It seems like a ‘new, improved’ edition of “Gone With the Wind” has appeared every couple of years, offering the ‘ultimate’ in describe and sound reproduction, and extras. It can become expensive keeping up, and frustrating (considerable like buying a classic Disney DVD, when you know a more complete “Special Edition” will soon render your “First Time on Video” copy conventional), but the unique GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition most assuredly deserves a station in your collection.

First off, the describe and sound quality is improbable. Warner’s Ultra-Resolution process, which ‘locks’ the three Technicolor strips into proper alignment, provides a clarity and ‘crispness’ to the images that even the 1939 current print couldn’t enact. You’ll honestly maintain your TV is picking up HD, whether you’re HD-ready, or not! This carries over to the Dolby Digital-remastered sound, as well. All of the tell-tale pronounce and scratchiness of the opening credit title music, unexcited discernable in the last upgrade, is gone, replaced by a richness of tone that will give your home theater a proper workout. (Listen to the brass in this sequence, and you’ll leer what I’m talking about…)

The biggest selling point of this edition is, of course, the two discs of additional features offered, and these are, in general, apt. Beginning with the satisfactory “Making of a Sage” (narrated by Christopher Plummer), Disc Three offers moving overviews about the film, the fantastic restoration, footage from the 1939 Premiere (and the bittersweet 1961 Civil War Centennial reunion of Selznick, Leigh, and de Havilland), glimpses of Gable and Leigh with dubbed voices for the foreign-language versions, the international Prologue (tacked on to account for the Civil War to foreign audiences), and a 1940 MGM documentary on the “Weak South” (directed by Fred Zinneman) memorable today for it’s simplistic thought of the time, and stereotypical portrayal of blacks.

Disc Four is a mixed bag; the long-awaited reminiscences of Olivia de Havilland are more chatty than informative (with the 90-year-old actress more fervent in discussing her wardrobe than on-set tension…although a prank she pulled on Gable is droll), and the Clark Gable Profile is superficial (A&E’s biography of ‘The King’ is far apt) . Things improve, however, with the insightful, sympathetic TCM biography of Vivien Leigh (hosted by Jessica Lange), and a Improbable fragment devoted to brief bios of many of the GWTW supporting cast, narrated, again, by Christopher Plummer (although I wish the filmmakers would have included bios for Ward Bond, Victor Jory, Fred Crane, and George ‘Superman’ Reeves) .

All in all, the GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition isn’t perfect, but offers so remarkable terrific material that it is CERTAINLY the one to acquire!

I stale to consider that this Hollywood classic was for everyone. However, after reading nearly 300 reviews of the film, I consider that isn’t just anymore. This movie is NOT for you IF 1) you deem a movie must be as historically just as a history book, 2) you mediate a 1939 movie should assume the values of the 21st century, 3) your attention span is so short that you must only survey movies from 90-120 minutes in length, 4) you can only salvage politically moral films, particularly in terms of racial issues, 5) you are so Unimaginative as to contemplate widescreen movies were made before the 1950s (although to be glowing, Selznik originally intended to spend a special widescreen process for the so-called “burning of Atlanta” sequence but gave up on the expensive notion), 6) you can only accumulate computerized special effects as they appear in recent films, or 7) your notion of vast acting is to be found in slasher or teen films being made these days.

GWTW is NOT a documentary on the Civil War period. It is NOT a history of slavery in America. It is NOT a anecdote of perfect people behaving perfectly at all times.

It IS an adaptation of a unusual written by a Southern woman who, as a child, sat and listened to the stories the passe Confederate veterans told about the weak days before, during, and after THE war. It IS a adore memoir, probably about the novelist’s grandmother, which reflects the attitudes left over from that long-ago time.

To criticize this film for so many unrelated issues is droll. It stands on its merits as a masterful film that tells of bittersweet care for and lost fantasy. That it succeeds so well is a tribute to the actors and filmmakers of over sixty years ago.

