Movie Title: Samurai Banners Samurai Banners is available for streaming or downloading. |
I liked this movie a lot. It may not have the depth of a Kurosawa samurai fable. But the film’s director, Hiroshi Inagaki was no pace. Anyone who’s seen his other movies (Chushingura, Samurai Trilogy, honest to name a few) knows he’s very adept at handling sweeping dramas with immense casts of characters.
The Japanese title of this movie is Furinkazan which refers to the Kanji characters on the banner flown by the Takeda clan. It describes the military strategy of the clan’s leader, Shingen – swift as the wind (fu), tranquil as a forest (rin), aggressive like fire (ka), and stable like a mountain (zan) . I guess that’s a limited too considerable to keep in an English title!
The battle scenes in this movie are glowing salubrious. But I also liked the anecdote of unrequitted like attractive two of the main characters, Kansuke Yamamoto and Princess Yu. Toshiro Mifune plays Kansuke, an true historical figure who was a military strategist for the Takeda clan. Yoshiko Sakuma gives a racy performance as the attractive and sometimes feisty princess. Some Western viewers may get the movie’s worship chronicle a minute exclusive since there are no launch declarations of affection, and no hugging and kissing. This is a typical musty Japanese romance.

The movie reaches its climax at Kawanakajima, the scene of one of the most well-known battles in Japanese history. It was there that Kansuke made a gargantuan military blunder that nearly spelled doom for the Takeda clan.
If you like narrative war dramas with a miniature romance thrown in, then you might want to give this movie a try.
I am bit surprised to read the two previous reviews. The AnimEigo edition of Samurai Banners proves to be well presented and its subtitles with its different colors to look who’s talking proves to be one of the highlights. This movie got marvelous subtitles!! Maybe that reviewer who didn’t secure the subtitles should check his DVD player. He may have turned something off.

I enjoyed watching Samurai Banners despite of its 163 minutes or so length and the fact that its more of a samurai drama film with a war theme then anything else. Toshiro Mifune who have been considered as Japan’s verison of John Wayne is well cast in this movie as it followed the destiny of the Takeda clan through many campaigns. For those who may care, Takeda clan also featured in the film, Kagamusha. Mifune’s character, Yamamoto Kansuke (steady historical figure), joined the clan, and it helped lead it to many victories, gaining the trust and confidence of his lord and along the diagram, plunge in fancy with his lord’s concubine. The movie is well acted, scripted and directed although fans of bloody battles may have to leer else where.
Although the movie seem to dragged here and there but overall, despite of the length, the film moves with big deal of interest. The audience will be caught up in the going on of the Takeda clan and its struggles as they faced stronger foes as the movie goes on. For any Mifune fan, this movie should be on the mandatory choose list. Although Mifune’s fortune fell after he left his partnership with Kurosawa, this movie calm showed him at his best.

There are couple of consuming extras in this package. There is a one about character biographies which should be explore before the movie since it introduced the viewer to all the major characters of the movie. It probably be easier to followed the film. Second for more die-hard fan, there is Interactive Program Notes which gives you a elegant basic history lesson on period of warring warlords in Japan. It might be fascinating to read this before watching the film. It may succor understand the motivation leisurely some of the characters. Both features are ravishing short in duration.
Overall a elegant expedient film, not uninteresting and although bit pricy, a definitely worth the money.
(History minded viewer should read the book Kawanakajima 1553-64 by Stephen Turnbull for more in-depth historical observe at the background of this movie. Its share of the Osprey Campaign Series #130.)

