For The Love of the Game
Kevin Costner gives a very compelling performance as a baseball player at the end of his career. He is very realistic in the role and brings thought provoking issues to light. How do you decide to hang up your glove and leave a game that has been the most important thing in your life? It was great that he could personally do the pitching in this movie because it would have lost a lot of the realism and credibility if they had to use someone else.
Not a baseball fan
I am not a baseball fan but i can tell you this movie is really good it is really deep full of emotion. I don’t know anything about the game basball i live in England but yet i was able to really enjoy it bcoz it doesn’t really focus on the game but on the personal life of a successful baseball player. Brilliant buy it.
Excellent Baseball Story
This is an excellent baseball movie and a decent romantic entry as well. Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is a veteran pitcher with an accomplished career who is headed for the Hall of Fame. On the day we meet him he has a lot on his mind. He is informed that his team is being sold, he is being traded and the love of his life is moving to England. Add to this the pain in his pitching arm, his impending decision on whether to retire and the fact that winning this game is critical in determining if the Yankees go to the playoffs, and you have a man with overloaded neurons.
The story unfolds as an introspective retrospective. As he is pitching this important game, he is thinking about his childhood, his relationship with Jane (Kelly Preston) and how he is going to get the next batter out. He is so preoccupied that it doesn’t even dawn on him until the eighth inning that there have been no Yankee hits and he has been pitching a perfect game.
The flashback elements are expertly woven into the game, giving us a genuine feeling for his distraction. This is a fresh perspective for a sports movie. Instead of simply focusing on what the player is doing, the film focuses on what he is thinking while he is doing it. It gives us an authentic look at how athletes get “in the zone”, filtering out all the noise and concentrating totally on their performance. Those who have been involved in athletic competition can identify with this state, although only the best can achieve it at will.
Sam Raimi’s direction on this film was excellent. His direction of the love story was nothing special, but he did a superb job on the baseball scenes. The combination of on the field action, commentary by Vin Scully and simulated TV telecast footage was so well done that it was impossible to differentiate it from a major league game in progress.
The acting ranged from fair to excellent. Kelly Preston was very good as Jane. She brought a full range of emotional expression to the part, though she sometimes got a little shrill, like the scene in the hospital where she screams out “Is this America? Is baseball still the national pastime.” Overall though, she played the part of the torn lover very well.
Kevin Costner is no great lead actor and it is hard to understand why he is so popular. Perhaps it is his whiny lost boy charm that makes women want to mother him. In the love story, he again presented as listless and uninspired. But in the baseball scenes, he came alive. In fact, in these scenes Costner was not acting so much as acting out. He loves baseball and was obsessed with doing all his own baseball scenes. He is a top notch athlete, so he really could throw a curveball and his fastball had plenty of pop. His ability to portray a professional athlete in this instance was superlative, probably due to his having played the game scholastically. So overall, I would have to rate his performance here as very good.
John Reilly gets a very honorable mention as Chapel’s catcher. He was quietly supportive and unobtrusive, the way catchers usually are. He portrayed intense desire in a demure and low key way without overacting. It was a nice performance by an actor in a supporting role playing a baseball player in a supporting role.
I love baseball and this was a great baseball movie so I rated it 8/10. Anyone who enjoys sports will probably enjoy this film.

American anime fans who were not familiar with the comics printed in English more than a decade ago have probably spent the past 10+ years wondering what the fuss was about. (Well it certainly wasn’t trying to interpret the spelling and pronunciation of the title to people!) I’m distinct there are as many answers to this mystery as there are fans, but the series would never have captured such a broad international following if it weren’t for the clownish personality found in the invading “space-demon” Lum. Worthy of the conflict in the anecdote (especially this early on) seems to spring from her selfishness and her amoral world belief. Here’s a girl that puts the “I” attend into ideology! If you can dig that kind of protagonist well then, there is another hero in the record to benefit you in those moments when you unbiased can’t engage Lum’s side; high school underclassman Ataru. As the unwilling object of Lum’s desire he counter acts her histrionic antics with indignation and a laughable inability to view the error of his bear selfish machinations. And let’s not forget Ataru’s girlfriend Shinobu; You search for Lum doesn’t like Shinobu, not that it would matter if she did.
Those of you wondering how this television series differs from the fresh manga will accept that the character designs in these early episodes are simpler and less divergent from what was Rumiko Takahashi’s emerging style as an illustrator. You will also bag the key events from the manga series’ initial installments intact; but you will be treated to some new detours, most notably a farcical time go storyline.
In order to introduce the series properly the first episode includes the depraved game of “note” that American reviewers in the 1980s mischievously traditional to report the series as a being raunchy comedy. Cramped did they know that it would soon be translated and people would learn that nothing (well maybe not nothing) could be further from the truth. In fact, hard core Urusei Yatsura fans direct that the series has only one innuendo-laced scene(and guess what, it’s on this disc) .