“Quo Vadis”, based on the unusual by Henryk Sienkiewicz would have to be come the top of my list of favourite 1950′s religious narrative productions. Indeed “Legend” is the word to fittingly characterize this spacious MGM production that cost an astonishing 7 million dollars to build in 1950 and was the studio’s biggest money maker since “Gone With The Wind”. It has everything an myth movie lover could desire, the already stated glorious literary source, breathtaking sets (no computer generated effects here!), meticulously researched historical costumes, colossal crowds scenes and a lovely recreation of Pagan Rome at it’s height. The film boasts an astounding cast but towering over all of them is the tedious Peter Ustinov in his unforgettable performance as the deranged Nero. His interpretation of this contemptible Emperor who began the first concentrated persecution of the early Christians is peaceful the visual image for a lot of people, myself included, that first comes to mind when Nero’s name is mentioned. Already having been filmed a number of times in the quiet era and once again since this 1951 film, this is composed the definitive version of the account of the early Christian Church struggling to survive in Nero’s Rome after the ample fire.

With the advent of television in the early 1950′s Hollywood fought befriend with splashy, lavish productions that could not be matched by the flickering dim and white image of television in it’s infancy. “Quo Vadis”, lent itself perfectly for this purpose and an already shaky MGM place all of it’s resources into the filming of this clarify production. The myth centres around cocky Roman soldier Marcus Vinicius (Robert Taylor) who after three years of successful campaigning returns to savour the delights of Nero’s Rome. Detained at the villa of a retired Roman general Marcus falls for the simple charms of the general’s adapted daughter Lygia (Deborah Kerr) who unbeknown to Marcus is secretly a Christian. Seeing her worship for him but not concept the families notion in the care for of a single god and in loving your fellow man despite their background or hasten Marcus has Lygia taken to Rome and placed in Nero’s “House of Women” and seeks to originate her is occupy. Lygia escapes and is taken in by other believers but in the meanwhile Marcus finds himself the focus of the unwelcome and quite hazardous affections of the Empress Poppaea (Patricia Laffan) . Meanwhile Nero’s meglomania continues to grow and he develops a wild draw to rebuild Rome to his maintain glory and secretly sets the city on fire. The backlash from this act however sets Nero to fetch a scapegoat and thus begins the persecution of the Christian sect that are, to the amazement of the Romans, the disciples of a simple young carpenter from Galilee who was executed for his beliefs. Marcus finds Lygia however both are imprisoned together as Christian believers to become the sport of Nero’s festivities in the arena. The appearance of the Apostle Peter who has been called to Rome by Christ’s message gives the Christians the strength to endure their ordeals and Marcus and Lygia are married by him unprejudiced prior to his have matrydom on Vatican Hill. Nero however goes too far in his persecution and the mob turns on him resulting in his drop from power and suicide and the reins of power being taken over by the more level headed General Galba.

While “Quo Vadis”, in some areas is not always moral historically the faults are not glaring ones and it does give a smart portray of the growth of the early Christian movement and the persecution it endured which of course went on long after Nero’s death. First and foremost it is spellbinding and dramatic viewing and is the classic example of broken-down style movie making at its most lavish. The film is filled with unforgettable images, for example the immense crowd scenes during Marcus’ triumpiant entry into Rome, and the burning of the city by Nero which incredibly was done on both beefy sized and tiny sets. The icy blooded destruction of the Christians in Nero’s Circus of course is probably the most intelligent image in the film and is riverting in it’s terror and legal depiction of people being eaten by lions or being traditional as human torches. These scenes in “Quo Vadis”, have I bear never been bettered in depicting the insanity and brutality of Nero and his regime. Performances are uniformily blooming here. As the two lovers Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr are fair perfect as the two illmatched lovers from different worlds. Finlay Currie does a most inspirational fragment of work as Peter and special mention must go to Patricia Laffan who is perfect in a chilling performance as the irascible Empress Poppaea. Directed by MGM conventional Mervyn LeRoy, who was responsible for such diverse MGM productions as “Waterloo Bridge”, and “Blossoms in the Dust”, here he is serene objective as at home with this well-kept scale type of film and his directoral integrity is evident in every frame of this film. “Quo Vadis”, ended up being nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Record and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov.

