, leaving it’s surface a desert wasteland. As a result, people are forced to live in underground cities. But the radioactivity is slowly seeping into the earth, and in one year, all life on earth will be archaic. The planet’s only hope lies in a message from a friend on a far away planet known as Iscandar. Starsha of Iscandar offers the cosmo DNA, a contrivance respectable of restoring earth to its passe beauty, to the people of earth. The message also includes the plans for an engine excellent of exceeding the run of light. Construction of a unusual residence ship begins, underneath the sunken remains of the WWII Japanese battleship YAMATO. The ship launches and begins it’s 148,000 light year slide to Iscandar, with the hopes of saving all mankind. But, can they heinous such a sizable distance and return to earth in only 365 days? Peruse the series to win out!
Those who have purchased the first DVD in the series will earn an determined improvment in the menu screens and the addtional options of this disc. However, the menu screens are IDENTICAL to the second disc, with the exception of music and some current peaceful photos. Also, it’s promise of a ‘Virtual tour of the Argo’ is a microscopic misleading, as it is merely a collection of pencil sketches and production cels (artwork) of the ship. I expected a 3D CGI ship to lope around and notice, but no such luck. The record quality and sound are only slightly better than the VHS versions, but at least it will never deteriorate. I’d have to give 1 star for the disc itself, and the rest for such a titanic myth. Fans will be delighted it’s on DVD, but won’t be too impressed with quality and the lack of extras on the disc.

For the uninitiated, here’s a rundown of the situation. In 2199 Earth was under attack by an “harmful” alien run called the Gamilons. The Gamilons bombed earth with “planet bombs” which destroyed the planet and emitted high levels of radiation, thus driving mankind into underground cities. In one Earth year the planet would become uninhabitable. Queen Starsha of Iscandar offers mankind hope in the manufacture of the Cosmic DNA which would cure all mankind from the radiation sickness. She sends Earth a message along with worthy technology that will allow mankind to move to Iscandar to glean the Cosmic DNA. The Star Force is formed to depart to Iscandar to find the Cosmic DNA. Their faithful battleship is the Argo, a renovated WWII era navy battleship remade into a Starship. There is unprejudiced one minor plight though, Iscandar is 148,000 Light Years away. No one has ever traveled that far before. More importantly, the Star Force only has one year to disappear there and support for a total of 296,000 Light Years.

Summed up, if you were ever a Star Blazers fan, give this (and Parts I & II) a survey. It’s substantial for a sprint down memory lane. If you’ve NEVER seen Star Blazers, give it a try, it’s a cult classic from the 80′s (along with other Americanized anime greats like Robotech, Voltron, Transor Z, etc) . The animation may gaze a miniature dated, but the storyline serene holds its hold very well against anything out there today. This series has stood the test of time. Due to microscopic distribution this explain may have slipped by the radar of a lot of people but it caught on like a fire with those who did accept it. Check it out and spy what everyone else was screaming about.

I have always had a fascination with this yarn. As a kid I remember checking the Disney report book version out of the library week after week. When I finally got to contemplate it, I was enthralled. When I first saw John Hillcoat’s film The Proposition I was literally petrified and dumbstruck with what I had fair witnessed. As a long-time aficionado of the awe genre I could say that fragment of me has become desensitized to onscreen violence and nothing really shocks me. Even though I’ve seen films with more violence throughout its running time, The Proposition fair had a heavy sense of despair, accurate ambiguity, and a Miltonian feel throughout. I must agree with film critic Roger Ebert when he said The Proposition seemed to mirror another dusky and violent narrative. Hillcoat’s film shares so remarkable the same themes and tone as Cormac McCarthy’s brutal recent, Blood Meridian, that one almost wondered if the film was adapted from McCarthy’s expansive unusual. But similarities aside, Hillcoat and Slit Cave’s (director and writer respectively) film can clearly stand on its possess two bloody legs.
The film begins with a bloody siege and shootout and we’re soon introduced to two of the three Burns’ brothers. We soon score out that both brothers, Charlie (played by Guy Pearce) and Mikey (played by Richard Wilson) are outlaws wanted for a multitude of defective crimes with a unique one the senseless rape and slay of the Hopkins family. One Capt. Stanley (Ray Winstone) who acts as law in this particular situation of the Outback. He’s gives older brother Charlie a proposition. He’ll spare the younger brother’s life from the hangman’s noose if Charlie finds their older brother Arthur (played with Kurtz-like menace by Danny Huston) and kills the outlaw leader. The quest is dwelling as Charlie accepts and sets out to net his brother. Whether Charlie will go through with killing his older brother Arthur is one thing the audience won’t bag out until the final minutes of the film. Even though there’s no love-lost between Charlie and Arthur, there’s composed the dilapidated bond of family that makes Charlie’s quest a complex one.

