I reflect that when you bewitch the longest Harry Potter book and turn it into the shortest Harry Potter film, that a colossal number of complaints by fans as to what has been prick will be inevitable after they peer “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Not that this means that the legions of fans will be bitterly disappointed by the film version, but rather that there will be regrets over not getting to study current scenes on the cloak. For example, Quidditch is completely out of the film, denying Ron of his best moments in the sun (begin singing “Weasley is our king”) . So do not be surprised when your mind keeps shifting to what has been slit and distracting you from time to time while watching this summer’s latest blockbuster.

When last we left our hero, Harry fell victim to a trap to bring befriend Lord Voldermort, which cost Cedric Diggory his life. The Ministry of Magic wants things hushed up, but Dumbledore tells the students at Hogwarts that Diggory was murdered and Lord Voldermort murdered him. As this fifth film opens Harry and his noxious cousin Dudley are attacked by Dementors. Harry uses his wand to defend them and is summarily expelled from Hogwarts for using magic in front of a muggle. The pleasurable news is that Harry gets reinstated, but the unpleasant news is that the Ministry of Magic uses the opportunity to appoint Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary at the Ministry, as the school’s fresh Defense Against the Sad Arts professor. However, Umbridge teaches only the theory and not the practice because she insists Harry is a liar and there is nothing the students need to learn to defend themselves from. Then things regain progressively worse.
“The Order of the Phoenix” was the most maddening book to read, not because it was the longest, but because I disapprove Dolores Umbridge. As far as I am concerned she makes Voldermort gawk sterling, because he knows he is atrocious, putrid, unpleasant, mean and defective inside, while Umbridge thinks the ends explain the means. She is puritanical, sadistic and hypocritical. If there were not going to be children reading this review I would advise you what I really consider of her. Suffice it to say, she makes me sick and I do not even recall pleasure in loving to disfavor her, which is why my only requirement going into the film is that the Weasley Twins fetch their moment of glory when they become the disloyal opposition to the unique order at Hogwarts.

Daniel Radcliffe continues to have the tote the heavy load in these films as Harry, with Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley being reduced more and more often to reaction shots while Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger remains the Mistress of Exposition in these films. Alan Rickman as Snape remains pitch perfect casting and Gary Oldman as Sirius Sad is also a joy to glance, but I discovered in this film that I really like Michael Gambon’s performance as Dumbledore, mainly because he always plays up the character’s intelligence and I net I rob his interpretation to that of the gradual Richard Harris, forgive my heresy. Imelda Staunton does not perceive as powerful like a toad as Umbridge does in the book, but she captures the character’s detestability from open to enact. We are always painfully aware how hazardous she is, whether she smiles or not. Also, Evanna Lynch steals more scenes as Luna Lovegood than Katie Leung does as Cho Chang, and it is certainly spirited to gaze Neville (Matthew Lewis) towering over everybody, with Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) in the soundless but strong role for the pivotal sextet.
After seeing this film I raced home and got out my copy of the book and starting cataloguing things that had been gash. Such comparisons are, as I suggested up top, inevitable for anyone who has read the book. At this point what I missed the most were some of the conversations between Maggie Smith’s Professor McGonagall and Umbridge where Minerva verbally flaws the Inquisitor. The omission that I am focusing on the most is the whole bit about why Neville’s family was a target of Voldermort (I agree with Harry: always say his name and thereby gash its power), since that suggests implications for what will happen in the final book, which gets released in unbiased ten more days. I also would have liked to have seen an over reaction to Harry discovering his father bullied Snape at Hogwarts. My celebrated section ends up being the impressive wizard’s duel between Voldermort and Dumbledore. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg does a gracious job of whittling down Rowling’s book and director David Yates does a competent job, but fans will simply want more. Also, we know what happens in the next book and all of the terrible things that happen in this film cannot attend but seem inconsequential in comparison. Plus, fans will be distracted by mining this film for clues as to what will happen in the last book.
I care for Harry Potter, OK? So before you freak out, let me catch that out of the scheme. The book version “Order of the Phoenix” was oustanding. I also believe that previous directors have done radiant edifying to gargantuan jobs of translating the books to film (though I must say things went a itsy-bitsy downhill once Chris Columbus left.)
All that being said, here’s the kicker:
The movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” played like a Cliff’s Notes adaptation of the book.
It lopped off a lot of the charm and romance and heartfelt pathos of the book— as well as a lot of the pure creative touches— in order to obtain the main arc of the epic down. On top of that, it made “adaptations” to the book in order to collect the legend provocative along— yet all these “compromises” were actually worse than what JK Rowling originally wrote!
Don’t have me? Here is only SOME of what is rotten with this movie:
–Poor devlopment of the Harry/Cho Chang arc (The kiss is about all you glean. No true feeling slow it at all. No devlopement of Harry’s crush. No final crash up argument on Valentine’s Day.)
–Making Cho into an contemptible snitch (which is why she and Harry broke up in the movie.) In the movie SHE is the one who betrays Harry. Tiring,.
–No hospital scenes. No meeting of Neville’s parents.
–Perfunctory explanation of Grimmaud Plot
–Perfunctory development of Occlumency
–Harry gets to hear the prophecy while standing in the Department of Mysteries rather than later with Dumbledore. On top of this, he gets to hear the prophecy objective by holding it in his hand. That makes no logical sense at all!
–The Department of Mysteries itself is compressed down into one room (the room with the prophecies.) All the frigid rooms (with the blue lights, the 12 doors, the clocks, the brains, and so on) are all impartial ignored. Those were such spacious inventions by JK Rowling–perhaps some of the most creative stuff in all the books– that I can’t possess they fair slit them!
–The room with the arch is made into a really slow location.
–The battle scene is really short and rather listless.
–Snape’s memory of being tortured by James Potter and his argument with Lily Potter is compressed into literally a total of 4 seconds of film. That scence is so PIVOTAL to the rest of the book series that I can’t enjoy they got away with not fully developing the scene.
On top of all these dwelling issues, the WORST section about this movie is that there was really no FEELING in it. The whole range of emotional arcs that are so well-developed in the book are done absolutely terribly in the movie. Yeah, Sirius dies. In the book, it is a devatating moment. In the movie, it’s like “Oh, well.” Harry, Ron and Hermione don’t have many moments together. There is no laughing in the movie. We don’t fetch to feel pathos for Neville because his parents are insane. We don’t accumulate to feel the gratefulness of the Weasleys when Harry saves Mr Weasley. There are no lighthearted moments. Almost every scene except one or two that could have developed the emotional attachment we feel to the characters has been summarily excluded.
Like one other reviewer said: The movie is too short, yet it feels too long.
That is, sorry to say, a perfect description of a hack job.
I am quite disappointed.