Entertaining, fun and for those who enjoy stoner/bro-comedy, you’ll dig this DVD!![]()
Nick Swardson, the popular young comedian known for his roles as Terry Bernadino on “Reno 911!”, his film “Grandma’s Boy” (which he co-wrote) and appearances in films such as “Art School Confidential”, “The Benchwarmers”, “Blades of Glory”, “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” and more.
With the release of his Comedy Central DVD “Seriously, Who Farted?”, Swardson takes on the following topics of enjoying things much more when he’s drunk such as fast food, to topics of playing XBOX 360 with his buddies and cussing and people around the complex thinking he is shooting gay porn and weed. For the most part, a lot of the comedy is about having a good time and having fun with his friends, getting drunk and comedy that definitely targets the college and young adult crowd. The Austin, Texas crowd was very receptive and supportive and definitely Swardson fed off that that energy that night.
The following is the chapter listing for “Seriously, Who Farted?”"
* Intro
* Booze is Magic
* Gay?
* Weed is Dope
* Pot Brownies
* Old Lady Hand Job
* Ninja Job
* UFC
* Blades of Glory
* Monkeys
* Being Old People Part 2
VIDEO & AUDIO:
Video is featured in widescreen. Swardson’s comedy routine is well-lighted and although backgrounds are kept simple, the good thing thing is that the comedy does show quite a bit of audience reaction with good shots at the audience. Camera angles are either close up, body shot, at various positions towards the audience and way up high above the audience. Editing is well-done. Not dizzying at all. Camera angle stays on the comedian for most of the time.
Audio is featured in Dolby Digital. I opted to have my receiver set at stereo on all channels in order to have the audio all around me. But audio is understandable and clear. Audience laughter is also quite clear and doesn’t disturb Swardson’s performance.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
“Nick Swardson – Seriously, Who Farted?” comes with the following special features:
* Opening Act: Beardo & Dirt Nasty – (7:39) Known for their narcotic/drug/sex-inspired music videos on “Funny or Die”, Beardo & Dirt Nasty open Swardson’s comedy show by performing a rock and a hip hop song.
* 28 Drinks Later – (2:44) A trailer for a zombie film (or just a trailer) about Swardson and a few people who get drunk at a bar and awaken to find the whole city of Los Angeles turning to drunk zombies due to alcohol consumption.
* Nick Swardson: Timeless Comedian – (7:12) Frazier Smith interviews Nick Swardson about his comedy and showcases his stand-up comedy since the 1920′s.
* A Very Terry Christmas – (2:21) Featuring Swardson’s “Reno 911 gay, roller skating character Terry singing Christmas songs.
JUDGMENT CALL:
Nick Swardson’s comedy DVD “Seriously, Who Farted?” definitely showcases the comedian’s love for beer and alcohol. He loves it, repeats it and his comedy routine definitely works. Especially for the audience who go crazy when he talks about alcohol or drugs. College humor at its finest, I have to admit that I was so used to seeing Swardson on film and television that I never really seen his comedy routine. I knew he was a funny guy but I didn’t know he was a comedian.
But watching “Seriously, Who Farted?”, I couldn’t help but laugh repeatedly. His comedy is definitely understandable and can be easily appreciated by those familiar with the topics he discusses and the fact that he uses certain situations that reach a young crowd, discussions of XBOX 360 or Nintendo Wii is one thing, but for audiences who have been in a drunk stupor, are familiar with pot brownies, Asian massage parlors, UFC, ninjas and can laugh quite easily at monkeys, definitely will find Swardson’s comedy DVD to be quite fun and refreshing.
Sure, there are many drunk comedians but Swardson’s comedy is quite hilarious because he’s like the guy next door, the guy you went to college with, the guy you partied with… And I think what makes him so different from other comedians is the wacky roles he plays on films such as the gay skater in “Reno 911, the guy who lives at home and never has success with women in “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” or the Dance Dance Revolution gamer in “Grandma’s Boy”. Supporting roles that are just hilarious to watch and Swardson himself is just a funny comedian that will definitely make you laugh, pee in your pants or make you feel that you’re going to bust a gut. It’s that hilarious!
As for a Comedy Central DVD, you get the good camera angles but it would have been extra nice if this DVD release had been given the treatment of an audio CD (like Comedy Central’s Russell Peters DVD release) because this is the kind of comedy that you would want to listen to in long commutes.
Overall, Swardson’s “Seriously, Who Farted?” is a hilarious comedy DVD worth checking out!

In the Topple of 1994, ABC premiered what Entertainment Weekly would eventual hail as “the greatest cancelled television series of all time.” Airing for a total of 19-episodes, with the final installment airing February of 1995, “My So Called Life” not only jump-started the careers of Claire Danes and Jared Leto, but garnered young Danes a Golden Globe for her performance (she was the youngest actress to receive the honor) . Years after the demonstrate was cancelled ABC regretting their decision by trying to design lightening strike twice by producing similar series, yet ultimately known of them would garner the acclaim or magic of MSCL. Eventually TV Guide would call the series “the sixth best cult explain of all time.”

