I reflect that when you bewitch the longest Harry Potter book and turn it into the shortest Harry Potter film, that a colossal number of complaints by fans as to what has been prick will be inevitable after they peer “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Not that this means that the legions of fans will be bitterly disappointed by the film version, but rather that there will be regrets over not getting to study current scenes on the cloak. For example, Quidditch is completely out of the film, denying Ron of his best moments in the sun (begin singing “Weasley is our king”) . So do not be surprised when your mind keeps shifting to what has been slit and distracting you from time to time while watching this summer’s latest blockbuster.

When last we left our hero, Harry fell victim to a trap to bring befriend Lord Voldermort, which cost Cedric Diggory his life. The Ministry of Magic wants things hushed up, but Dumbledore tells the students at Hogwarts that Diggory was murdered and Lord Voldermort murdered him. As this fifth film opens Harry and his noxious cousin Dudley are attacked by Dementors. Harry uses his wand to defend them and is summarily expelled from Hogwarts for using magic in front of a muggle. The pleasurable news is that Harry gets reinstated, but the unpleasant news is that the Ministry of Magic uses the opportunity to appoint Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary at the Ministry, as the school’s fresh Defense Against the Sad Arts professor. However, Umbridge teaches only the theory and not the practice because she insists Harry is a liar and there is nothing the students need to learn to defend themselves from. Then things regain progressively worse.

“The Order of the Phoenix” was the most maddening book to read, not because it was the longest, but because I disapprove Dolores Umbridge. As far as I am concerned she makes Voldermort gawk sterling, because he knows he is atrocious, putrid, unpleasant, mean and defective inside, while Umbridge thinks the ends explain the means. She is puritanical, sadistic and hypocritical. If there were not going to be children reading this review I would advise you what I really consider of her. Suffice it to say, she makes me sick and I do not even recall pleasure in loving to disfavor her, which is why my only requirement going into the film is that the Weasley Twins fetch their moment of glory when they become the disloyal opposition to the unique order at Hogwarts.

Daniel Radcliffe continues to have the tote the heavy load in these films as Harry, with Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley being reduced more and more often to reaction shots while Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger remains the Mistress of Exposition in these films. Alan Rickman as Snape remains pitch perfect casting and Gary Oldman as Sirius Sad is also a joy to glance, but I discovered in this film that I really like Michael Gambon’s performance as Dumbledore, mainly because he always plays up the character’s intelligence and I net I rob his interpretation to that of the gradual Richard Harris, forgive my heresy. Imelda Staunton does not perceive as powerful like a toad as Umbridge does in the book, but she captures the character’s detestability from open to enact. We are always painfully aware how hazardous she is, whether she smiles or not. Also, Evanna Lynch steals more scenes as Luna Lovegood than Katie Leung does as Cho Chang, and it is certainly spirited to gaze Neville (Matthew Lewis) towering over everybody, with Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) in the soundless but strong role for the pivotal sextet.

After seeing this film I raced home and got out my copy of the book and starting cataloguing things that had been gash. Such comparisons are, as I suggested up top, inevitable for anyone who has read the book. At this point what I missed the most were some of the conversations between Maggie Smith’s Professor McGonagall and Umbridge where Minerva verbally flaws the Inquisitor. The omission that I am focusing on the most is the whole bit about why Neville’s family was a target of Voldermort (I agree with Harry: always say his name and thereby gash its power), since that suggests implications for what will happen in the final book, which gets released in unbiased ten more days. I also would have liked to have seen an over reaction to Harry discovering his father bullied Snape at Hogwarts. My celebrated section ends up being the impressive wizard’s duel between Voldermort and Dumbledore. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg does a gracious job of whittling down Rowling’s book and director David Yates does a competent job, but fans will simply want more. Also, we know what happens in the next book and all of the terrible things that happen in this film cannot attend but seem inconsequential in comparison. Plus, fans will be distracted by mining this film for clues as to what will happen in the last book.

I care for Harry Potter, OK? So before you freak out, let me catch that out of the scheme. The book version “Order of the Phoenix” was oustanding. I also believe that previous directors have done radiant edifying to gargantuan jobs of translating the books to film (though I must say things went a itsy-bitsy downhill once Chris Columbus left.)

All that being said, here’s the kicker:

The movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” played like a Cliff’s Notes adaptation of the book.

It lopped off a lot of the charm and romance and heartfelt pathos of the book— as well as a lot of the pure creative touches— in order to obtain the main arc of the epic down. On top of that, it made “adaptations” to the book in order to collect the legend provocative along— yet all these “compromises” were actually worse than what JK Rowling originally wrote!

Don’t have me? Here is only SOME of what is rotten with this movie:

–Poor devlopment of the Harry/Cho Chang arc (The kiss is about all you glean. No true feeling slow it at all. No devlopement of Harry’s crush. No final crash up argument on Valentine’s Day.)

–Making Cho into an contemptible snitch (which is why she and Harry broke up in the movie.) In the movie SHE is the one who betrays Harry. Tiring,.

–No hospital scenes. No meeting of Neville’s parents.

–Perfunctory explanation of Grimmaud Plot

–Perfunctory development of Occlumency

–Harry gets to hear the prophecy while standing in the Department of Mysteries rather than later with Dumbledore. On top of this, he gets to hear the prophecy objective by holding it in his hand. That makes no logical sense at all!