Deliciously Clever Comedy![]()
Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver are absolutely terrific as mother-daughter con artists out to rob rich men of their money. After pulling off what was supposed to be their final heist before parting ways, Weaver persuades her daughter to go through with one more.
Gene Hackman is hilarious as William Tensy, their latest target, a chain-smoking millionaire who doesn’t appear to have much longer to live. Ray Liotta is fantastic as one of their past cons, who was truly in love with Weaver. The always energetic Jason Lee is the guy in love with Hewitt’s Paige, who is also beginning to fall for him.
It’s a wonderfully complicated love circle with some hilarious results. Hackman steals the show, and Weaver is quite funny and amusing, especially when sporting her Russian accent. Anne Bancroft delivers her usual good performance in an almost cameo role as Weaver’s mentor.
Heartbreakers is not as cruel as it could be, but always a delight to watch. Some have found the length a bit much, but it moves along at trip-hammer speed, engrossing all the way through. I feel it is a truly underrated comedy and one of the best 2001 had to offer.
Original, fresh, clever, funny and spectacular!!!!![]()
I believe that this was a great-great commedy. The actors where hillarius with very good roles. The story was nice and clever and personally I enjoyed each and every line-dialogue that existed in the movie!! The atmosphere in the movie was great and I believe that the director did a talented and wonderfull job developing the movie as he takes the maximum out of every actor in the movie.
The romance within the comedy kicks in just about the right time and despite the high speed with which the movie goes on(its just a movie after all) I really loved the whole concept.
To all people who like comedies-romantic comedies you will certainly like this one more or less.
As for me this is one of the best comedy films I have ever seen and it came as a great surprise as I rent it from the video club not knowing anything about the plot or the movie.
Having seen some negative remarks about this film I am not a great film reviewer or anything and I judge this film without comparing it to other older ones regarding the plot etc. I don’t care if this film copied an older or it stole the plot, or the story was silly, of men are silly etc!! Simply this was the best (non-black comedy) romantic film that I saw the last few years that I liked and enjoyed each and every minute of it! Imagine that the second time I saw it I couldn’t change the channel and whatch the 3rd Harry Potter film that I had just rented (there goes another extra 2 euros for keeping the film for another day). Instead I watched the film that was on tv (sorry Harry)
Heartbreakers![]()
Quick. Make some popcorn, settle into your favorite easy chair, and be prepared to enjoy 2 hours of mindless energetic fun. You won’t glean valuable insights into the meaning of the universe, as heartthrob Jason Lee innocently seeks in this lightweight offering, but you will have been pleasantly entertained. The unlikely cast of Weaver, Hewitt, Hackman, and Liotta work suprisingly well. Call it “The Sting” lite. This amusing farce revolves around the exploits of a mother and daughter team of gold digging grifters. Jennifer Love Hewitt as the daughter supplies plenty of eye candy, but her acting skills and comedic timing are first rate. I suspect we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future. You gotta love Gene Hackman as an obnoxious, unrepentant tobacco billionaire who’s face seems to be perpetually obscured in a cloud of cigarette smoke. Ray Liotta does not look much older than he did in “Goodfellas” and is hilarious as a shady businessman/love interest for Sigourney Weaver who in a rare comedic appearance, turns in a humorous performance. Several cameos by familiar personalities from television and film are unexpected fun. This is a movie that does not take itself too seriously and does not expect you too either. Enjoy.