The premise of the explain is simple enough, but yet complex enough to develop it fresh. Premiering in 1994, factual at the emergence of the teen-soap genre MSCL was a breath of fresh-air. Unlike “Beverly Hills 90210″ and latter “Dawson’s Creek,” this series was grounded in reality. Instead of glorifying every teenage rite-of-passage for film, the series seems to gloss over these moments in favor of the emotional outburst they produce: great like trusty life. Many people don’t remembers every detail or their prom, first kiss, and first independent car trail? Yet they remember exactly how they felt, and MSCL capitalized on these moments.
The prove follows 14-year-old Angela as she tries to ultimately survive not only her freshman year of high school, but the highs (and lows) or first admire, as well as becoming her gain independent self – separated from the person she tried to be for other people in Middle School. High School is a turbulent time for anyone from the Jocks to the Brains to the Leadership to the Outsiders. Everyone has their ups and downs, fair like Angela. But she makes it harder on herself, and yet easier by befriending two outsiders, when she had always been fragment of the `in-crowd.’ The audience follows Angela’s transition from smooth wall-flower to her beginning to emerge from her cocoon sometime towards the slay of her first year of high school.

While on the outside the explain may seems like another “90210″/”The OC” teen-soap, but it really isn’t. This is a rich, emotional, and movie relationship-drama that once it gets your hooks into you, you cannot end watching. Unlike most shows of its genre its realistic and each of the major characters represents a person you probably knew in high school. Yet, they probably weren’t the most accepted kids. They were the kids you were friends with, hung out with, the ones you actually knew. It is a downright disgrace that ABC only allowed this series 19 episodes. More than almost any other expose I’ve ever watched I would have loved to gawk these character bloom into full-grown adults through their high school (and possibly college years) .
But what we are ultimately are given is unbiased this one 8-month snap-shot into these characters lives. But this could ultimately effect this exhibit the masterpiece that it really is. There was no room for it go downhill, no room for error. And forever it will be remembered. It has been years since my sister and I sat up all night long one weekend watching nasty copies of these episodes on VHS, and I cannot wait for Halloween, when I will finally have a chance to scrutinize them on DVD, almost anew.
This incredibly comprehensive box area includes all 19 episodes uncut (in their Fresh full-screen presentation) on 6 discs. The special features so far include: Interviews with Edward Zwick/Marshall Herskovitz/Winnie Holzman (creator/producers), Todd Holland/Jason Katism/Scott Winant (Directors), Wilson Cruz/Paul Dooley/Devon Gummersall (cast) ; Audio Commentaries on “the pilot,” “Life of Brian,” “So-Called Angels,” as well as additional episodes; Deleted Scenes; Promos’ Book with tridutes from Joss Whedon, Winnie Holzman, and Janeane Garofalo; and more.
“Okay, so maybe he’s bi. Who cares? His cousin can detached DRIVE.”
MSCL is bulky of best-line-ever-lines like that. It is the only point to that forever changed the device words arrange themselves in my head, which I guess kinda makes Holzman (et al) the Joyce of network television.
The series finale, ep 19, aired on my 12th birthday–meaning, this reveal has shaped half of my life. The fabulous thing about MSCL is how remarkable it grows up with you, even though, obviously, the episodes are the loyal same 19 episodes they always were. The writing and acting is so layered, complex and rich that the point to affords modern meanings and interpretations, even as its viewers “grow up.”
I owned the previous DVD box dwelling, and this one is a major improvement for several reasons:
1) Six episodes have commentary w/writers and actors, including Claire Danes in “Self-Esteem,” Devon Gummersall in “Life of Brian,” and (my approved) Wilson Cruz in “My So-Called Christmas.”
2) Extras DVD with cast and a making-of/retrospective featurette, and interviews w/Danes and Holzman.
3) Mountainous 36-pg book, lovingly made, with episode liner notes, song lyrics, letters, and other extraordinary memorabilia. Includes notes from Holzman and an essay by Janeane Garofalo.
4) Worthy better title screen/menu, both aestically and functionally. Each disc opens with a 20-sec renowned clip (“I’m in love/His name is Jordan Catalano…” for disc one; Angela’s “Can you please objective clarify geometry to me? ” plea to Brian for disc 4)
5) Noteworthy better, more streamlined packaging overall.
NOTE: I can’t comment on image quality between this DVD dwelling and the 2003 one. I watched both on an HDTV w/progressive scan DVD player, and both looked gorgeous to me. I have no notion if this DVD place is supposed to observe better or enhanced in some diagram from the previous version–basically, it looks and sounds huge.
Buy one for yourself and for everyone you know. Even if they’re 12. They’ll need it.
In closing, “Two words: Ti-no.”