–The Department of Mysteries itself is compressed down into one room (the room with the prophecies.) All the frigid rooms (with the blue lights, the 12 doors, the clocks, the brains, and so on) are all impartial ignored. Those were such spacious inventions by JK Rowling–perhaps some of the most creative stuff in all the books– that I can’t possess they fair slit them!

–The room with the arch is made into a really slow location.

–The battle scene is really short and rather listless.

–Snape’s memory of being tortured by James Potter and his argument with Lily Potter is compressed into literally a total of 4 seconds of film. That scence is so PIVOTAL to the rest of the book series that I can’t enjoy they got away with not fully developing the scene.

On top of all these dwelling issues, the WORST section about this movie is that there was really no FEELING in it. The whole range of emotional arcs that are so well-developed in the book are done absolutely terribly in the movie. Yeah, Sirius dies. In the book, it is a devatating moment. In the movie, it’s like “Oh, well.” Harry, Ron and Hermione don’t have many moments together. There is no laughing in the movie. We don’t fetch to feel pathos for Neville because his parents are insane. We don’t accumulate to feel the gratefulness of the Weasleys when Harry saves Mr Weasley. There are no lighthearted moments. Almost every scene except one or two that could have developed the emotional attachment we feel to the characters has been summarily excluded.

Like one other reviewer said: The movie is too short, yet it feels too long.

That is, sorry to say, a perfect description of a hack job.

I am quite disappointed.

Pretty disappointing selection. First of all I judge they could have had more episodes with this package. Here’s what I reflect of what they have chosen-

White Light (Parts 1 & 2) – When this episode came out it was a major episode because it introduced the White Ranger so it is quite understandable that it would be chosen for this selection.

Countdown To Destruction (Parts 1 & 2) – Simply the main reason to capture this DVD. It is the best two Power Rangers episodes ever made. It is quite legend in scope and featured the pivotal destruction of Zordon who originated the Power Rangers.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Best of the Power Rangers – The Ultimate Rangers! Click Here

To The Tenth Power- Mammoth choice again and one of the best crossover events in Power Rangers.

Trakeena’s Revenge (Parts 1 & 2) – Lightspeed Rescue was probably the weakest Power Rangers series, and this is one of the best episodes of that series. Nice to peer a crossover with the Lost Galaxy Power Rangers but it fair doesn’t live up to its potential. Detached, not a poor choice.

Forever Red- The unbelievable episode that featured various Red Rangers teaming up together.

Now as you can observe I’ve radiant worthy complimented every episode on the DVD. But my scrape isn’t with the episodes they have, it’s with what they don’t have. There also should have been an episode from each series- where are Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers Time Force? Another plus would have been to have the very first episode of Ninja Storm. They call this the Best of the Power Rangers, yet they forget to include some of the best episodes such as Ninja Quest (Parts 1, 2, 3 & 4) from Worthy Morphin’ Power Rangers, as well as the final four episodes of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and the opening and final episodes of Power Rangers Time Force. That’s why I’m disappointed with this DVD.

It probably won’t happen, but here’s hoping they have a volume 2, or originate to bring out the entire series in boxsets.

My notion as to why these episodes were picked:

White Light pt. 1 & 2-

Countdown to Destruction pt. 1 & 2-
This one is SOOOOOOOOO obviouse! This episode was the sizable finale of not only Power Rangers in Status, but, the 6 year era of Zordon, 6 years worth of villains, all the active rangers, and most importanly, Zordon. He was the rangers’ mentor for 6 years and was the greatest mentor they will ever have. He was trapped long ago in a Time Warp by Rita Repulsa. Now, all the UAOE is attacking to invade the universe for Gloomy Spector. Who was chosen to attack earth, why, non other than Astronema, Andros’s long lost sister, brainwashed and turned foul. Forever Red-
This episode has been quoted by many fans as the greatest episode ever! It features the return of all red rangers!!!, The Machine Empire, Serpentura, Bulk and Skull, Alpha, The Astro Megaship, as well as many past references! This hard boiled British film noir about a croupier in a London casino is destined to become a classic. With his slicked-back dim hair and striking top-notch looks, Clive Owen brings a frosty, cynical, self-confident elegance to his role as Jack Manfred, a croupier (dealer) in a London casino. He’s writing a new and has been recommended to the job by his father, a South African gambler, who has raised Jack to know all the tricks of the trade. Jack has nothing but contempt for the gamblers who reach to the casino to lose each night and expresses his hatred for cheaters. He, himself, takes pride in the fact that he never gambles, but as the space moves forward, the audience watches him rationalize his fill actions in regard to his relationships which pull him deeper and deeper into his have kind of gamble.

Three women play key roles in his life. There is his live-in girlfriend (Gina McKee) who works as a store detective. There is a fellow dealer (Kate Hardie an ex-prostitute and druggie. And, most importantly, there is Alex Kingston (the actress who plays Dr. Corday on ER) in the role as the femme fatale. There is intrigue, mystery, action, a substantial spot and — most of all — a incredible character scrutinize as Jack starts to study himself as a character in his gain current and shares his acquire internal monologue through the discrete and effective employ of voiceovers. Yes. As in other films of this type there are a few details of the site that are never fully explained. And some of the British dialogue was a minute too hasty for my American ears. But the casino scenes sparkled, romantic scenes eluded sexual chemistry, and somehow I found myself identifying with Jack and all the workings of his mind. And, like other films in this genre, nothing is quite what it seems. Highly recommended.