Award-winning Film![]()
“Medellín… sumas y restas” (Medellín… Addictions and Substractions – 2004) takes you to the 80′s, when drug cartels are in complete control of the city of Medellin and its population. The world of luxury, lust, and power seduce Santiago (Juan Carlos Uribe), a young engineer, as he ventures into the treacherous business of cocaine trafficking. Within a few weeks, Santiago becomes a wealthy and powerful man with the entire world at his feet. However, when he comes face-to-face with the true nature of the drug business, Santiago discovers he is trapped in a world of violence where loyalty is traded for money and the consequence of a mistake is death. Santiago soon finds out that in the extravagant world of cocaine, one loses perspective of what is gained and what is lost.
Great Mafia movie – play again the Colombian drog cartel stereotype![]()
The director has been criticized in the past for only showing the bad face of Colombian society. This movie is not the exception but it is a good mafia story!
The acting is amazing! What impress me the most is that as usual with Gaviria the actors are not professional actors but actual – real life people, many times acting their own life roles.
Great Movie!
Drug Cartels far reaching effects![]()
This is am amazing, thoughtful and extremely well done documentary on the far reaching effects of the drug cartels and how it affects every aspect of all lives. Riveting to the point that I couldn’t pull myself away from it. Just one of the fascinating things about the film, is all the industries that the cartel violence has generated, like plastic surgeons to repair the “packages” sent to the homes of the kidnap victims. Also, what a common occurrence kidnapping is and all the things that north Americans take for granted. Also made clear to me how we’re all a little too comfortable with the “it can’t happen here syndrome” since it CAN and is, slowly, small town by small town. Poverty makes people do quite a bit to feed their families and we shouldn’t underestimate what the Cartels can convince uneducated, desperate people to do for money to save their children from starvation.
This is an fabulous, informative, well thought and executed, chilling documentary that no one should miss. It should be shown in every school in every state. Drugs do much more than kill with the toll they take on society, and there’s little we really do to stop it, or even legalize it, if that what it takes. A MUST see. Don’t miss it and give to all those you care about. I have and all have felt as I do.

Now like many I too gain that Jean Claude Van Damme isn’t the greatest actor in the world. He’s an action hero after all and powerful like Steven Seagal, he’s someone we wouldn’t usually request a 5 star acting performance from. He’s objective passe to kicking people in the head and looking all heavenly whilst doing so. Now he’s older and currently a man who’s career was absolutely dying a death, at least until this film was made and now he has the possibility to be support on effect and revive his career as a more serious actor.

So what makes this film different from all the rest? I hear you ask. Well for one he’s not playing some clichéd character who you waste up shouting “kick his head off” at. He’s actually playing himself in a fictional setting and as exclusive as it sounds it actually allows him to reveal noteworthy more acting talent than you would have first concept.
So what’s the film about? I hear you secondly ask. Well, JCVD’s life isn’t going too well and is constantly in battle to find movie roles but is constantly beaten by his rival Steven Seagal. His wife has divorced him and is in good battles for the suitable to have access to his daughter. He also has quite a few tax and money troubles to boot, so to speed his troubles he decides to go home to his native Belgium only this isn’t as serene as he’d hoped.

Upon his arrival in Belgium he goes into a Post Office, and after his fans remark a local policeman that the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme is home and in the local post office. Then out of nowhere a gunshot rings from the post office sending people into a apprehension and shy that it turns out to be the movie star himself holding up the post office, or is it?
Well what entails is a film about hostage negotiation and a traumatic movie star life that is topped off with a difficult site. It’s not the typical JCVD film as it contains very runt fighting karate style, but the film is made truly special with the defining monologue. Roughly half procedure through the film, JCVD is brought away from the record and the film in quite a irregular style that allows him to sigh a monologue that gives the impression it comes straight from the heart. He talks about his life and career and how he wants to be remembered as a more serious actor. I got the impression that a lot of the monologue although in a scripted movie, was actually improvised or at least written by JCVD himself.
I would highly recommend this film to any JCVD and non-JCVD fan as it’s truly his best work to date. This is seriously a possible breakthrough movie for him to bring his career encourage up to urge and rather than continuing to star in “straight to DVD” movies like this one, sadly, he may be given more movies that open in the cinema and give him a wider appeal as the man is calm a name that captures peoples interests.
Get it, you wont be disappointed.
I came upon a crowd outside a movie theater bearing the title: JCVD. The theater is jammed with dedicated fans having memories of Van Dammes past International natty star region from the 1988 Bloodsport.
What a movie! It likely surpassing the collective expectations from the initiate of the entire audience. The opening scene rocks. A 4-minute film within a film begins with vintage-like Van Damme moments of high energy action. This single-shot sequence unfolds vamping up Van Dammes pre-existing persona in dynamic fashion. Then this unbelievable assembly of action ends with a hilarious erroneous wall falling over when a door is simply slammed too hard by a winded and exhausted Van Damme blithely complaining to a movie director, who couldnt care less (as in dependable life), that he is 47 and it is simply too hard to do these furious action scenes at his age!
The film then pivots under the young but world class directorship of Mabrouk El Mechri to the main anecdote, where the audience is treated to a Van Damme they have never seen before acting with astonishing depth and character. This transformation from a shallow bigger-than-life action hero to portraying moral down-to-life emotions will be worth the admission alone.
Van Dammes dramatic performance and his featured monologue — are powerful. The director caught Van Damme on film in a plan to invent any audience celebrate with rousing enthusiasm alongside Van Damme as he convincingly relates his concept in the American dream, then address his marriage and drug problems of his past, and how he wants a second chance to build a incompatibility in the world. It is one of those cinema moments bordering on being a masterpiece; it re-invents Van Damme.
The camera floats through the chaos of Van Dammes life and caresses Van Dammes face that has taken on a splendid amount of character. Van Damme has stories in his eyes. Van Damme has life in his eyes. Van Damme has sadness in his eyes. Van Damme has regrets in his eyes. Van Damme has a message to thunder. The movie cleverly uncovers the pitfalls slack celebrity state with humor that Van Damme does very well.
The space borrows on Van Dammes trying past. Playing himself, a beaten and miserable Van Damme returns to his native Belgium in hopes of getting out of the limelight. Van Damme is financially drained and makes a bee line to his home bank. But the Belgium bank is in the midst of being robbed. Van Damme is caught up in the ensuing mayhem as the police on arrival wrongly capture Van Damme is piece of the robbery team. The loyal criminals are enjoying extravagant excellent luck. Not only do they have Belgiums biggest movie star in their control, but through his ill-luck he is also taking the tumble for them! In trying to pick up a scheme out, Van Damme realizes his Hollywood action roles of his past all plunge flat when a exact gun is pressed to his head.
This is a movie to be seen, not merely read about. Not only is Van Damme re-born but so too is the audience through a shared experience with Van Dammes moral failures and triumphs! (Dr. R. Witmer, Ph.D. co-author of Van Dammes Biography appearing [...])