Movie Title: Charade Charade is available for streaming or downloading. |
This is an exceptional DVD transfer of an exceptional movie. Criterion has done a aesthetic job of restoring Charade to its gleaming glory. The film is presented in its unique 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The print is sure, crisp, and radiant to view. You feel as if you can near out and touch the actors.
And what actors! The film features the dashing older version of Cary Grant and the youthful gamine Audrey Hepburn, with enough chemistry between them to ignite a fireworks factory. The station is a convoluted and flimsy trifle about icy war discover shenanigans, with cases of incorrect identity and episodes of grave disaster for Miss Audrey. But Cary, the classic first-rate guy in cad’s clothing, is there to establish the day. In addition to which he provides chaste romance that sizzles beneath the civility.
Audio commentary is provided by director Stanley Donen and screenwriter Peter Stone. While though-provoking and comical in spots, it does travel a bit over the length of the film. It may be better to check it out when you get something in the film that you would like to hear dissected. Otherwise, you’d be better to stick with the delicious, corny dialogue spoken in the dulcet tones of Cary and Audrey. The soundtrack music is to also to be savored, done up in classic ’60s examine movie style by the movie maestro Henry Mancini.

If you have nothing to do on a rainy day and believe a DVD player, this is the movie you want to have on hand to pop in the machine and issue you from care. It’s a keeper (and it comes in a keeper case!) .
I got this DVD for Christmas and I wasn’t disappointed. Stanley Donen, director of musicals such as “Singin’ In The Rain” starring Gene Kelly, brought together Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (who looks lustrous, as always) in this wonderfully-written fable about a Parisian widow (Hepburn) who is being pursued by three risky men (two of which are played by George Kennedy – an edifying “heavy” – and James Coburn at his most menacing) who want to catch out about a gargantuan sum of money her tiresome husband supposedly had. Grant is the wonderful stranger but eventually you initiate to wonder: is he working with these men? Does he want the money for himself? Or is he really the graceful, older man Audrey finds herself falling in treasure with?
Enhanced by a lush get by the unhurried Henry Mancini, photographed beautifully in Paris and containing satisfactory acting and deliciously wrong dialogue by writer Peter Stone, “Charade” is a film that should be in every serious DVD collection. Grant is older but better, like splendid wine, and Ms. Hepburn … well there have been millions of words stale to represent her and I can’t add to them other than to say the world lost a excellent talent at her death.
You’ll like “Charade” for a long, long time.

I have to admit, I was ready to abominate this movie. Having been a long-term fan of the Harry Potter books, a less-than-faithful adaptation could have cross it all for me. As it turns out, my fears were spurious.
Okay, some viewers will nitpick over discrepencies in characters’ appearances, but all the Notable stuff is here. The relationships between the characters are spot-on. The film also successfully convinces us that the magical goings-on are share of the protagonists’ everyday lives, whilst at the same time instilling a sense of wonder in the audience. This difficult balance is one of the main reasons the books are so successful.
Some of the child actors are a cramped wooden at times, but generally the all-British cast is top-notch. The rich characters of Rowling’s books have translated perfectly. Robbie Coltrane IS Hagrid. Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) have ample fun delivering most of the film’s best lines. Dan Radcliffe does well in the difficult task of communicating Harry’s thoughts, when the audience is unable to peep them written down. Deserved mention, too, for Maggie Smith’s McGonagall, Alan Rickman’s Snape and Tom Felton’s nasty-yet-vulnerable Draco Malfoy.