Another key aspect of this volume is the introduction of two supporting characters. After all, it is in this stage of the sage that we peek the conflict between Shinobu and Lum erupt for the first time. From here on out it takes the do of an anticlimactic running gag. We also win to peep Sakura, the school nurse introduced for the first time.
I disapprove to sign a high school do to this thing, but I might as well retain with the theme. So in conclu . . . er, uhm, . . .I mean in other words, Urusei Yatsura’s transition into a television series is a Takahashi franchise that lives up the recent material.
Well, what to say about this. I can imagine a lot of people will judge this fair some other passe stuff and disregard it and it IS quaint to be just.
I bought this at a whim and I was rather troubled after seeing the first few seconds of the intro. What was this old-looking and rather below-average animation, which wasn’t that well transferred to DVD either doing here. Why did I pick this!?

Well, luckily I did plan the rest and boy was I surprised. For a 20+ year former demonstrate this is top stuff. So what is so obliging? The animation is used looking but VERY marvelous for those times for a TV series. Very fluid and consistent. The command acting is respectable and they really bring the characters alive. And of course the episodes themselves are hilarious.
I was crooked rapidly 
. Of course there are awful things too. Not all episodes are first-rate, some are merely average or honorable and a few are objective expressionless poor (impartial a few in my eyes so far and I’ve seen the first 15 DVDs so far) .
The DVD quality is average usually, sometimes dreadful with bleeding, shining and after-images. I don’t know if this is due to my player but I don’t judge so because I have a ton of other dvds that play impartial radiant.
Sound is decent, after all it IS 20 years traditional Mono quality.
Biggest downside: NO extras, NO english dub, NO anything.

You salvage honest the japanese version with english subtitles, that’s it, excepting a morse code subtitle on the first dvd and some commercials on nr 6 or 7 I believe.
Well that’s glorious with me of course, because I steal japanese with subtitles, but some might not.
Anyway, if you like Ranma or series like Ranma (comedy with action) you should try hiring this dvd or one of the others and maybe, like me, you’ll like it.

It is said that the role of Peter Venkman was originally written for John Belushi, but we’ll never know how he would have performed in the role. Fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Murray stepped into the role and ran away with the movie. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd fit into the anecdote like a glove in Ivan Reitman’s masterpiece, but Bill Murray steals his every scene – which means most of the movie – with a performance pudgy of dead-pan, ironic, world-weary, been-there-done-that hilariousness.
He has a sarcastic allege for every occasion, and the audience is the only one in on the joke every time.
When prospective girlfriend Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver, who gets a plum opportunity to exhibit off her comedic skills) gets possessed by an substandard demon, she is transformed into a slinky seductress. Bill Murray has approach over to her apartment and in his hilarious dead-pan manner lets the audience know that he recognizes all is not normal with Ms. Barrett. As hilarious and sarcastic as Venkman is, he’s at least a gentleman of sorts and doesn’t hold advantage of the position when the demon tries to seduce him.

The special effects don’t study like the CGI visions that have been on conceal for a couple of years (this was 1984) yet they’re piece of the fun. Even so, the special effects abet the sage rather than up-staging it, and when the movie was initially released I remember howling with the audience after the first special-effect ghost “attacks” Bill Murray and leaves him on the floor in a glistening mess.
“He SLIMED me!” Venkman yelled, and we laughed our heads off.

This disc is not dated by contemporary references – it’s impartial as hilarious today as it was in 1984, and it’ll probably be impartial as droll 100 years from now. The DVD comes with extras that add to the fun, and in the commentary tracks Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis present that “Ghostbusters” was an absolute highlight in all of their lives.