Frequency: Incredible! This movie has it all.![]()
I first saw Frequency the day it was released in theatres, after I saw a preview that got me extremely interested in the movie. I didn’t know quite what to expect, but what I found was well written movie, with excellent acting performances and a very gripping storyline, a truly enjoyable moviegoing experience. The story focuses on a cop named John Sullivan (played brilliantly by James Caviezel in a breakthrough big screen performance) who lives in Queens, NY in early October 1999, which happens to be the date of an appearance of a phenomenon that allows John to communicate with his father Frank (with a very solid and emotional performance from Dennis Quaid), on the same radio, in the same house. The interesing part is that John talks to Frank thirty years earlier, merely days before Frank, a firefighter, dies herocially trying to rescue a person trapped in a blazing fire. Frank and John end up making catastrophic changes in the timeline, which leads to the brutal murder of John’s mother(in an excellent performance from Elizabeth Mitchell) only days later in 1969. The movie is really a combination of several different elements. First of all it focuses on a father-son relationship between Frank and John. The interaction between Caviezel and Quaid is superb, and leads to some of the films most emotionally moving moments. The emotion is skillfully achieved, as Caviezel and Quaid don’t act face-to-face, but across a HAM radio. The interplay between the two time periods really adds to the movie without overshadowing the its story. Frequency also combines elements of suspense, action, mystery, and tense drama. Frequency covers all of the bases, and does so very skillfully. This brings us to the DVD disc itself, which comes from New Line Home Video, who completely loaded the disc with a huge amount of special features, including many interesting DVD-ROM features that can be accessed by any PC with a DVD-ROM drive and PC Friendly installed. If you don’t have PC Friendly on your computer, the DVD will install it for you if you so choose. The disc also has deleted scenes, as well as several feature legnth commentaries(by the director, producer, and actor Noah Emmerich who plays the adult Gordo, John’s best friend). The disc also includes an interesting original documentary, as well as a trailer and animation galleries. If you are are willing to let your mind go a little bit to accept the science of the storyline, it actually becomes a fascinating part of the movie. This movie would definitely be a worthy addition to any DVD collection. Frequency also offers an extremely exciting and rewarding finale that will not disappoint anyone who watches it. The bottom line is this: Frequency is a wonderful movie, with incredibly strong emotional performances from the entire cast, very moving dramatic moments, as well as tense, gripping action sequences, and a rousing finale. Frequency is definitely one to remember. This movie truly has it all!
It’s A Keeper!!![]()
This review refers to the New Line Plarinum Series DVD edition of “Frequency”…
I consider a good thriller, one that not only keeps me on the edge of my seat after the first viewing, but one that keeps me there with every viewing. “Frequency” is one of those, that no matter how often I watch it, it takes it’s hold on me from the first frame and won’t let go until the last. It’s more then just a thriller though. It’s some fabulous Sci-Fi entertainment with great special effects, it’s the poignant story of a special bond between father and son, and there’s lots of heart pounding action sequences as well. Add to that one fabulous cast including Dennis Quaid, Jim Caviezel and Andre Braugher, a fresh take on time travel, and you are in for 2 hours of some fine entertainment.
A Police Officer John Sullivan(Caviezel), by a miracle of nature, is able to contact his father, Frank(Quaid), on an old ham radio. The miracle?…The Northern Lights make a rare appearance in New York. What’s truly amazing is that his father died thirty years earlier fighting a fire. He is able to change the course of history, by forewarning his father about the tragedy to come. But by changing the course of history, John and Frank may have unleashed an evil chain of events yet to come. They most work together, with the time they have to stop a serial killer.
The DVD is a great buy. The transfer is gorgeuos. A wonderful widescreen presentation that takes in all the action and special effects in brillant colors. It made be viewed with DD5.1 Surround, which brings it all right into your living room, and it also has an option for DD2.0. A ton of features include deleted scenes, a documentary, “The Science and Technology Behind Frequency”, Commentary, you can isolate the score, and much more(see buying info for complete list of extras). There are subtitles in English, and the snap case unfolds to some production notes and a few scenes from the film. You really get more bang for your buck with this great package.
It’s a film that will have your heart racing one moment and the next will evoke a lump in your throat at the touching moments. It’s got something for everyone. It’s rated PG-13, but parents may want to view it before hand, as some of the scenes are quite violent.
It’s A Definate Keeper!….Get the popcorn ready and enjoy…Laurie