The quality of the production is satisfactory. The sets and costumes are unbelievable, and the attention to detail is breathtaking. The effects are expedient, sure highlights being Harry’s invisibility cover, and the Quidditch match (an adrenaline-pumping spectacle moral up there with anything Star Wars has to offer) .
In between the showpieces, director Chris Columbus remembers to let his audience engage a breather with quieter moments. Harry staring out of his bedroom window, and he and Ron opening their presents on Christmas morning, are endearingly down-to-earth. And the scenes of Harry in front of the Mirror of Erised brought a skedaddle to my glimpse (If you’ve read the book, you’ll know why) .
That’s not to say the movie is without its faults. In an attempt to please purists, ALL the subplots have been included (though pared down a enormous deal), when omitting a few entirely may have helped the pacing of the film. The opening half-hour may be difficult to consume for those who are exclusive with the book. A few of the magical artefacts seem rather more mechanical than mystical.

But these are all miniature niggles, really. The bottom line is that 152 minutes flee by as if it were half an hour. The only wish you have is that it were longer, and there can be no better imprint of a friendly film than that.
Like the director, Chris Columbus, I beget that since the book was so well done, the movie shouldn’t change anything famous. I needn’t go on about the actors, scenery, music, etc. It’s all very well done and extremely animated.
The movie itself gets 5 stars from me.

It is said that the role of Peter Venkman was originally written for John Belushi, but we’ll never know how he would have performed in the role. Fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Murray stepped into the role and ran away with the movie. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd fit into the anecdote like a glove in Ivan Reitman’s masterpiece, but Bill Murray steals his every scene – which means most of the movie – with a performance pudgy of dead-pan, ironic, world-weary, been-there-done-that hilariousness.
He has a sarcastic allege for every occasion, and the audience is the only one in on the joke every time.
When prospective girlfriend Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver, who gets a plum opportunity to exhibit off her comedic skills) gets possessed by an substandard demon, she is transformed into a slinky seductress. Bill Murray has approach over to her apartment and in his hilarious dead-pan manner lets the audience know that he recognizes all is not normal with Ms. Barrett. As hilarious and sarcastic as Venkman is, he’s at least a gentleman of sorts and doesn’t hold advantage of the position when the demon tries to seduce him.

The special effects don’t study like the CGI visions that have been on conceal for a couple of years (this was 1984) yet they’re piece of the fun. Even so, the special effects abet the sage rather than up-staging it, and when the movie was initially released I remember howling with the audience after the first special-effect ghost “attacks” Bill Murray and leaves him on the floor in a glistening mess.
“He SLIMED me!” Venkman yelled, and we laughed our heads off.

This disc is not dated by contemporary references – it’s impartial as hilarious today as it was in 1984, and it’ll probably be impartial as droll 100 years from now. The DVD comes with extras that add to the fun, and in the commentary tracks Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis present that “Ghostbusters” was an absolute highlight in all of their lives.
Mine too.
I have grown up with “Ghostbusters”, and was a fan of the cartoon series, the toys, and of course, the movies. I calm am, and unfortunately, I wasn’t all that delighted with Criterion’s laserdisc release of the film. The portray contained a lot of noise, and the matte lines were so visible, that even director Ivan Reitman was upset about it. That’s not the case here. With the release of “Ghostbusters” on DVD, digitally remastered and crammed to the gills with extras, including a live video commentary with Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis that looks great like “Mystery Science Theater 3000″, this makes the purpose of the invention of a DVD player positive! This DVD is righteous! It has everything I hoped for! They(Columbia/Tristar) really outdid themselves with this DVD. It includes numerous documentaries(instead of the usual 1 or 2), production photos, sketch artist drawings, and deleted scenes. Commenting on the deleted scenes, one of them was very exclusive, in which Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray play street bums instead of Venkman and Stantz, with Bill Murray doing his “Caddyshack” riff. It’s astounding that the cameras rolled for it, but it’s there. The only thing missing was the inclusion of a scene that found it’s procedure into the Criterion laserdisc, which followed the three ghostbusters leaving the college and Venkman commenting on how “he’s gonna gather the nobel prize”. Smooth, it also becomes intuitively definite why those scenes were sever once you view them. Anyway, if you have a DVD player and do not have this DVD, you are really missing out. It’s hard to contemplate why anyone would not want to add the “Ghostbusters” DVD to their collection. If you don’t like it, your as unimaginative as those ghosts running around.