I’ve been looking for a commerically available Site 1 version of Croupier for quite some time now. I was so enraged to glimpse that its being re-released that I had to check other sources to design obvious its not a glitch. But, yes indeed, Croupier is scheduled to be re-released March 9, 2004!

As for the film itself, this film introduced Americans to Clive Owen. It opened the doors for Clive’s modern film roles in the BMW Films “The Hire,” “Gosford Park,” “Bourne Identity,” “Beyond Borders” and upcoming starring role in “King Authur” (not to mention the James Bond rumors. I’ve also heard proper things about the Brit TV miniseries “Second Peep.”) Don’t inquire a Hollywood thriller here. This novel update of the film noir genre is shot to construct disconnect and confusion, and the characters are gritty and flawed. The film centers around Jack Manfred, a struggling-writer-turned-card-dealer. Jack moves through his life like a ghost, calm and disinterested in the events of his enjoy life. Alex Kingston’s character Jani de Villiers enters his life and adds color to Jack’s shaded world. Jani is the femme fatale to Jack’s postmodern hard-boiled hero, but I treasure that Jack and Jani’s relationship does not do in the contrivance you would request. Overall, an savory film for indie film lovers and a must for Clive Owen fans.

I’ve seen my piece of documentaries, and I’ve seen a few that have dealt with disability. “Murderball” easily eclipses them all.

Too often people with disabilites gain thrust into the role of flawless inspirations, this principle has held lawful across both fictional and non-fictional films alike. It was because of this trend that I approached “Murderball” with cautious optimism.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Murderball! Click Here

It was very surprising indeed when “Murderball” was in fact a genuinely uplifting and challenging film,a film that dared to really demonstrate its subjects complete with flaws. Two other disability-related documentaries I’ve seen are “Rolling” and “King Gimp” Both are probably extremely spirited to an able-bodied audience, but speaking as someone who is in a wheelchair, some of the moments in those films were downright horrifying and depressing. For example in “Rolling”, a woman falls out of bed while dressing herself and videotapes her barely censored nude rescue by an able-bodied friend and her husband. Able-bodied audences would say, “what grit and determination” I sat there and prayed that would never happen to me. “King Gimp” profiles a supremely talented artist and parts of his record are piquant especially to someone like myself who wants to have a career in the arts. Yet, it too uncomfortable me because mighty of the film concerns the subject’s unrequited like for a female caregiver. He laments that he will never accept anyone.

“Murderball” on the other hand avoids those pitfalls and showcases some of the nastiest, (…) ever to hit the hide and even though I most certainly do not fit into that category and wouldn’t be caught humdrum playing the titular sport I enjoyed every cramped of it. All of the people in this film have a level of independence that for the moment I can only dream of, and they are mighty more impaired than I am in positive respects. So seeing them doing something they fancy, and quite a few of them FINDING fancy is absolutely, unadulteratedly racy. It is the first documentary I’ve seen that left me jubilant through the waste credits.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Murderball! Click Here

“Murderball” is ostensibly about quadriplegic wheelchair rugby and there are some truly thrilling scenes of play between archrivals the USA and Canada…to be determined.

But what “Murderball” is really about is the undeniable, unstoppable, fire-in-the-belly will to live and more specifically the drive to overcome adversity: both of spirit and of body.

Athletes Ticket Zupan, Joe Soares, etc. all reveal, really inhabit such a definite, go-for-broke bewitch on life and living that you cannot serve but be embarrassed when you launch to consider of your piddly problems.

One of the things a Documentary should do is voice and mumble and “Murderball” has those two topics covered—no jam. But “Murderball” also gives you Hope and that is a quality to which most other films can only aspire.

Sometimes I am blithely unobservant. Arriving at the decision to peruse Rose Red based on one of those AI recommendation machines, I never noticed that it was 1) by Stephen King, and 2) the four hour version of a television special. In retrospect, I’m really not certain why I decided to watch it, since terrorized house dismay movies generally don’t grab me. But I did, and after a moment of afraid realization discovered that I was having fun watching it.

The narrative isn’t anything spectacularly unique. Joyce Reardon (Nancy Travis), a parapsychology teacher, bets her entire career on the possibility of finding measurable psychic phenomena at an eerie broken-down mansion (Rose Red) in the heart of Seattle. Said mansion has a long history of eating people, and Reardon’s thought is to invite a selection of psychics to exhaust a weekend at the house in order to wake it from a dormant spot. Her ace in the hole is Annie Wheaton (Kimberly Brown), an autistic 15 year passe who is an industrial strength tele-everything.

Sure enough, the house wakes up, fingers secure lopped off, people drown, and a whole host of equally atrocious things open to happen. As the mysteries about the house commence to unravel, things accumulate even worse and it becomes distinct that Rose Red has no contrivance of letting anyone go. From that point on it is a pure battle for survival.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rose Red! Click Here

The house is the loyal star of the film. It is spacious, plump of irregular rooms and interconnected hallways, and has a knack for rebuilding and changing itself. CBS went all out to obtain it a spooky masterpiece, and they did a excellent job of it. It’s the kind of nightmare that you really would like to visit. Believe of it as a vexed theme park and you have the atmosphere.