One False Move
First rate science fiction thriller![]()
This highly imaginative science fiction thriller is an entertaining mind bender of a film. Toby Emmerich’s story takes a fresh approach to the time travel angle. Rather than having people traveling through time, Emmerich has them communicating through time using a Ham Radio that has been augmented by an Aurora Borealis. Ok, there aren’t many Aurora Borealis events as far south as New York City, but there isn’t any trans-time communication noted in the scientific literature either, so we need to allow the story a little latitude.
After we accept the premise, this ingenious plot incorporates many different elements to entice the viewer. There is the human angle of a son speaking to his dead father, the many twists resulting from altering the ribbon of time, and the solving of a thirty-year-old serial murder case. The various elements are combined effectively by director Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear, Fallen) to produce a fast paced action thriller with sufficient character development to bind us emotionally to the characters. The fascinating thing about the detective story is that the facts of the crime keep changing in unexpected ways each time John (James Caviezel) imparts something to his father (Dennis Quaid) that causes him to change history. In addition, the action sequences are well done and the visual effects, especially the digitized Aurora are nicely rendered. The aging makeup is also realistic.
The acting was excellent as well, though the New York accents were pretty bad. Dennis Quaid alternated between the goofy and endearing dad and the action hero, and managed to keep it from seeming incongruous. This was a breakout performance by James Caviezel, who heretofore has been confined to minor roles. His was a very emotional and tense role and he handled it extremely well. I was also impressed with Elizabeth Mitchell who gave a vivacious performance as John’s mother.
I enjoy a good intelligent science fiction thriller. Lately, science fiction has been subsumed into the horror category, since you seldom see a science fiction story that isn’t an excuse to hack up some cast members. This film was more in the tradition of Twilight Zone, relying more on an inventive story than grisly effects to capture the audience. That’s why I rated this film a 9/10. With luck, this will inspire a return to more creative science fiction.

I liked this movie a lot. It may not have the depth of a Kurosawa samurai fable. But the film’s director, Hiroshi Inagaki was no pace. Anyone who’s seen his other movies (Chushingura, Samurai Trilogy, honest to name a few) knows he’s very adept at handling sweeping dramas with immense casts of characters.
The Japanese title of this movie is Furinkazan which refers to the Kanji characters on the banner flown by the Takeda clan. It describes the military strategy of the clan’s leader, Shingen – swift as the wind (fu), tranquil as a forest (rin), aggressive like fire (ka), and stable like a mountain (zan) . I guess that’s a limited too considerable to keep in an English title!
The battle scenes in this movie are glowing salubrious. But I also liked the anecdote of unrequitted like attractive two of the main characters, Kansuke Yamamoto and Princess Yu. Toshiro Mifune plays Kansuke, an true historical figure who was a military strategist for the Takeda clan. Yoshiko Sakuma gives a racy performance as the attractive and sometimes feisty princess. Some Western viewers may get the movie’s worship chronicle a minute exclusive since there are no launch declarations of affection, and no hugging and kissing. This is a typical musty Japanese romance.

The movie reaches its climax at Kawanakajima, the scene of one of the most well-known battles in Japanese history. It was there that Kansuke made a gargantuan military blunder that nearly spelled doom for the Takeda clan.
If you like narrative war dramas with a miniature romance thrown in, then you might want to give this movie a try.
I am bit surprised to read the two previous reviews. The AnimEigo edition of Samurai Banners proves to be well presented and its subtitles with its different colors to look who’s talking proves to be one of the highlights. This movie got marvelous subtitles!! Maybe that reviewer who didn’t secure the subtitles should check his DVD player. He may have turned something off.

I enjoyed watching Samurai Banners despite of its 163 minutes or so length and the fact that its more of a samurai drama film with a war theme then anything else. Toshiro Mifune who have been considered as Japan’s verison of John Wayne is well cast in this movie as it followed the destiny of the Takeda clan through many campaigns. For those who may care, Takeda clan also featured in the film, Kagamusha. Mifune’s character, Yamamoto Kansuke (steady historical figure), joined the clan, and it helped lead it to many victories, gaining the trust and confidence of his lord and along the diagram, plunge in fancy with his lord’s concubine. The movie is well acted, scripted and directed although fans of bloody battles may have to leer else where.
Although the movie seem to dragged here and there but overall, despite of the length, the film moves with big deal of interest. The audience will be caught up in the going on of the Takeda clan and its struggles as they faced stronger foes as the movie goes on. For any Mifune fan, this movie should be on the mandatory choose list. Although Mifune’s fortune fell after he left his partnership with Kurosawa, this movie calm showed him at his best.