We realize early on that Charlie is very protective of his simpler, younger brother Mikey and would do anything to do his life. Guy Pearce does a huge performance as the conflicted and brooding Charlie Burns. There’s a collected intensity in Pearce’s performance. He’s ravishing unruffled through most of the film, but one could feel the palpable rage unprejudiced roiling beneath his brooding countenance. Pearce’s Charlie is one who is only a trigger away from exploding into outright violence. Charlie is definitely a child and creation of the lawless Outback the film is location in.
Arthur Burns on the other hand is introduced as an almost warrior-poet who would discover the sun station and spout poetry as easily as gun down an innocent or nick a man’s throat without missing a beat. Danny Huston does a bravura performance as the charismatic and wholly amoral Arthur. His performance easily matches that of Pearce’s scene for scene. Another performance that I must point out as being very strong in the film is Ray Winstone as Capt. Stanley, the Ahab of the memoir with his obsession to bring civilization to the lawless Outback and to bring Arthur Burns to ultimate justice even if it means dealing with the lesser wrong that is Charlie Burns.
The Proposition will be talked about alot for its unflinching view at violence onscreen. Though there’s been films that have more violence per hour than Hillcoat’s film, but the grievous brutality of the killings, maimings and rape in The Proposition has such an air of realism to it that one cringes at every gunshot distress and knife slashing. Like Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, The Proposition’s scenes of depravity makes one want to run into the shower and cleanse off the dirt, grime and stink of the film. It’s in this unflinching and realistic portrayal of death and violence that the film shares alot with McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. The images are difficult to leer, but our curiosity makes us gawk through squinted eyes to peep the fat breadth of the violence. In time, unprejudiced through the audiences acceptance of the oncreen violence do we soon become complicit in whats going on the shroud.
It is a shame that The Proposition had such a diminutive release in the US. I assume this film would’ve done as well as Eastwood’s Unforgiven in giving the audience a different, darker side of the Conventional West mythology (though its really the Australian Conventional West) . John Hillcoat has crafted himself a brutal and nihilistic film that’s very hard to observe but also difficult to ignore. The Proposition is a film I highly recommened people search for in the theaters before it disappears, but failing that they should search out for the dvd once its released in that medium. This film is that proper.
This film has often been compared to Eastwood’s spare and dismal UNFORGIVEN. There are certainly many similarities in tone. But if anything, there is even less redemption available at the ruin of this Australian western than at the ruin of that Oscar winner.
Simply establish, Ray Winstone plays the equivalent of the “recent sheriff” in a very minute, dull dusty “western” town in Australia. The worst bandits in his, the Burns brothers, are his notable goal, and when he corners and captures the two youngest brothers, Mickey and Charley (Guy Pearce), he offers Charley a proposition. He and his simple younger brother will be released if Charley goes out and kills his psychopathic older brother Arthur. If not, Mickey will be hung on Christmas Day, a few days away.
The fallout from this simple proposition is bleak, bleak, bleak. The film is monotonous titillating and takes time to effect tone and to let us devour the wonderful Australian scenery. As John Injure (as a bounty hunter) says, it’s the most horrific area he’s ever been. The scenery is graceful (sunsets, knowing rocks) and brutal…long expanses of sand and scruff. But the expressionless paddle is punctuated with moments of extremely graphic violence. Each bullet hole or knife damage (or spear pain) is painful to perceive. I’m not determined when I last saw a movie that made violence appear so terrible, so painful and so repulsive.
Everyone in the film is vast. Guy Pearce…exceedingly grubby…is torn between deciding how to deal with one of his brothers inevitably dieing. Ray Winstone gives a rich performance…honest when we mediate we’ve got this guy figured out, he shows another layer. And then another. He wins our sympathy finally. Emily Watson is his wife, and her performance is a litle colorless…it’s the biggest weakness in the characterizations. Not her fault…she’s honest too passive to be entirely believed.
The best performance comes from Danny Huston (John’s son, Anjelica’s brother) as Arthur, the psycho. His character appreciates nature and poetry, but also raping and stupid, painful murders. He’s a conundrum that’s never fully explained…but Huston is riveting. His oily, sweaty, dirty face is etched with emptiness…I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but trust me.
Other nice touches include an entertaining soundtrack (co-written by Chop Cave, who wrote the script) and lots of stuff focusing on the uneasy melding of the “white” man and aboriginies. This adds an extra layer of sadness, and of pains, to all the proceedings.
I would give the movie 4.5 stars, if I could. It doesn’t quite near 5 (the hump is unbiased occasionally over-indulgent…a couple of semi-important characters unprejudiced plunge from the legend), but it’s very compelling, very brutal filmmaking. NOT FOR KIDS!!!