I have grown up with “Ghostbusters”, and was a fan of the cartoon series, the toys, and of course, the movies. I calm am, and unfortunately, I wasn’t all that delighted with Criterion’s laserdisc release of the film. The portray contained a lot of noise, and the matte lines were so visible, that even director Ivan Reitman was upset about it. That’s not the case here. With the release of “Ghostbusters” on DVD, digitally remastered and crammed to the gills with extras, including a live video commentary with Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis that looks great like “Mystery Science Theater 3000″, this makes the purpose of the invention of a DVD player positive! This DVD is righteous! It has everything I hoped for! They(Columbia/Tristar) really outdid themselves with this DVD. It includes numerous documentaries(instead of the usual 1 or 2), production photos, sketch artist drawings, and deleted scenes. Commenting on the deleted scenes, one of them was very exclusive, in which Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray play street bums instead of Venkman and Stantz, with Bill Murray doing his “Caddyshack” riff. It’s astounding that the cameras rolled for it, but it’s there. The only thing missing was the inclusion of a scene that found it’s procedure into the Criterion laserdisc, which followed the three ghostbusters leaving the college and Venkman commenting on how “he’s gonna gather the nobel prize”. Smooth, it also becomes intuitively definite why those scenes were sever once you view them. Anyway, if you have a DVD player and do not have this DVD, you are really missing out. It’s hard to contemplate why anyone would not want to add the “Ghostbusters” DVD to their collection. If you don’t like it, your as unimaginative as those ghosts running around.

Ok, every now and then we search for a movie so outrageously funny, so sleazy, chunky of exploitive scenes and so trashy that you wonder as to why you would extinguish your time watching it and how you managed to sit through the whole thing. I saw “The Girls REBEL FORCE of Competitive Swimmers” (aka. Joshikyoei hanrangun, Attack Girls’ Swim Team vs. The Undead) earlier this year, and honestly, I feel so guilty that I managed to sit through the film. Well, I have a weakness for zombies and I have to indicate that I am no snob. Hey, The film does feature hot Japanese girls in swimsuits and they’re often seen in their birthday suits.

Aki (Sasa Handa) is a student with a frightened past. She was kept prisoner and abused by an enigmatic professor and trained to be an assassin. She had unbiased transferred to a school at the worst possible time. There’s a mysterious virus in the school and students and teachers are being rounded up to receive a vaccine to counter the virus. However, the very same vaccine supposed to protect them from infection is actually a drug that turns everyone to flesh-eating zombies. Luckily, Aki skipped on the vaccine, and the swim team is immune to the virus because of the chemicals indicate in the school’s swimming pool–chlorine. Aki finds out that the man responsible for the injections is the same man who sexually abused and kept her prisoner.
I was expecting a film worthy like “Wild Zero”, “Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis”, and “Meatball Machine” when I assign the DVD in the player. The film is graceful poor, but I have to admit I couldn’t serve snickering and giggling while I was watching it. The film is somewhat lively in a “guilty” type of plot (or maybe I have dreadful taste? ) . The film really seemed like director Koji Kawano and the rest of the film crew were writing the film as they went along and drinking a lot of sake while shooting it. The fight scenes are funny, the “special effects” are a far scream from being “special”, the area is so amusing and it is so unimaginative that the script doesn’t build sense at all.

So why the heck did I raze my time watching it??
The film does obtain some originality when it comes to sheer campiness. A swim team that takes on zombies obvious is current. The girls aren’t as hot as those in “OneChanbara” but they are quite sexy in their gain procedure. It’s a wonder that they had to change to swimsuits before they go into battle. There’s an abundance of female nudity and softcore sex scenes–there’s even girl-on-girl action. There is blood and gore when a teacher uses a ruler to slit off limbs and heads. There is a zombie lunch buffet. I will mutter you the film’s most wicked scene: a laser beam is shot from the lead actress’s crotch region!! The actresses knew what exactly they signed up for in this film–count on the Japanese to build a film that counts on pure exploitation, panty shots, sex scenes and a lot of female nudity to do audiences in the seats.
The film does not obtain any bit of sense and to be unprejudiced, I feel quite hypocritical if I said I didn’t be pleased trashy films–but I really don’t. But how reach I know this film is indeed unpleasant but never for a moment did I feel bored in its entirety? The film’s sex scenes are unarrousing but I have a hard time telling the disagreement between erotic and dull–because the film doesn`t create any sense. The rape scene feels forced and the acting is really abominable. I have to say that the low-budget blood and gore is engaging. Plus, nothing is as sinister as a “crotch laser beam”. “Attack Girls` Swim Team vs. the Undead” is DEFINITELY NOT for everyone. If any of my descriptions sound entertaining to you, then go ahead and give the movie a spin–just don’t say I didn’t warn you. The film is a hoot!
Rent it! But recommended to fans of Japanese trashy exploitation and wacky films. [2 ½ Stars]