Acting varies, but is generally decent. I’m not definite about Nancy Travis though. She makes Joyce on of those sublimely irritating characters that you launch out sympathizing with and wind up hoping she gets his with an axe. No such luck. Julian Sands and Matt Ross are gleaming and everyone else has moments of greatness.

So I likes the indicate after all. Since it’s made for TV, don’t request a lot of gore or out and out violence. The film starts a bit slowly, but the upside of that is that king spends as considerable time on character development as he does on position twists. While this isn’t a masterpiece, it’s worth watching on a sluggish Saturday afternoon with buckets of popcorn.

Rose Red, a spectacular miniseries written by horror-master Stephen King and directed by Craig Baxley (Storm of the Century), was shown on ABC in slack January 2002. Many reviewers in the media were not exactly angry about this film. I did not seek it when it first aired, though I deeply wished to. Eventually, I bought the DVD; I was ready to scrutinize it. I enjoyed it throughly.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rose Red! Click Here

I believe Nancy Travis’ role as Joyce Reardon was a cramped overdone, however. (Maybe Ms. Travis should honest stick to Comedy.) I was hypnotized by Kimberly J. Brown’s performance as Annie Wheaton, a autistic telepath. I also could not abet but admire Julian Sands’ portrayal as the incredibly witty, incredibly psychic Slit Hardaway. The accumulate is haunting and gorgeous, and it makes me wish there was a CD available that had that on it (10 points go to Gary Chang!) .

As for the movie, I reflect that the beginning characterization is something that was famous, and it was a nice switch from the usuaul gore fest you in Horrors today. Bravo, Stephen. The special effects are safe. Flying stones, building houses, close-ups that earn your heart going, ghosts that get you tremulous of what may be sleeping on the other side of your bed. Not to mention the comely animatronics made for the role of Ellen Rimbauer. Some people have found it chillingly scary, but I didn’t win it all that unpleasant (And I’m only 13!) .

Now for the situation. The basic fable is distinguished like Shirley Jackson’s THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. (Or was it Hell House? ) “Some Houses Are Born Poor”. You betcha. This house, which was built in the behind 1800s/early 1900s, builds on to itself (To understand more about the history of Rose Red, I highly suggest the page-turner THE DIARY OF ELLEN RIMBAUER: MY LIFE AT ROSE RED) . So, crazy Joyce Reardon, obsessed with Rose Red, leads a team of psychics into Rose Red to wake up the supposed “tiresome cell”. Soon, the house’s unimaginative spirits, who were never really gone, commence to reek havoc and people commence disappearing. Everything leads up to dim secrets revealed and a climatic ending that is predictable.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rose Red! Click Here

The reason why I say FOUR STARS, and not five, is that by the time you reach to Disk Two of the DVD, after the “statue incident” (You’ll know what I mean when you find there), you inaugurate wondering when this movie will waste. Though every single fragment is significant in my plan, I own it does earn slightly long-winded. The Special Effects are quite fabulous, however.

As for the Special Features of the DVD, there isn’t a whole lot. There’s fresh storyboard designs, a 50 diminutive long documentary on the making of ROSE RED, a groundless documentary on Ellen’s diary (I contemplate that was supremely creative), artwork, a trailer and Commentary. It does give a in-depth discover at everything, but it didn’t find me exicted or anything.

All in all, I gain it is a sizable movie to eye when you have an initiate four hours (insert snicker here) . Kudos to King and Baxley for a job well done.

Rowan Atkinson was comical as Mr. Bean, but he was downright hilarious as the Dusky Adder. He had such a talent for playing the sharp-tongued rogue I’ll never figure out why he decided to initiate doing comedy in which he hardly spoke. The premise of this British comedy series is that the central character, “The Dark Adder”, shows up at different points in history in various incarnations distorting historical events and poking fun at various British historical figures and situations along the diagram.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Black Adder Remastered: The Ultimate Edition! Click Here

Lots of people don’t like Sad Adder I, in which the title character, Edmund, is the younger son of a brutish man consumed with thoughts of war who actually becomes king of England through Edmund’s gain bungling – he arrives slow for the Battle of Bosworth Field and winds up chopping off the head of Richard III, thus saving the life of Henry Tudor. Throughout this first season he plays the buffoon, often having the expression of a deer caught in the headlights. This is the only season in which the Unlit Adder takes on the persona of a ancient effeminate person. Especially comic is Edmund’s mother who is a righteous ample woman sitting around doing embroidery and indifferently waiting for the next marauding army to pass through.

The second season takes location early during the reign of Elizabeth I, with the Dim Adder confident, shapely, and even a accepted at court. A young Amanda Richardson plays the role of Elizabeth I, who comes across as Betty Boop, unbiased not as radiant. Although more cunning in this season, Gloomy Adder peaceful comes up the loser in unbiased about every episode. My well-liked is “Bells”, in which Blackadder finds his original servant, Bob, curiously generous company. Terrorized for his reputation at court, Blackadder searches for a “cure” – which of course involves leeches, until Bob conveniently reveals that she is in fact a girl called Kate. Their wedding is disrupted by the profane Lord Flashheart, who, although he is the best man, winds up stealing the bride.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Black Adder Remastered: The Ultimate Edition! Click Here

The third season takes location in the eighteenth century during the reign of George III, and will be a popular of all fans of “House, M.D.” due to the presence of a young Hugh Laurie. Here, Dim Adder plays the manservant of the Prince Regent, George, played by Hugh Laurie. George is the dim-witted target of Dark Adder’s many schemes to enrich himself by taking advantage of his cushy situation in George’s household, and this often means having to attach the Prince Regent’s pension and plot in the kingdom, which is largely controlled by Parliament.