I always net “Quo Vadis”, a inviting viewing experience generally around Easter time when my thoughts often go encourage to the earliest years of my religion. Liking the older style of movie making I can also enjoy the film on its noble technical achievements and massive historical recreation. This however never submerges my appreciation of its very simple message that all people need to admire each other despite their differences for the world to be a happier state. Win time soon to conception this legend production of “Quo Vadis”, you wont regret it.

This biblical fable has Peter Ustinov giving the definitive performance of the emperor Nero, in spite of the motion represent code. But then, it seems they were always relaxing that motion describe code support in the 40′s and 50′s as long as it was for a biblical narrative of some kind. In this case, you gape – although from a distance – lions carrying the limbs of dismembered Christians upon which they are feeding, along with all of the other insinuations of decadence demonstrate under Nero. Robert Taylor, who was normally a rather wooden actor IMHO, did a very genuine job in this one as a Roman soldier entranced by a Christian girl. If you didn’t know better you might consider this film was the work of Cecil B. DeMille, but instead the director was Mervyn Le Roy. Le Roy directed some of Warners fast-paced urban early sound films including Alice White’s musicals, Gold Diggers of Broadway, Cagney’s “Hard to Handle”, Edward G. Robinson’s “Small Caesar”, and “Three on a Match”. He also directed one of Robert Taylor’s other large performances in 1942′s “Johnny Alive To”, unbelievably not yet on DVD. In other words, Le Roy directed many crowd-pleasers. This might elaborate why this film got seven or eight Oscar nominations, but none for the director himself. He fair wasn’t considered pleasurable enough by the Academy to be “in the club” in spite of this genuine individual achievement.

Everyone knows the accepted story. Nero burns Rome to sure the plot for the shapely city he wants to invent, but the peasants are revolting – literally. He then blames the uncommon and unpopular but swiftly growing sect of the Christians for the burning, and begins feeding them to the lions for the amusement of the Romans. However, the Christians face death so bravely that Rome turns on Nero. Well, that’s the movie.

The facts are powerful more in argument. In an ragged city such as Rome, accidental fires that destroyed cities were celebrated. In fact Nero did lead a massive relief trouble after the fire, and fires unbiased as expansive broke out in Rome after Nero’s death. Some historians do have the Christians confessing to the crime. The fact is that the people did open to circulate rumors that Nero was at fault, and he was responsible for blaming th Christians for the fire to keep himself. He ordered to have them thrown to dogs, though, not lions, as in the film. However, like Showtime’s “The Tudors” one can somewhat overlook all of this historical jumping to conclusions and outright inaccuracy in the name of pleasing entertainment.

One of my all-time 10 popular movies (along with ALL ABOUT EVE, GONE WITH THE WIND, AUNTIE MAME, Jane Wyman’s THE BLUE Shroud, Garland’s A STAR IS BORN, CABARET, Lana Turner’s career highlight in MADAME X, 1939′s THE WOMEN, and 1953′s SO Tall) THIS is the only version of Enormous anyone should want to sustain in their collection of classics. This is the one that should have been an Academy Award champion…..and it is a sin that Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck not only didn’t gather 1953 Oscars, but were not even nominated. Ditto the astonishing performance of the greatest supporting actress in movie history, Thelma Ritter, as the indomitable Unsinkable Molly Brown. I will never forget the hysteria in Barbara Stanwyck’s hiss as she screamed “Norman! Norman!” when she realized her young son had slipped out of their life-boat to remain with his dad as the ship sank…..nor the tears in Clifton Webb’s eyes when he told the boy what pride he felt for him as the destroy drew approach. Please, don’t anyone vow me there was an ounce of reality in the blockbuster, phony ’97 version…..This simple dusky & white movie told the Sincere fable of the very rich and the very dreadful suddenly equalized in the face of danger. And I dare you not to smile as millionaire John Jacob Astor reassures his young, pregnant, second wife with the immortal words “My dear, God himself could not sink THIS ship”……and I defy you not to shout when musty Mrs. Strauss refuses to board a life-boat, saying “I’ve been with Mr. Strauss for more than fifty years….I don’t intend to leave him now.” This is a classic. This is THE classic. And these people, brilliantly portrayed by shimmering actors, become the ones who were really aboard the Great in 1912.