After seeing Season 3, I have finally learned my lesson and will no longer build that comic assumption. This is because “The Shield: Season 3″ takes you even further down the rabbit hole that is this amazingly sunless and take-no-prisoners cop drama that aesthetic grand breaks all of the rules. You are given some deeply flawed characters… and yet, we detached want to learn more about them and even care what happens to them.

Unexcited, Vic has other problems to deal with, and I’m not even talking about his family issues. We also pick up deleted scenes with optional commentary. The packaging is nicely done with each disc housed in a Thinpak DVD case. I’m definitely looking forward to season four.

The tropical scenery is spectacular as they filmed all over the island; waterfalls, forests, grass plains, flowers, beaches, cliffs, mountains, oceans, streams, and considerable more. Contributing a mountainous amount to the exotic locale of the movie are animals, pirates, ships, and a tree house to beat all tree houses ever made. Similar to the role the submarine “Nautilus” filled in the earlier film “20,000 Leagues Below the Sea”, the tree house becomes a star in it’s enjoy correct. The amazing and inventive home designed by the castaways and from the ships get is improbable to spy.

Most of these actors also appeared in movies for the Disney television series as well.
VAULT DISNEY DVD VERSION
The 2 disc DVD treatment that Disney gave this film is perfect, starting with broad packaging and case. It is in Widescreen, the first widescreen release outside of theatres for the film in fact. And what a contrast it makes in the aesthetic situation island vistas of the film. The film has been cleaned up and remastered to its new brilliance with lush colors, gigantic image and depth, it fair sparkles. The DVD transfer itself is very well done, a high quality job. The audio is very desirable and crisp.
DVD EXTRAS
The extras on this DVD are what really execute the best version released of this film, and they are not all listed here at Amazon or even on the packaging. You have to hunt them down and find creative with your remote. So let me succor by telling you what to perceive for if you steal this… For starters they have the unique cartoon that was released with the movie, “Sea Salts” allowing you to glimpse this with the kids the contrivance that it is meant to be seen. There is a 2 cramped “1960 Disney Studio Album”, a montage of projects, attractions, shows, and films being made and released that year. There is an audio commentary as an alternate track that features comments from cast and crew.
Next we have 23 minutes from a vintage Walt Disney television “Unbelievable World of Disney” episode titled “Speed to Paradise”, that present the making of the film gradual the scenes. There is a “Pirates” music video roar along featuring pirate themed clips from Disney films, TV shows, cartoons, and the theme park attraction “Pirates of the Caribbean”, all dwelling to the Disney tune of “Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirates Life For Me”. An original or unexpected extra is a featurette that has 20 minutes of excerpts from a 1940 non-Disney version of the chronicle.
The dvd location has Audio Archives state to photos from the film, including 2 Interactive Sound Studios, 2 songs from the film, new 1960 radio spots. Another valid treat is the complete LP soundtrack of the novel “Storybook Album” of the movie released in 1960.
SUMMARY
I really enjoyed this DVD, and this film really got the best of treatment by Disney. They simply outdid themselves and I am one grateful viewer. I wish all the really edifying classic Disney films got at least some of this royal treatment. They have a reputation as the best studio about protecting their used source material, archives, etc, but they are not always edifying in using it for their DVD’s so I can really indulge in the wretchedness here by the decision makers. Thank you Disney for this compilation that really honors this gem of a film the blueprint it should be!!!! My highest recommendation if you are considering buying this DVD.
The folks at Walt Disney Home Video have achieve together four ample modern “Vault Disney” releases that truly showcase DVD technology at its best. “Swiss Family Robinson,” one of Walt Disney’s best-loved live-action adventures, benefits immensely from DVD technology, especially the wide-screen presentation and THX restored narrate and sound quality. The widescreen alone would have elated most fans, so the plethora of extras on the supplemental disc are truly special. I have never seen a DVD with so many extras presented in such a creative and easily accessible scheme. Thank you to everyone at Walt Disney Home Video for this fabulous DVD. Hopefully, more titles will follow in this series (like Third Man on the Mountain, Darby O’Gill and the Limited People, The Moonspinners, and Summer Magic) and ALL Disney DVD’s will be released in their recent theatrical ratios