Okay, let’s commence off by saying that if you’re the kind of person who sees a title like Attack Girls Swim Team vs. the Undead and does not immediately assume “THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER”, you’re probably in the unfriendly position. Because that’s exactly what I concept when I saw the title of this movie, and, well, I’m the guy who’s writing the review. If we’re coming from entirely different mindsets… you know. And while the movie doesn’t live up to the promise of the title, it’s certainly favorable for a romp.
Aki (Sasa Handa) is the original girl at school. Keeps to herself, level-headed, that sort of thing. One day, Sayaka (Yuria Hidaka), seeing her at the side of the pool and mistaking her for someone else, pushes her in as a prank. The two of them become hastily friends after that, but this is no simple friendship drama. Because, after all, there must be an putrid mastermind experimenting on the school (where else but in Japan? ), administering a “vaccine” for a cool that’s going around. But, yeah, vaccine? It makes zombies of everyone but Aki and the girls’ swim team, who must derive a cure.
No, it’s not a enormous movie, and most of the time it’s not even a well-behaved movie. But on the Joe Bob Briggs blood, breasts, and beasts scale, it gets top marks in all three categories (including one scene between Handa and Hidaka that wouldn’t be out of site in an Emmanuelle flick), and it adds a continual element of fair concept outlandish, in that style the Japanese do so well. The climax of the movie is honest jaw-dropping. I mean, really, off-the-scale, [censored for Amazon consumption] nuts. And hysterically laughable, if that kind of humor works for you.
So, yeah, not a superior movie, but it’s the kind of abominable movie that transcends its badness and becomes something colossal. This is one you owe it to yourself to spy. ****

I saw this film at a Toronto Int’l Film Festival industry screening and notion it was one of best documentaries I have EVER seen! I’ve read a couple of reviews that have called it the definitive film of the subject of abortion – I completely agree. I’ve never seen anything so complex, complete and emotionally wrenching as this record work. It stayed with me long after the screening. In fact, it’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen LAKE OF FIRE and it continues to haunt my thoughts. I weeped at the slay. My only criticisms are it’s length (far too long) and it’s spend of music, which often bordered on excessive and manipulative. But, those are relatively dinky concerns when weighed against the film’s many positives.

I Worship documentaries and have seen nearly every major work produced in the past 20 to 30 years (as well as not so major films) . “Lake of Fire” may well be my approved – I’m tranquil deciding if any of the other films I’ve loved delivered the same unrelenting, yet profoundly emotional punch to the gut that this one did. This is the best film no one has ever seen! What a pity!!!!
“Lake of Fire” is an in-depth examine at the Abortion direct. No matter which side you happen to belong, Tony Kaye gives both sides equal time. There are interviews of people off the street, as well as comments from Writers, Attorneys, Doctors, and Patients on the subject. There is no memoir, and Tony Kaye was wise to let these people notify for themselves.
There were many issues raised within the subject of Abortion, on both sides, that effect one go HMMMMMM. There IS graphic footage contained in this film, so wait until the kids have gone to bed, to pop this film in the DVD player.

The most surprising thing is that the woman who is at the heart of the landmark Roe V Wade decision, is now in total opposition to the Law she was instrumental in creating. The subject of Abortion clinic bombings and the assassinations of physicians who work in Abortion clinics is not only touched upon, but the blurring of the Law vs. Morality argument is a case in point of how divided we are, when the just to life explain is raised. We gawk in the film, tapes of the bombers/shooters making their case to the police while in custody. I may be a bit biased, but the Pro-Lifers looked a cramped crazy to me. It’s hard to search for someone’s point of notion when Religion makes it’s plan into a conversation about this subject.
Whether you are Pro-Life, or Pro-Choice, this film is an education in what defines us as human beings. Does life inaugurate at birth, or the Zygote stage of developement? How do we determine the notify? I don’t have it really can be. I bear in the accurate to determine, to have control over one’s body, financial security and education. There are many women today, who would have been marginalized, and possibly welfare mothers, were it not for Roe V Wade.
Women, as well as Men, owe it to themselves to search for this film. There is no better film out there, that is this comprehensive. You will be changed after seeing it.