The fourth season takes position during World War I, with Edmund Blackadder as a captain in the British army whose company is trapped in one of the trenches that gave everyone in Europe such a distaste for warfare between the two world wars. Blackadder’s aim in this season is to cease alive by staying in that trench until the war ends. His stunts include shooting a carrier pigeon when it arrives with orders to near, and joining the Royal Flying Corp – “the twenty minuters”. Unfortunately, the name comes from how long they are expected to live once in the air, not how remarkable time they work each day, as Blackadder had originally view.

This exhibit has several sharp situation devices. First, most of the main characters present up in different periods of time with the same name but different roles. Hugh Laurie is always “George”, Tony Robinson is always “Baldrick”, Stephen Fry is always “Melchett”, and Tim McInnerny is always “Percy”. Since each season was shot in alternate years – (1983, 1985, 1987, 1989) – the cast must have been having a terrific time in order for them to be regathered after such long intervals in order to execute filming this series possible. Secondly, everyone in the cast, including the Dusky Adder, always dies in the final episode of each season. It is somewhat like the South Park stunt of Kenny being killed at the ruin of every reveal only to reappear in the next episode as though nothing had happened.

Do tag that there are only six episodes per season. If you liked “Red Dwarf” or “Fawlty Towers”, you’ll probably like this series too.

As for extra features, disc five contains the specials. The Cavalier Years has Stephen Fry as King Charles and Warren Clarke as Oliver Cromwell. There is also Blackadder’s Christmas Carol and Succor and Forth. Christmas Carol is handsome comical, but I’ve never cared for Benefit and Forth.

Disc six contains the documentary Blackadder Rides Again, a 90-minute special with the behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage from the fourth season included. There’s also a stare assist at the costumes archaic in Costumes Revisited, along with extended interviews and audio commentaries with the key actors. As for the audio commentaries, Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Ben Elton, Richard Curtis, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny and producer John Lloyd have all contributed to these.

You have to give the Blackadder family credit — they’re tenacious. “Shadowy Adder – The Complete Collector’s Area” chronicles this unusual, sardonic family’s presence throughout the greatest eras of British history. The first season stumbles somewhat, but the following seasons are intellectual — sardonic, kooky, and sometimes rather sick.

On the day of the Battle of Bosworth Field, the Duke of York (Brian Blessed) and his son Harry (Robert East) accompanied the king (Peter Cook) into battle. His second son Edmund (Atkinson) hopes to reach along, but he oversleeps — and when he arrives, he accidentally kills the king, and Edmund’s his father is made king. He dubs himself the “Dusky Adder” and decides to one day become king of England… too awful nobody likes him.

He’s followed by a string of descendents through the ages — all more acid-tongued and vivid than he, or anyone else around them. And they’re always accompanied by a Baldrick. That includes Lord Edmund Blackadder, the approved of the demented queen Bess (Miranda Richardson) ; Edmund Blackadder Esq., valet and butler to the half-witted Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie) ; and Captain Blackadder, a soldier in World War I who spends his time trying to collect out of it.

These unlucky Blackadders glean themselves dealing with demented Puritans, hosting bawdy drinking parties, crazed bishops, even crazier princes, giant turnips, the Red Baron, inch musical acts, Spaniard inquisitors, and almost being shot for eating a carrier pigeon. Startlingly, the final season — although another is in the planning stages — ends on a very poignant brand.

But there is an upbeat ending overall — the final episode introduces us to the modern-day Blackadder, a sharp-tongued aristocrat dining with the modern-day descendents of Prince George, Queen Elizabeth, Melchett and Darling. Not to mention Baldrick in a truly horrifying porno apron.

Blackadder reveals that using da Vinci’s plans, Baldrick has constructed a time machine, and bets £30,000 that he can bring relieve historical items. It’s actually an interpret scam… until the machine works, and Baldrick and Blackadder net themselves spinning helplessly through time, with no view how to gather home. And in a couple of side-stories, Ebenezer Blackadder discovers how his salubrious cheery attitude will affect his descendents; and the last two Loyalists to King Charles (in other words, Baldrick and Blackadder) deal with the impending execution of the king ( “No, it’s not! It’s a expansive pumpkin with a pathetic moustache drawn on it!”) .

The series starts off a puny weakly — the first season is comical, but not outrageously so, and Prince Edmund is the incompetant twerp rather than Baldrick or Percy. But things blossom with the arrival of a fresh writer in “Blackadder II,” and sets the tone for the rest of the series: a gleaming, bitter man who’s constantly surrounded by nincompoops.

There are one or two dud episodes, but the majority of them shine with comical genius, from the kookily childish Queen Elizabeth (“Who’s Queen? “) to Baldrick’s rancid boxers killing the dinosaurs. Atkinson gets most of the respectable lines (“He’s the most over-rated human being since Judas Iscariot won the AD31 Best Disciple Competition”) but the rest of the cast usually gets in some tremendous ones too (“A total pig-headed unwillingness to recognize facts in the face will witness us through!”) .