I enjoyed watching the James Cameron super-production of Vast released a few years ago. But after one viewing that was it. It’s the l950 version of Great, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb that keeps drawing me encourage through repeated viewings. These characters are the ones who can really connect with a viewer. Stanwyck brings a amazing down-to-earth quality that you instantly connect to. Webb is equally respectable as the dispicable fop who wants his kids to live like royal spoilt brats. My only complaint about this DVD are the two commentaries. Film critic Richard Shickel’s has to be heard to be believed for he literally sounds like he’s half-asleep. He starts off with: “Uh,and….uh, uh, and, uh, Barbara, uh, uh, Stanwyck, uh (long stay) is a fair, uh, uh, ehhhhhhh, ummmm, expedient actress.” The second one is slightly better because you can hear Audrey Dalton win those long-gone days on the 20th Century lot making Enormous. She’s witty, gripping, but unfortunately has about ten minutes on the commentary. You’re forced to listen to cameraman Michael Lonza’s relentless spill about miniatures, special effects and water tanks. Worse, is the “audio essay” by Silvia Stoddard, who tells us such though-provoking tidbits that “Large was, well, unbiased incredibly large!” Robert Wagner repeats over and over again “how lucky I was to be on a production like Enormous.” We’d all be considered lucky, Robert, but I honest wish you could have thrown some more color about individual scenes. Other than these two commentaries, the DVD restoration looks large!

I can’t add anything to the praise for this film. If you admire Disney films, this is considered one of the classics. I honest wish to briefly comment on the criticism of the lack of a widescreen version. The first widescreen film, The King and I, was released in 1956. Previous to this all films were elephantine veil. Peter Pan, released in 1953, and a safe many of the Disney classics are only available in burly camouflage aspect. This is not the Pan and Scan alteration of an recent Widescreen format. The contrivance this film is presented on the DVD is the modern aspect ratio; Nothing has been altered. I have seen this so called criticism leveled against many Hollywood classics such as Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Do a miniature research and you could be explain to luxuriate in these classics in the aspect ratio they were orginally presented in. Thats all I wish to say.

The children in the Darling family care for legend about Peter Pan. So naturally when he shows up one night looking for his missing shadow, they’re thrilled to go help with him to Never Land. There, they face Indians and “the world’s most renowned crook,” Captain Hook. Will they survive their adventures with the boy who never wants to grow up?

I have always had a fascination with this yarn. As a kid I remember checking the Disney report book version out of the library week after week. When I finally got to contemplate it, I was enthralled. There is unprejudiced something magical about the record. It’s partially the coming together of all the boyhood adventures in one region. Mermaids, Indians, and Pirates? What more could any boy want? And, of course, the ability to cruise. The “You can waft” sequence over London is one of my all time favorites. The whole movie really is appealing very well with a anecdote that movies like a flash from position to set with lots of humor to support everyone entertained and ravishing animation of the fanciful Never Land.

This special edition is worth tracking down. The represent (fresh beefy frame) is bright and the surround sound is very nice. Extras include a documentary on the making of the movie and a promotional theatrical featurette from the recent release. The “audio commentary” is modern. Hosted by Roy Disney, it consists of selections from interviews of the suppose talent, live action models, animators, and animation historians. While not your usual commentary, it’s arresting stuff and well worth a listen. Finally, there’s a love hunt game and DVD storybook for kids.