There are couple of consuming extras in this package. There is a one about character biographies which should be explore before the movie since it introduced the viewer to all the major characters of the movie. It probably be easier to followed the film. Second for more die-hard fan, there is Interactive Program Notes which gives you a elegant basic history lesson on period of warring warlords in Japan. It might be fascinating to read this before watching the film. It may succor understand the motivation leisurely some of the characters. Both features are ravishing short in duration.
Overall a elegant expedient film, not uninteresting and although bit pricy, a definitely worth the money.
(History minded viewer should read the book Kawanakajima 1553-64 by Stephen Turnbull for more in-depth historical observe at the background of this movie. Its share of the Osprey Campaign Series #130.)

If you’ve never heard of Fawlty Towers, you are truly missing a classic comedy series. Don’t let the fact that it’s British humor turn you away either. It’s not your typical British sitcom.
Fawlty Towers was a series of 12 episodes made in the 1970′s about a hotel in the runt town of Torquay, England (pronounced Torkee) . The episodes all revolve around the mishaps and misunderstandings and flat out irrational behavior of the hotel owner Basil Fawlty played by John Cleese of Monty Python fame. Cleese does a unbelievable job melding physical comedy, sarcasm, and British wit, but of course he doesn’t do this alone.
Prunella Scales (frail RSC actress) plays Basil’s wife Sybil Fawlty while Cleese’s wife in true life Connie Booth plays Polly, the hotel maid/receptionist/waitress. Andrew Sachs plays Manuel, the Spanish waiter who does a unbelievable job playing opposite Basil Fawlty and aggravating him to the point of frustration. Label that every character at one point in the series explains Manuel’s droll behavior with the excuse “He’s from Barcelona.”

There are a few other regular characters such as the Major who is an old-fashioned, rather senile war feeble and the two ladies who are also customary and rather senile.
As I said earlier, there are 12 episodes. Each one is very modern and I never pick up tired of watching them. The following is a short summary of each of the episodes.
A Touch of Class – Basil places an ad for the hotel to attract upscale clientele. A Lord Melbury makes reservations at the hotel, but he isn’t who everyone thinks he is.

The Builders – Basil hires O’Reilly, a cheap Irish builder, to rennovate the hotel, but when he and his wife leave for an outing and Polly leaves Manuel in charge, everything goes sinful.
The Wedding Party – Basil gets into a series of misunderstandings when a flirty Frenchwoman and a young, sexually mischievous couple and their parents halt at the hotel.
The Hotel Inspectors – Sybil tells Basil there are hotel inspectors in town. He tries second guesses who the inspector is throughout the whole note and in the process is beat up, cries in front of a guest, and is frustrated beyond opinion.
Gourmet Night – Basil attempts to assist a special gourmet dinner to the town sophisticates. Of course it goes terribly sinister. (notice him beat a car with a branch)
The Germans – Sybil is in the hospital with an ingrown toenail. Basil ends up in the hospital as well after a series of accidents, but escapes to the hotel unbiased in time to greet some German guests.
Communication Problems – Everyone is frustrated when Mrs. Richards, a woman with a hearing serve she chooses not to turn on, stays at the hotel.
The Psychiatrist – Basil freaks out when he learns about two psychiatrists staying at the hotel.
Waldorf Salad – An English woman and her husband, an American, quit at the hotel. The cook leaves early and Basil fills in to cook the couple a hot meal.
The Kipper and The Corpse – A guest dies in the night and Basil has to gather status the body in a discrete state until the coroner arrives.
The Anniversary – Basil pretends to forget he and Sybil’s anniversary. He plans a surprise party that falls apart when she storms out excited.
Basil the Rat – A health inspector give the hotel one day to shapely up their act. The hotel staff survey Manuel’s pet rat (named Basil) and try to fetch rid of it.
If you like British comedy, this is definitely a classic to believe. If you like comedy, this is a treat.
The best thing about these episodes is the detail interested in each episode. Every time you glance the shows, you spy something recent. And all details in the episodes describe to each other. For instance in A Touch of Class, pay discontinuance attention to the pile of bricks mentioned at the beginning of the episode. You’ll gaze them again.
Another itsy-bitsy cute fact about the shows is the design the signs change during the title frame. The opening of the reveal is a scene from outside the hotel and the ticket saying Fawlty Towers, but after the first episode, the mark changes to the point that it spells things such as Watery Towels.
Yes, the collection is on the expensive side but it is well worth the note and a must ogle for everyone. I am positive once you peruse these shows, you will eye them over and over again and adore them for the classics they are.
Right. If you want to know precisely what you accumulate on this spectacular plot, then read on. If you, however, like the element of surprise, then don’t read it and impartial order it and bite your nails anticipating all the extraordinary limited…oh, fair read the bloody thing!