Atkinson, of course, rules the whole series a series of acid-tongued Blackadders who have influence but no power, and Robinson is gargantuan as the spoiled servant who always has a cunning understanding. The rest of the cast reappears regularly — Laurie as a series of half-witted bluebloods, Richardson as drippy young women, Fry as cunning advisors and hearty generals, and McInnery as airbrained idiots and prissy assistants.

Aside from being polished up in the remastering process, apparently this edition is going to have deleted scenes, audio commentaries (YAY!) and interviews. It’s probably not worth the shell-out if you already enjoy the whole thing, but definitely is if you don’t.

The complete series of “Unlit Adder” is a humorous cornucopia — it starts off a bit weakly, but once it gets its footing, it’s absolute hilarious. A must-have.

I feel like I have been waiting a long time to gawk this movie and that the trailer for “Hero” (“Ying xiong”) has been teasing us for at least a year. I have to admit that I fully expected to contemplate an fable rotund of battle scenes and massed armies of men. My mistake. This film from China is a pointed yarn, distilled from yarn that may well be narrative, and with a point that may well be lost on Western audiences. This is determined from those viewers who are unwilling to pick up the conventions of wire work in Chinese martial art pictures and whose standard of realism refuses to allow for the poetic ballet of combat.

The prologue makes it obvious that this narrative takes status in China before it was China, when the land was made up of seven warring provinces and the King of Qin (Chen Dao Ming) dreamt of conquering the other six provinces and uniting the land. For years the king has been unable to have a serene night of sleep because there are three assassins who are out to extinguish him. Now comes a nameless warrior (Jet Li), who has approach to the imperial court to be rewarded for killing the three unbeatable assassins. He is warned that he may not reach within 100 paces of the king or he will be killed. But because he has bested the assassin Sky (Donnie Yen) in combat, he is allowed with 20 paces to roar his memoir.

Most of the record of “Hero” is told in flashback as Nameless tells his stories and the king questions him. We also learn of the fates of Broken Sword (Tony Leung) and Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung), two assassins who were also a pair of lovers. But there is more than one truth and more than one anecdote to be told in this film. Director Zhang Yimou, improving on the artistry we first enjoyed in “Raise the Red Lantern,” color codes the stories that we notice. First the anecdote is told in lush shades of red, then in cold blue, again in white, and finally in green. Drops of water and swirling yellow leaves all become parts of the dances of death during the fight sequences, captured by cinematographer Christopher Doyle. “Hero” is a graceful film that uses its saturated colors better than any film of unusual memory. There is a code to the colors, but that is something you need to reach to terms with on your fill.

Another strength of this film is that the fighting (choreographed by Wei Tung) and special effects do not overwhelm the actors who are required to play what is on some level the same scene as slightly different characters. I know there are computer generated effects in this film, especially since there are more arrows shot in “Hero” than any film in history, but for once I did not accumulate the feel that what I was seeing was not staunch. That is become this film keeps coming serve to questions of aesthetics, from the breathtaking expend of color to the eloquent concept that swordsmanship and calligraphy are intrinsically awaited.

Special mention has to be made of the music, collected by Dun Tan and featuring violin solos and fiddling by Itzhak Perlman along with drumming by the Japanese group Kodo. I have never really seen one of those Hong Kong kung fu movies where everyone screams while they fight and I might never procure around to it given the soundless eloquence of the fights in movies like “Hero” (not to mention “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), where the moments are underscored by the sound of clashing swords, pounding drums, and a violin. “Hero” is an art film, albeit one made on a larger and more sparkling canvas.

“Hero” may be sold as being a tall film but it is really about something relatively tedious and simple. I disagree with the thought that either the style or substance of the film is beyond our Western sensibilities. Apparently the reason the film has the “Quentin Tarantino Presents” price at the initiate was so that Miramax would not reduce 20 minutes of the film out on the pretext that it too Asian/confusing for Western audiences. Indeed, I have seen some critics who professes to be confused about the complex place and I can only wonder if they were equally confused by “Rashomon,” an definite reference point to this one (in many ways Yimou owes more to Akira Kurosawa’s classic film than to Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) . Certainly after a century of cinema we are excellent to looking at the same thing from multiple perspectives and enjoying this gem of a film that has finally made its diagram to our shores.

Much as Ang Lee demonstrated his directorial virtuosity in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, Zhang Yimou has applied his aesthetic talents to the martial arts genre with HERO. This is movie not only worth seeing, but worth watching two or three times, or more. Each viewing unveils modern appreciation for Zhang’s artistic direction, Chris Doyle’s cinematography, Tan Dun’s musical get, and Itzhak Perlman’s violin performance, not to mention unique insights into the chronicle line and character interrelationships.

The tale line is simple enough on its surface, based loosely on Chinese historical fact. The king of the Qin situation seeks to unify the Seven Kingdoms some 2,000 years ago, and three assassins from the defeated Zhao region wish to waste him. An unknown warrior named Nameless, from the Qin set, succeeds in killing the three assassins and returns to acquire his reward in an audience with the King. As we plan segments of Nameless’s explanation of how he defeated three such fearsome opponents, a battle of wits ensues with the skeptical King until the truth emerges. Their verbal sparring beautifully parallels the feints, thrusts, and parries of the martial arts scenes.