I will go angry if I hear one more critic say that Popeye is a mess, or one more person laugh and examine at me unfamiliar when I bring up this movie. This movie is a work of art. The songs are works of art. Shelley Duvall’s Olive Oil is a work of art. The lines Robin Williams mumbles so you have to gawk the movie ten times to hear them are a work of art. The plot is, the residence is. Did I say the music is? You’re going to explain me that Shelley Duval dancing about oddly on the deck singing he needs me, he needs me, isn’t fair absolutely perfect!? And that whole Fooey, fooey scene! I’m gonna do one of those twist up my arm punches to the next person that says this movie was a travesty for Williams or prove boating by Altman or anything else! This is a movie that has been watched tens and hundreds of times by those who possess it. Listless? I do not know of any other movie that can withstand repeated viewing like this one, nor that has been so reported by its most determined reviewers.

Our whole family has watched this film for hundreds of times, other reviewers also mention similar numbers.

1- The script is unbelievable: Popeye (Williams) is blabbering all the time (as well as other chartacters) : Somebody is always saying something, and each time we view the movie again, we gain modern jokes, and in fine style.

We know those who produced the film did not rip-us off. Many movies that made powerful better at the box office cannot stand to be viewed twice.

2- The characters are a trusty Popeye movie reach to life: Every one is the staunch cartoon near to life, the intention you have them stored in your imagination. This is a delight not available in any similar movie.

3- Any person seeking to peep a Popeye movie is not enthusiastic in the issues discussed by the critics… near on guys, are they reviewing Gone With The Wind?

This is a perfect Popeye movie; and if that’s what you want you will gape it at least 10 times… guaranteed.

Too poor about the reviews; I even saw an interview with Robin Williams and let me disclose you, when this film was mentioned he was really “embarrassed”. We cherish his style and comedy in his other movies but we do not agree with him panicked attitude: We gain this is one of his best films.

In 1939 when this movie was released, it faced stiff competition at the Academy Awards from ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Nominated for an Academy Award in 1939, it didn’t bag. But those who care for this film will always have that is should have. By 1939, the Fleischer Studios had been crafting the finest animation around — they actually produced the first rotund length racy movie (though Disney gets the credit) . This is the very best that the Fleischer Studios ever produced. Its characters are every bit as rich and deep as the very best Disney, Bluth or Spielberg-Katzenberg efforts. (Anyone who hears the classic line: “There’s a giant on the beach!” — will never forget it!) For years, I have wanted to find my hands on this and remaster this movie digitally. (I do effects and compositing for a living.) It’s fantastic to examine that someone who loves this movie has given it the care and respect it deserves. Max Fleischer was a sheer genius, whose work includes the recent Betty Boop, Popeye, the enthralling Superman — and his bear contributions to film include techniques of effects production that are unexcited obsolete today. He was a master of his craft who, sadly, has exiguous recognition outside artists and animators. I have bought many copies of this over the years — usually in versions so poorly recorded and transfered that they are pitiful indicators of the Fleischer talent — and yet, everyone I’ve given it to, loves the movie. My personal gratitude to Winfield Hoskins, Seymour Kneitel and Thomas Reich for your tender care in restoring such a improbable movie. Thank you. It is truly long overdue and it is a case of giving honor to whom honor is due. This belongs accurate alongside the best Disney, tucked legal on the shelf alongside Bluth’s best — and when the young and the young at heart ask “What is this? ” — play it. My big daugther plays it regularly and never tires of it and always quites “There’s a giant on the beach” — and she laughs. This movie is simply pure magic — breathtaking! Many of you will leer it and will suddenly remember seeing this long ago and your eyes will light up, objective as many who I have bought it for, have said to me: “I saw this years ago and have never known what it was. I adore this!” And they always smile. And I always assume more copies. The soul of a factual artist lives in this movie. And this is the best edition of it that you will collect. Assume it…

First let me say that I am not a broad fan of Winstar products, but they have done the restoration job on this title that they promised. The 60th Anniversary Edition image is so arresting and pure that I got rid of my Republic Laserdisc that came from their studio masters. As typical with Winstar, they created a fresh stereo soundtrack, but THEY HAVE INCLUDED THE New MONO TRACK! I would suggest selecting the unique mono track, their stereo track is distracting.