Things I learned from Fawlty Towers:
1. One nail isn’t strong enough to hang a giant moose head on your wall.
2. When your car doesent work, sometimes it helps to attack it with a tree branch.

3. If you steal a guest breakfast in bed and exclaim to him and he does not disappear or deliver aid to you – he may be slow.
4. A burglar dismay and a fire panic sound quite a lot alike.

Average horror flick reminiscent of earlier haunted house movies![]()
I was eager to check this movie out because I really liked the docudrama “A Haunting in Connecticut” which was part of a series titled “Haunting” by the Discovery Channel. This movie was supposedly inspired by those true events. In the docudrama, Karen and Ed Parker and their family move into an old home in Connecticut, not realising the house harbors entities that are far from benign. The most affected is the couple’s 14-year-old son, Paul, who seems to be most susceptible to the hauntings. In desperation, the family contacts Edward and Lorraine Warren, the same people who investigated another famous haunted house that became known as “The Amityville Horror”.
In the movie version, the story remains true to the original to some extent. Virginia Madsen plays Sara Campbell, whose teenage son Matt [Kyle Gallner] is suffering from some form of brain cancer. The treatment requires them to make a long commute and to cut on the travel time, Sara decides to lease a house close by to the hospital. She finds an old house for cheap [the family already has money problems] and finds out it used to serve a darker purpose than a residence. The family moves in anyway, and straight away Matt begins seeing things and hearing noises. He moves into the basement which has a sealed off room. Upon finally opening it, Matt discovers what the house used to be – a mortuary and funeral home. Soon, the rest of the family begins to see and hear strange things and Matt together with Wendy [Amanda Crew] investigate the history of the house, discovering some truly horrific facts about the house’s dark past, having to do with death, necrophilia, missing bodies and a horrific tragedy.
The movie is actually well-paced – I did not find the pace plodding nor boring. There is no gore or over-the-top special effects here. In many ways, this movie reminded me of The Amityville Horror II with the son of the house being the focus of the hauntings. Some scenes were scary, especially the flashbacks to the past involving incidents of necrophilia. The acting was ok, not great, but Kyle Gallner was quite credible in his role.
What disappointed me was the omission of two central characters in the movie – they did not include the Warrens in the movie, who played a significant role in the actual case. Instead, the movie shows a priest, Reverend Popescu [Elias Koteas] as the person the family turns to for help. His acting was not very impressive in this movie. Once again, I felt the priest role here was reminiscent of the one portrayed in The Amityville Horror.
Conclusion – for those who love the horror genre, this movie does not really bring anything new to the table. The acting and effects are decent enough, and I did find myself entertained. Recommended as a rental.
Just didnt make it.![]()
The acting was very good and at no fault to them but once again hollywood has destroyed what otherwise was a pretty good haunting story. The one done in 02 was much better and probably a little more true to what happened. While watching I got the feeling that the story just wanted to hurry up and end but had to much time to kill so any scene it could think of would do. Could of been done better.
The documentary Was SOOOO Much Better!![]()
Leave it to Hollywood to take a really good creepy ghost story and mess it up with bad acting and unbelievable events. Add some lame CG and you have this movie. Looking at the stupid looking cover of ectoplasm coming out of the kids mouth has dumb written all over it.
The original documentary with the black eyed demon was really creepy when I watched it late one night, years ago. If they would have just stuck to the original story and got some better Actors and Director…this could have been a really good creepfest. Why on earth would you add what they did and take away what was scary and creepy from the documentary? I don’t get it.
Save your time and money and if you want to see the really creepy version of this movie, get the documentary. I almost came close to walking out on this one when the CG came out of the guys mouth but I wanted to see how they would end it. I should have left then and saved myself some time. This movie is such a waste to watch.

this movie should be required viewing for any american who forgets how lucky we all are. the acting is astounding and many scenes in the film are unforgetable. be warned that there are many disturbing images in the film. these aren’t gratuitous as they paint the perfect portray of the madness in rwanda in 1994. one of the best films i have seen in a long time.
To reply the fact that genocides are tranquil active in our supposedly enlightened times is gruesome, yet through films such as BEYOND THE GATES, HOTEL RWANDA, and SOMETIMES IN APRIL we are gradually bring informed about one particular genocide – that occurred in 1994 in Rwanda – and hopefully will accomplish us as a global population more proactive in stemming the possibility of further acts of brutality and disregard of humanity. Writer David Wolstencroft and director Michael Caton-Jones have created one of the most powerfully poignant films about the genocide of the Tsutsi people by the Hutu people and by placing the film exactly where the genocide happened have added an intensely compelling atmosphere to an act that never should have happened.