Within this account line, we are treated to unbelievable, ballet-like martial arts contests between Nameless and the three assassins. Each scene is dominated by one distinguished color, from the opening desert white to the reds of the calligraphy school to the yellows of autumn leaves whose wind-swept swirls become weapons in themselves. A sword fight between Broken Sword and the King of Qin is cloaked in flowing green cloth, reminiscent of Zhang’s expend of colored cloth in JU DOU.

While HERO evokes memories of RASHOMON, this is not the same motif. The three “versions” of the assassins’ reported deaths are rather more like the leisurely unfolding of a Sherlock Holmes mystery. As the memoir reveals itself, the relationship of the four assassins (including Nameless) moves from enemies to spurned lovers to companions working together and finally to a genuinely tragic (if seemingly platonic) adore between two of them.

Several less recognized aspects of HERO are particularly gracious of impress. First, anyone who saw Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung in IN THE MOOD FOR Treasure will gather it worthy that the same two actors could pull off the characters of Broken Sword and Flying Snow so successfully. Second, the game of Go played by the assassin Sky at the beginning of the movie magnificently foreshadows Nameless’s successive movements in the King’s presence from 100 to 20 to 10 paces. Third, the ballet movements in unison of the candle flames burning before the King are not only sparkling in notion, they mirror the closing scene’s behavior of the King’s faceless advisors calling for Nameless’s execution. Finally, the juxtaposition of calligraphy brushes with swords and flying arrows is a dramatic visual rendition of the pen and sword adage.

A last comment. Criticism of HERO as Communist Party propaganda is laughably absurd and demonstrates a severe lack of thought of Chinese history. Qin Shihuang was a product of his times, no more or less tyrannical than the Egyptian pharaohs, Alexander the Tremendous, Julius Caesar, William the Conqueror, Suleiman, or the American generals who “cleared” the Wild West of Indians. Regardless of his methods, Qin Shihuang accomplished a astronomical unification (All under heaven) that continues two millennia after his death. HERO evokes the founding of a nation and one unknown man’s ultimate decision to sublimate his desire for revenge to the greater honorable of his country. That makes it no more propagandist than stories of Abraham Lincoln’s struggle to re-unify the North and the South at the cost of countless thousands of lives, and far less pathetically propagandist than the new “American hero” movies celebrating Jessica Lynch or Ronald Reagan. Americans need to purchase a long, hard glimpse in the mirror more often before screaming propaganda about the cultural work of other countries.

HERO is not a perfect movie. The sword fight over the lake goes a bit over the top, the calligraphy/sword connection is overplayed, and Zhang Ziyi’s character Moon too often feels extraneous. Nevertheless, HERO is a Must Glimpse for anyone who loves gargantuan story-telling and mountainous movie-making.

An unshaven and weather-beaten young man sits brooding over a cup of coffee in an anonymous roadside café. A man of means by no means, as Roger Miller would do it. But Al Roberts (Tom Neal) is king of no road, and by the destroy of DETOUR we wonder whether he is even sovereign over his acquire soul.

A potential dawdle in the effect of a beneficial trucker strikes up a conversation. Where you coming from? West. Where you going to? East.

Roberts is substandard, though. He’s coming from Hell and he’s going to Nowhere, and the last thing he needs is a chatty trucker along for company.

DETOUR is told in a flashback from that lonely stool. Roberts and his girlfriend work as pianist/singer in a fleabag club out east. Comes a foggy night and she splits up with him to pursue fame out west. Weeks later he calls and they agree to gather support together. He’ll advance out west and they can be married.

Being down at his heels Roberts is forced to hitchhike to California. All goes well until he reaches Arizona, where Fate deals Roberts one execrable hand after another. In short order the innocent Roberts finds and feels himself a hunted man.

DETOUR is a fantastic film. Neal is perfect as the short-tempered young musician who finds himself trapped first by and accident and later by femme fatale Ann Savage, who know his abominable secret and has no scruples against using it against him for her acquire foul purposes. Mature B-movie director Edgar Ulmer has enough tricks up his sleeves to surmount the Poverty Row studio conditions he was working under. If you’re a fan of film noir, or relish hard-bitten stories, you’ll bask in DETOUR.

By the contrivance, my thirty year veteran first edition copy of The Film Encyclopedia had an moving entry on DETOUR’S star Tom Neal. He received a law degree from Harvard University in 1938. Throughout the forties he appeared in a number of B-movies, usually cast as a tough guy. In 1951 he found himself in the middle of a admire triangle intriguing Franchot Tone and Barbara Payton. Neal “smashed” Tone’s nose and a scandal ensued. Neal became poison and no studio would utilize him, so he became a gardener and later established a landscaping business. In 1965 he was accused of murdering his wife. Able to demonstrate that the gun went off accidentally, Neal had the charges reduced to manslaughter and served a six-year sentence. He died in 1971.

‘Detour’ manages to do in 67 min. what most films dream about in two hours. Made for almost nothing in 5 days by a small-time studio, this goes to expose that you don’t need money or tall studio benefit to execute an enduring movie. You can sense the tight budget all around. Buy into consideration for example that Ulmer shot a huge piece of the film inside cars (peer how the first few cars have the driver’s seat on the left side, like English automobiles), a cheap nightclub and a creaky apartment. Also in the flashback sequence when Tom Neal is sitting in the restaurant, Ulmer simply build out the lights, made a close-up on Neal’s face and shed a rectangular light onto his eyes to build the flashback carry out. All this techniques, while not very innovative, add to the do of this bleak limited gem. A unlit slight drama that is deserving of it’s cult following. Tom Neal is the ultimate conceal chump as an innocent man who happens to land on Ann Savage’s deadly lap. Ann Savage creates one of the most ruthless characters ever to grace the silver cover, her character doesn’t have a shred of human kindness or decency, she’s tough, greedy, ruthless and relentless. It has all the elements of sizable noir; a truly memorable femme fatale, shadowy foggy streets, acid-stingy dialogue and a hero who gets his impartial desserts. A dismal shrimp gem that deserves to be discovered by noir fans. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film an 8!