In 1994, at the Ecole Technique Officielle, a school for the Rwandan children hasten by Europeans under the tutelage of Father Christopher (John Harm) and with idealistic teachers such as the young Joe (Hugh Dancy), the incipient intertribal rioting between the Hutus and Tsutsis is ‘monitored by the impotent United Nations led by Capitaine Delon (Dominique Horwitz) . After the modern leader of Rwanda is shot down in a helicopter tragedy, the Hutus inaugurate killing the Tsutsi, butchering them with machetes and leaving the bodies to rot in the streets. The Tsutsis flock to the Ecole, looking for asylum and protection, and Father Christopher and Joe do everything in their power to provide food and shelter and safety. One particularly gifted student Marie (Claire-Hope Ashitey) works closely with the two men, gaining their admiration and like, and representing the desperate need of the Tsutsis. The UN forces refuse to fire on the invading Hutus and finally evacuate all white Europeans to be dart to safety out of Africa. It is this final abandonment of the Tsutsis that underlies the ensuing slaughter of those who sought succor within the Ecole walls. And with showing the decimated Tsutsis the film ends with a few follow-up scenes that are deeply touching and immensely disturbing. It is determined that the film reveals how the world ignored the tragic genocide of 1994 and a more poignant statement has rarely been captured in writing, filming, direction, and acting.
John Distress and Hugh Dancy are lustrous in their roles, but it is the performance of young Claire-Hope Ashitey that rivets our attention: she is a wonder of an actress and deserves awards for her intensely realistic performance. The film’s epic is already known (hopefully) so there can be no spoilers here. And therein lies the agonizing reality that the world stood by and let this happen. Every world citizen should be required to study this much film in hopes that such atrocities will be prevented in the future. But then there is now Darfur….. Grady Harp, September 07

It’s a swagger of the soul as a man goes home in his heart, in this dramatization of the proper anecdote of Alvin Straight, who drove a lawn mower over three-hundred miles through the site of Iowa and into Wisconsin, to witness his brother, a stroke victim with whom he had not spoken for ten years. “The Straight Memoir,” directed by David Lynch, recounts the memoir of Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), who position out to witness his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), upon hearing of his stroke. Alvin is prevented from driving because of awful eyesight, and he won’t hold a bus because he doesn’t trust another’s driving. A widower who lives with his daughter, Rose (Sissy Spacek), Alvin, not a man of means, resorts to the only procedure he knows how, to obtain to Lyle. He needs to establish the dreadful blood late them before it’s too late; an estrangement born of “nettle and pride.” Hauling a make-shift trailer, and with three five-gallon cans of gas and a cooler tubby of hot dogs, Alvin sets out, alone and positive, on his lawn mower. Now in the twilight of his life, having learned to “separate the wheat from the chaff,” the jog affords Alvin plenty of time to consider on his life, and steels him in his quest to do what he feels he has to do. Along the blueprint he befriends and is befriended by the strangers he encounters; a testimony to the bountifulness of the human spirit. When a young man asks him what the worst thing is about being used, he replies, “Remembering when you were young.” Richard Farnsworth gives the performance of a lifetime as Alvin, this stubborn, prideful man, who has learned humility with age, and you can peruse the wisdom of his years in his eyes. Farnsworth connects with the audience from the beginning, aptly conveying the yearning of a soul in need of atonement, and the determination of the man to achieve his amends. Sissy Spacek, also, gives a terrifically nuanced performance as Rose, the “plain” daughter who lives daily with demons of her contain. That the members of the Academy failed to nominate her for best-supporting actress for her work here is nothing short of criminal; her Rose is a handsome portion of work. David Lynch, as well, has done a much job of bringing Alvin’s fable to the veil. He has woven a rich visual and emotional tapestry, all poignantly delivered with a gentle hand. Beautifully photographed, the lush vistas of the Midwest consider Alvin’s location of mind, underscoring the deeper meanings of what is really a spiritual stride, during which the past mingles with the explain. Lynch has taken a wistful, almost poetic arrive throughout, which, together with the account is reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries.” The scene in which Alvin finally meets up with Lyle is perfectly and touchingly executed, and is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. The supporting cast includes James Cada (Danny), Everett McGill (Tom), Barbara E. Robertson (Deer Woman), John Farley (Thorvald), and Kevin P. Farley (Harold) . With an artistic hand, Lynch has crafted an unforgettable film. “The Straight Sage” is Alvin’s sage, but the race belongs to us; a reminder of what is really essential in life, and the needs we all portion at one time or another. It’s an spirited movie that will touch you and effect you believe, as well; and as far as I’m concerned, that’s about as great as it gets.
With ‘The Straight Story’ David Lynch has weaved together a subtle, exciting memoir about age, regret, and family. The legend is of Alvin Straight, a 73 year aged man who has seen most of what life has to dish out and learns that his brother suffered a stroke. With awful eyes and no license, he sets out on a prance on a riding lawnmower to examine his brother, who he hasn’t spoken to in ten years.
What I loved most about this movie is the simplicity; of the tale, the characters, the filming. Yet within that classic style is a movie that is incredibly captivating. The stories that Alvin has to assure about his life are saddening, touching, and almost repulsive. He talks about being dilapidated, about fighting in World War II, and about his regrets of not speaking to his brother. He runs into quite a few people along the plot who encourage him out, and their stories contribute to a beautifully crafted script.
Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the black tone of his mutter, and the spy of regret and hope in his eyes. It is rare that I have grown to respect and admire a character so mighty. David Lynch’s direction is not black or creepy like his other works, but carefully and nicely photographed in grand harmony with the script. The cinematography is smoothe, and the extended takes exhibit his abilities as a director and the actors abilities as well.