Anyone who has seen AMISTAD or ROOTS needs to inspect the Michael Apted directed Fantastic GRACE which predates and fills in so distinguished of the political and humanistic tug of war that existed concerning the poor dirty business of the African Slave Trade.Hollywood could not have conjectured a more moral film than the precise suitable and attractive life of William Wilberforce,a revered mettlesome figure in England, who, with the support of other abolitionists and political sympathizers, takes on the English Parliament and wins legislation to finally extinguish the Slave Trade in 1807.This movie is SO indispensable because it is this share of history that leads other European nations to follow suit in subsequent years and eventually to kill the trade worldwide.Michael Apted has skillfully rescued this tale from being another biopic, and has turned it into a sweeping fable that rings historically honest.

No finer actor could have been chosen to play Wilberforce than the Emmy Award winning Welsh marvel Ioan Gruffudd, pronounced YO-an Griffith( HORATIO HORNBLOWER,SOLOMON AND GAENOR,VERY ANNIE MARY) .Gruffudd positively understands the heart and soul of Wilberforce, and delivers a tender yet dynamic knockout performance of this absolutely giant among men whose inner convictions and great and persuasive rhetoric eventually accumulate over Parliament in a nearly twenty year life-and-death struggle.

This film brings tremendously moral and historical notion of the political machine that was (and frankly serene is) in spot from 1785 to 1807.Historical figures argue and debate their opposing views while the lives of millions of innocent Africans and the fortunes and supremacies of national pride hang in the balance. The film moves like a flash and is not preachy or at all heavyhanded in any direction. It simply tells and impartial and riveting true-to-life legend. Some characters and events are combined together to compact the screenplay, but no truth is lost in the outcome.

The film takes it’s name from the celebrated 18th-century eminent hymn Fantastic GRACE,written by the Anglican minister John Newton, who had, years earlier, himself been an active and ardent participant in the selling of African flesh.John Newton is portrayed (a bit powerful like a crazy customary celibate monk) by worn actor Albert Finney in one of the smaller supporting supporting roles.Though noteworthy of what Newton says in the film is directly from his bear memoirs,he was a married man, who, historically, valued his wife as his best friend. Now in his declining years,Newton, who has in later years been Rector of a London Church,is sought out by Wilberforce, who sat under Newton’s pulpit as a child,to have the obsolete minister abet him in the cause of exposing the Slave Trade in all of it’s ugliness. As was lawful in Newton’s actual life,Finney shows that this is the singlemost painful event in Newton’s life thus making it next to impossible to discuss. The film directs Newton and Wilberforce over the course of the twenty years in order for the terrible truth to advance forth.Proof was significant to persuade Parliament, and Newton was a key fraction to passing the abolitionist legislation.

Up and coming actor Benedict Cumberbatch accurately conveys William Pitt The Younger,in his boyhood friendship with Wilberforce and his subsequent rise to Prime Minister of England. What is bewitching about their relationship is that all of their political idealism comes to fruition showing the power and perseverance that these two young men had in fighting an age worn institution that threatened to destabilize all of England.Other historical figures in this film such as Lord Tarlton (the ever incredible Ciaran Hinds) and Equiano (Youssou N’dour),Toby Jones as Lord Clarence (this actor seems to be able to play EVERYTHING!!!) and actors Michael Gambon as Sir Charles Fox do the utmost to bring this film to the heart and consciences of the world today.

This film is simply NOT objective another period section drama or an “inspirational” film;rather it is an artfully scripted, deftly acted and directed and compelling portion of historical drama that all will support from viewing.Again,5 *****’s is not sufficient.May there be more films of such quality and substance made like this!

Excellent companion films would be A Well-behaved TRADE,THE MIDDLE PASSAGE,AMISTAD,THE VOYAGE OF LA AMISTAD, MANSFIELD PARK (1999) and somewhat ROOTS.

“Fabulous Grace” is an exceptional film that chronicles the astonishing accurate account of William Wilberforce, the man who spent twenty years in the British Parliament fighting to destroy one of mankind’s greatest injustices: the slave trade. The film features considerable performances by an outstanding cast, including Ioan Gruffudd (“Astounding Four,” “King Arthur,” TV’s “Horatio Hornblower”) as Wilberforce, whose faith and courage drove his fight for social justice. Albert Finney gives an improbable performance as John Newton, the faded slave-ship captain turned pastor, and writer of the beloved hymn “Extraordinary Grace.” Michael Gambon, Romola Garai, Youssou N’Dour, Rufus Sewell, and Nicholas Farrell give outstanding supporting performances.

The rest of the crew does a fabulous job of bringing the world of 18th/19th Century Britain to life. “Astonishing Grace” is an improbable film that shows how men of faith can truly benefit change the world. Improbable Grace, indeed!
